William Mitchell warns Akron readers about a Navy airship’s vast reach and strategic value, contrasting it with costly surface aircraft. Miss Laura Whitaker a Sumner high school teacher led nine members of the normal training class to Maxfield No 1 north of Readlyn from Tuesday to Friday. The school chosen as one of the county’s two best for observation and practice teaching. Mrs Lydia Schick praised for teaching. A check was presented to Mrs Schiek in appreciation of the time given.
The free health movie program at the opera house on child’s health day Friday afternoon May 1 drew a large crowd. Dr Clasen could not attend to give his talk. Ice cream cones were served to about 265 attendees. The event was sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary Red Cross and Improvement Club.
Denver opens the season against Tripoli in the Cedar Valley League at the local ballpark Sunday. Eight teams this year are Clarksville Denver Dunkerton Fredericksburg Readlyn Waverly and Tripoli with Readlyn and Dunkerton as newcomers. A pre season win by Tripoli over Waterloo Merchants Workmen 6 to 3 featured Krueger’s 15 strikeouts.
Rev. F. E. Byers of Waterloo has been employed to take charge of the pastorate at the Congregational church here. He will assume duties immediately and move his family to Tripoli by early June. Byers is an ordained minister with a wife and four children and comes highly recommended.
At the Tripoli Opera House association annual stockholders meeting held Tuesday afternoon the board reelected R. W. Rettig J. F. Keough H. H. Nevermann H. C. Moeller and Wm. Ambrose as directors for the coming year. Directors will later choose president secretary and treasurer. Little new business was discussed and no dividends were declared.
Last week Wednesday Co. B. Kelsey shipped two pedigreed wire haired fox terriers to Perry Kennels in New Jersey between Caldwell and New York City. The dogs are sold mostly to tourists from New York City.
Mrs. Charles Berlin 68 longtime Tripoli resident dies at home after brief illness from heart trouble and pneumonia. Born Mary Luehrsen in Palantine Illinois June 1862 she married Charles Berlin in 1883 and moved to Iowa. Funeral at St Peters Evangelical church with burial in St Peters cemetery.
Des Moines report details that the Forty fourth Iowa General Assembly passed 342 bills at an estimated total cost of $375000. Salaries dominated expenses with $161000 for members, $98001 for employees, and $63234.83 for member expenses. Printing and miscellaneous costs added thousands, with mileage totaling $2135.90 and general omnibus expenses at $8224.27.
Mrs Mary Wilharm of Waterloo arrived Friday and is visiting her daughters Mrs C B Kelsey north of town and Mrs Clara Claus in the city. She recently returned from California where she spent the winter.
A pleasant surprise greeted Mr and Mrs Will Blume south of town on Sunday afternoon as relatives arrived with baskets to mark their twentieth wedding anniversary on May 4. A music filled afternoon led to a 5 o clock picnic dinner and a large decorated cake by Mrs W H Brockman. A purse was given in remembrance. Attending were Mr and Mrs Harry Reinhart and daughters Marion and Iggy Osceola IA. Mr and Mrs Chas Blume and family. Mr and Mrs Arthur Diekman. Mrs Minnie Blume and Lizzie Waterloo. Dividend No 1 of 10 percent will be paid May 12 13 to depositors of the Tripoli State Bank now in the state banking department since 1929. G W Berger examiner in charge will issue checks at American Savings Bank. The defunct bank had time deposits 77944 69, checking 89362 22 and savings 3567 79. Bills receivable 206 286 93. Bills payable 42 000. Real estate owned substantial has been sold. more liquidations and further dividends possible. Berger stated Tuesday.
St John’s Lutheran invites parishioners to a Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. and English Divine Service at 10:00 a.m. for a special Mother’s Day observance. Mrs N B Finkelsen and her son Junior from Adams Minnesota join Mr and Mrs Howard Speer and their children Joyce Vernon and Raymond of Charles City for a Sunday visit with the Rosenthal family in town.
W F Shilling of the Federal Farm Board will speak at the Bremer county Farm Bureau picnic in Tripoli on Thursday June 18. He will discuss cooperative marketing and has met farm groups nationwide. The event draws dairy interests from nearby counties with planning by Bremer county farm bureau and Tripoli commercial club.
At a Tripoli Independent School District meeting the board set aside February 11 election results and scheduled a new vote for June 2 on a $40,000 bond to build and equip a schoolhouse. A site question will also be on the June ballot, deciding between the present grounds or a new site.
Oran Iowa. John Keahler a lifelong resident and prominent farmer died at his home Monday night at age 55. Survived by a son Lawrence his wife having died years ago. Keahler was a director of the Oran creamery and active in farming circles.
Mr and Mrs Howard Speer of Charles City John Lewiston of Rose Creek Minnesota and Mrs John Speer of Leroy Minnesota were guests Sunday of Ed Rosenthal and family Her daughter Beverly Joyce and Mrs Lewiston had been visiting at the Rosenthal home the past week and returned home Sunday evening.
O A Llewellyn 63 died at home in Sumner after a nine week illness of intestinal flu with complications. Funeral held Tuesday at 2 pm in the Methodist church Pastor P P Pease officiated. Burial in Dunham Grove near Randalia. Born November 9 1868 near Randalia. Married Ina Austin February 14 1901. He was a rural carrier from Sumner for 20 years. Survived by widow seven children two granddaughters three sisters and three brothers.
Tripoli high school senior class will stage The Devil's Scrap Book a three act comedy drama at the opera house Friday evening May 15. The 12 member cast rehearsed for two weeks under Miss Beryl McCreery directing. Graduating class comprises 19 students including Millard Eichmann Clarence Goodenbour Victor Gaede and Edith Hunemuller. Commencement is set for May 22 at the Tripoli Opera House with Rev E T Gough delivering the address.
Miss Blanch Pape of West Union married Floyd Sauerbrei son of Geo Sauerbrei at St John s Lutheran parsonage with Rev E A Hant officiating. Attendants were Walter and Mrs Sauerbrei. The couple plan to live in Tripoli with he helping on the farm.
Miss Vada Schwein drove to Waterloo Saturday evening and was accompanied home by her sister Miss Minnie who is attending Gates Business College there. Minnie remained at her home until Sunday evening.
Camp located southeast of Waverly lists periods from June 15 to 21, June 22 to 28, July 5 to 19, July 20 to August 2, and August 8 to 16 with sleeping accommodations for 64 scouts in each period. A colt breaking demonstration at Elmer Sauer brei farm east of Waverly is set for May 7 with three unridden horses prepared for Mr. Linn to break.
Jerome Young aged 60 died at his home Monday morning after a week with pneumonia. He moved to Waverly from a Nashua area farm two years ago. Survived by his wife four daughters two sons and four daughters named Viva Borglum California Kenneth White Plainfield Harry Harrison Nashua Perry Young Nashua and Amy Leslie at home. Funeral held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at home with Rev Vandenscoten of Plainfield Baptist Church officiating. Burial in Greenwood cemetery Nashua.
Miss Patronella Cavanaugh daughter of John Cavanaugh of this city and a Waverly high school graduate who has taught in county schools and Plainfield marries Will Ward a Grundy Center native and Highway Commission surveyor. The couple will reside in Grundy Center after the school term ends.
Paul Bopp aged 21 living north of Waterloo died when the plane he drove crashed at 8 30 Sunday on Louis Ol trogge farm four miles north of Denver. The aircraft, built by Merl Karl of Readlyn Iowa, had wings attached elsewhere. Karl was on the farm but not near the wreck and described the airborne maneuver he witnessed.
