Arthur Brisbane ponders the dock exchange law to aid worried bankers facing liquidity fears while debating margins, margins, and the ethics of lending. He notes heat and drought hurting wheat in Nebraska and risks of delaying rains, then shifts to Prohibition drink patterns, war debts, and potential U S policy toward Germany with Roosevelt and Hitler. A pretty Crane Creek Lutheran church ceremony on Tuesday May 8 joined Miss Lucinda Dohrmann and Mr. Alfred Boeckmann in marriage. Rev. Dilges officiated as Lohengrin’s march sounded. The bride wore white satin with orange blossom veil, pink carnation bouquet. bridesmaid wore pink taffeta. Leota Dohrmann as flower girl. Guests totaled about 41 at the Dohrmann home afterward. the couple will farm in Douglas township.
The Leader asks readers to check the date opposite their name on the printed label and report any mis credit. Many renewals have occurred but some remain in arrears and need payment. The paper requests readers to call and advance subscriptions, noting a need for funds.
Glen Miller, Iowa state president of the Farmers Union, will speak at a Bremer county meeting in Bretmann hall Denver Friday evening May 18. Ray Shield announces the open meeting where Miller will answer questions from attendees.
The Frederika commencement will be held Thursday evening May 17 at the school with a five member senior class: Hilda Bremer Dorothy Heideman Everett Bremer Robert Carney and Segebarth. Programs include processional overture sing along high school days and diploma presentations. School closes May 19 with a community picnic in the school park. Senior class attended class day May 14 at Upper Iowa University.
W. C. Hoth, county treasurer, urges all residents with delinquent personal property or head taxes for 1933 34 to pay at the treasurer’s office to avoid penalties. Dog tag purchasers lacking 1934 tags will appear delinquent. The Old Age Pension tax due at age 21 and up will be delinquent after July 1. Due to heavy office work, notices cannot be mailed.
The Bremer County Tax Payers League will meet in the Court House at Waverly on Monday afternoon May 21 at 1:80 o'clock. All candidates for office are invited to discuss public questions. E. H. Homan, secretary executive committee.
The 1934 class sermon will be delivered at St. Peter's Evangelical church Sunday evening at 8 o'clock by Pastor Rev. Theo. A. Thomas. The graduating class comprises 18 members. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Bockhaus and their son Walter visited the Alfred Rohrssen home near Sumner Sunday afternoon.
A pre season benefit concert by the Sumner and Tripoli bands, directed by Mirick, will be at the Tripoli opera house Friday May 18 at 8 15 pm. The program includes band and orchestra works with Byers' dance orchestra performing popular numbers to raise funds for new music. Tickets 5 and 10 cents available from band members or Sorg Drug Store.
Weather aids Rebholz and Drape as crews push high school project after weeks of start. Concrete walls and abutments poured with no delays while ground work finished. Skeleton steel framework rising with massive girders, boiler work begun, coal bin floor and cover in place, materials on hand and no interruption in pace.
Posters created by sixth to eighth graders in a poppy contest will be shown in local business windows from May 19 to May 30. The display aims to spread the poppy message and practical knowledge to the public. Mr and Mrs Otto Westendorf and family visited Grove Hill on Sunday.
Jesse Johnson drove a Hudson through Sumner district causing damage to two cars and a bank front. He crashed into the Diamond Store after removing a bumper and injuring no one. He and three companions, with home brew bottles, were arrested and jailed.
The Bremer Creamery Co ice house burned to the ground Saturday morning. The wooden structure, built 12 years ago to replace an earlier fire-damaged building, was possibly ignited by a spark from the smokestack onto dry sawdust. Fire risk to adjacent structures prompted crews to knock down a nearby garage to prevent spread.
Relatives gathered Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Eichmann to honor Mr. Eichmann on his Saturday birthday and sister Mrs. Bertha Lewis on her Sunday birthday. Guests included Mrs. Bertha Lewis of Coggan, Mr. and Mrs. Creslie Lewis and daughter of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Goodenbour, and Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Fiecmann and children, with dinner preparations brought by the ladies.
The Board of Supervisors named election boards for the June 4 primary across several townships and wards. Roosevelt precincts must have Democratic majorities. Republican-leaning precincts may have Republican boards, with two exceptions for city councilors and township clerks. Details list judges and clerks by precinct, including Dayton, Douglas, Franklin, Lafayette, Leroy, Sumner, Warren, Washington, and Waverly wards.
Frank H. Munger of Bremer County died at University Hospital Iowa City after a five month illness and a kidney and bladder operation. He served as city clerk and school board secretary, was Waverly Savings Bank assistant cashier, and earlier a Bremer County abstract partner. He is survived by his widow and three daughters. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
Joe Gardner, a patient at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis for five months, visited his family for a week and shows improvement but will need several more months of treatment before a cure. Rev. T. R. Collins drove him back to the hospital Tuesday.
Roy Pell of Marshalltown a torney and Chef-De-Gare of the 40 and 8 veterans organization in Iowa will address Memorial Day services on Wednesday May 30 at Harlington cemetery committees appointed to organize the day’s events and plans.
Ruth Cooper and Frank Clewell were married at the Congregational church in Waterloo on Sunday afternoon May 6 at four o'clock, performed by Rev J Richmond Morgan. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Howard Clewell, brother and sister in law of the groom. Waverly marching band took second place in Class B at the state music contest in Iowa City last week under R V Leach. The Irene Busch cafe on West Bremer Avenue was raided by Sheriff Frank Sager on a complaint by Edna Remington of Janesville, finding two one gallon cans and five small bottles of alcohol. Darrel Miller, five months old, is in Mercy hospital with a broken leg after a sister carrying him tripped and fell out of a doorway.
