Farmers Prospects in Stateside Markets and Livestock Trends

Iowa farmers face a rosy year if corn crops store well and demand stays strong. Francis Kutish of Iowa State College notes defense spending and consumer demand lift profits in many foods, but cattle producers risk tighter margins as beef prices wobble. Slaughter rises push cattle and hogs toward normal price relationships, with cautious expansion advised. Dairy profits may improve due to population growth and lower production while lamb and wool outlook remains modest amid slower sheep growth.

Prospects improve as building, defense spending, and auto material supplies rise, and hog prices climb. a good crop could lift Iowa business, but a repeat of 1950s price spikes seems unlikely unless the international situation worsens.
