Tripoli high school, county champions, earned a bye in the district tournament to be held at Fredericksburg May 12 and 13. They will face Strawberry Point in the second round, with Decorah Rockwell Fredericksburg Postville Wadena Elma Shell Rock Kensett and Rockford also represented. The Tripoli team is regarded as one of the outstanding squads of the year and has strong prospects to advance.
Miss Mildred E. Smith was reelected county superintendent of schools for a three year term at a county convention of 23 delegates in the court room. She won on the first ballot with 17 votes, while C A Brause, Henry T Schell and Mrs Mervil Boeck received four, two and none respectively. Three board members were reelected by acclamation: John Koeberle, E C Stumme and George H Moeller for six year terms. County Auditor H J Stumme called the meeting and E W Heyer was chosen chairman. Tellers were J B Robertson and Geo Jahnke. Delegates from districts listed, Beatty-Bennett tax reduction law discussed at adjournment.
Frederika high school's senior class presents a comedy Friday evening May 12 with the cast including Daisy Bell Arline Carroll Alice Bisnette LaVera Bockhaus Cora Ruth Carroll and others. The high school orchestra will provide music.
About 200 attend a Waverly meeting favoring repeal of the eighteenth amendment. Officials name Burton E Sweet and H W Bathke temporary chairs and select delegates including Lee O Peacock and Lawrence Hertlein with Ray Anti Delegate presiding at the dry convention. A county organization is formed to support ratification of the proposed constitutional repeal.
Jeanette Morf six-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Bert Morf suffered a deep scalp wound ear injury and body bruises after darting into the street on south Main. The oncoming driver from Mantoon Illinois swerved to avoid her and the child is recovering with no serious conditions expected.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Warneke hosted a five hundred party Friday night in Frederika township as a sendoff for Mrs. Clyde Andrews. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Haag Sumner and several local couples. Prizes awarded for card scores and lunch served by Mrs. Warneke and daughter. Mrs. Andrews will return to Findley Ohio. Mr. Warneke recovering at home.
Miss Adella Koch ends her year teaching the Old Town school with afternoon games and a wiener roast for pupils. Mrs. E. J. Henning will teach the Old Town school next year.
E R Cronk Montour commander of the third district of the American Legion has been engaged by Bockhaus Bartels post to be the main speaker at Memorial Day services May 30. Cronk, a popular Legion figure state wide, is recommended as a candidate for state commander at the August convention.
Mrs F W Klein and her daughter Kathryn with Mrs F Lindeman of St Paul traveled to Waterloo on Saturday to spend the day visiting friends.
A promotion in Tripoli offers one free baby chick for every dollar spent or paid on account. Hale Hatchery supplies standard chick breeds to coupon holders. Merchants and professionals issue one coupon per dollar received, with a list of participants to be published. The program aims to draw shoppers and boost local trade.
The Tripoli municipal band will perform at the Iowa bandmasters convention in Waverly on Thursday May 18. More than fifteen bands from the region will play in the afternoon with a 350 piece massed band closing the day. Noted leaders Karl L King O M Van Doren and Ed Chennette will attend. An hour concert by Cedar Falls municipal band precedes the massed band at the fair grounds.
Alice Krueger and Alwin Maurer will sing on the Star Gazing program Saturday evening May 13 over radio station WMT at 9 15. Their first number is That Wonderful Mother of Mine and the second The Prayer Perfect. Mrs. Wm H Warner will accompany them at the piano.
The marriage of Miss Martha Leistikow daughter of Mr and Mrs August Leistikow southeast of Readlyn and Gustav Buls son of Mrs Otto Buls northwest of Tripoli occurred at Immanuel Lutheran church in Klinger Sunday afternoon. The Rev L Yockey pastor of the church performed the ceremony.
Stockholders on May 4 vote to reorganize under state banking law Senate File 483 with 100 percent assessment to free 50 percent of checking funds. Directors resignations and new director elected while salaries must be approved by the banking department and a creditor-focused trust fund will be created.
Miss Laura Gebert of near Plainfield and Harry Bockhaus of Ionia wed on May 3 1933 at the Evangelical church in Siegel in a double ring ceremony. About 135 guests attended a reception at the bride’s parents and out of town relatives joined in best wishes.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Koch with son Stanley and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kirchman visited Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gaede east of town at their Old Town home on Sunday.
Tripoli Auxiliary will observe Poppy Day on Saturday May 27 the Saturday before Memorial Day. The unit prepares for the observance and seeks cooperation from organizations and individuals. Poppies sold in Iowa are made by Iowa disabled war veterans in their homes and the local unit ordered poppies from a Waterloo veteran. Early orders helped provide winter employment for the veterans.
Readlyn special notices report the marriage of Arnold C. Meyerhoff of Readlyn to Miss Lillian Ernsting of Lowden on April 30. The ceremony occurred in Lowden with Rev. H. Maas officiating. Mrs. Meyerhoff is Louise Ernsting's daughter of London and taught in local public schools. They will reside in Readlyn after June 1.
William Medders aged 90 died at his Bremer County home on Wednesday May 3 after a stroke. Born June 1, 1842 in Elkhart Indiana, he moved to Iowa in 1855 and married Agnes Brown on November 18 1869. Survived by wife three daughters and one son, funeral held at Koch funeral home with Rev Elmer K Tiedt officiating.
Miss LaVerne Keettle and Leslie K Hull of this city married at the bride’s parents home in Lyons Nebraska on Saturday afternoon April 29. Rev L A Thompson officiated. The bride, a University of Nebraska journalism graduate, has worked in Nebraska and Iowa papers. The groom, a Wisconsin University journalism graduate, is a Waverly Journal publisher and ads head. They plan to live in this city after a brief wedding trip.

W H Mooney reports the state railway commission approved Chicago Rock Island and Pacific plans to drop two passenger trains serving Waverly and substitute a single combination train. Effective May 38th, the Cedar Rapids bound 10:10 a.m. and Cedar Rapids to Waverly 5:10 p.m. trains are replaced by a Cedar Rapids to Manly service from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The carrier estimated mail express and passenger revenue at 23 cents per mile with expenses at 45 cents per mile.
Waverly friends and relatives learn of Roy Colburn a former city resident who died at his home in Green Bay Wisconsin from kidney trouble and related complications. He had been ill only a short time. Survived by his father and step mother Mr and Mrs Charles Colburn and his brother Amos Colburn.
