Poppy Poster Winners Named On Thursday
Helen Thomas won first prize in the American Legion Auxiliary poppy poster contest with twenty one sixth to eighth grade entries. Beverly Nienhaus took second prize. Judges were Mrs Walter Beisner Mrs Russell Meyers and Miss Veryl Sturch. Posters display the poppy theme as tribute to the dead and will be shown in local business windows on poppy day May 27 at Sorgs Drug Store.

County Trunk Road Program Outlined By Board
The county board of supervisors in session at Waverly laid out this year s trunk road program with county engineer W S Chapman. It calls for graveling nine and a half miles and new construction on six miles after approval from the state highway commission. Graveling covers routes north and east of highway 93 from Leroy toward the Chickasaw county line and trunk road M from E to Maxfield township. New grading and bridging include three miles on trunk roads A and B from Spring Lake to trunk road B in Lafayette township and three miles on trunk road M near Maxfield and Franklin townships. The local road program approved by the highway commission includes 24 and a half miles of grading and 26 and a half miles of graveling.

Marcus Dettmer Fractures Arm In Bicycle Fall
Marcus Dettmer a 14 year old of Mr and Mrs Fred Dettmer north of Tripoli suffered a fracture to the left arm between elbow and wrist when a bicycle fall threw him from the bike while riding to get the mail. He was brought to Tripoli where a local physician set the arm.

Falls From Swing Leaves Boy In Critical Condition
Little Billy Mahan seven at Lincoln school is in Mercy hospital with a skull fracture after a swing incident last Friday. He flew about sixteen feet, struck a tree, then fell face down on the walk. Lloyd McDowell found him and rushed him to hospital where doctors fight to save him. he remains unconscious with brief moments of recognition.

High School Liquor Case Nets Parole After Guilty Plea
Herman Hay was arrested on two counts possession and sale of intoxicating liquor. A bottle found in Wendell Anhalt’s school locker triggered testimony that Morrill bought the bottle for Hay and handed it to Anhalt. Anhalt admitted giving Morrill the bottle. Morrill faced Judge M H Kepler, pleaded guilty, received a $300 fine and three months in jail, but was paroled on good behavior due to family circumstances.

German-born Henry Mahnke 83 dies at home
Henry L. Mahnke 83 died at his home Monday May 22 from old age and complications. Born in Germany July 4 1850 he came to the United States in 1872 and married Lauretta Weiss on November 19 1873. He worked forty one years in the lumber and coal business. Survived by widow six sons Henry Davenport Herman Walter Albert Greene Chris Werner 15 grandchildren two great grandchildren. Funeral at St Pauls Lutheran with Rev Schlueter and burial at Harlington Cemetery.

Storm Damage Hits City and Surroundings
A Friday evening storm caused extensive damage in and around the city. Trees were uprooted and a portion of the Illinois Central freight depot collapsed. At the Albrecht farm south of town roof damage occurred to the house on No 218. A Broadie Drug Store plate glass window was blown inward and several windows shattered by hail.
