Tripoli Elementary students under teacher Craig Hemmen collected about 30 844 cans weighing 1 402 pounds. The cans were sold for 210 30 at Waterloo Recycling Center to fund a science table. The contest ends with the winning class identifying local fish and plant life and conducting fishing to conclude the study.
The Iowa Conservation Commission notes that lands under its jurisdiction are open to mushroom gathering during public hours. Areas include state parks forests recreation areas and fish and game lands as morel or sponge type mushrooms begin to appear.
Denver High graduate James Lehman has been named for the Who's Who Among Students in American Vocational and Technical Schools Honors Program for 1976 77. He will receive a certificate at school and his biography will appear in the publication. James, a 1975 Denver High School alum, studied drafting in Phoenix and is set to graduate June 4 as a junior draftsman.
The Tripoli Area Housing Corporation met at Tripoli City Hall on April 28 to gather information from prospective tenants. Four parties expressed interest in the units. An option on two Southwest Tripoli lots was approved and a fundraising committee was formed to buy the land, meeting May 10 to decide next steps.
Reminder to voters in Bremer County that permanent registration is required to vote in upcoming Primary and Oral Elections. County officials explain the 1975 law and urge voters to confirm address and name changes to ensure correct precinct assignment and eligibility.

Americans for Constitutional Action named Third District Congressman Charles Grassley winner of the Eighth Biennial Distinguished Service Award for 1975. ACA Board Chair Charlene Baker cited his voting record defending constitutional principles. The award was presented at a Washington reception May 5.
An Iowa State University study funded by the Federal Railroad Administration finds little difference in employment, population, and retail trends between towns that lost rail service in the 1960s and 70s and similar towns on operating lines. Community leaders report continued or increased business activity after abandonment, with three of four towns adding jobs. Rail loss only partly explains population shifts, and retail sales generally grew, though some towns on abandoned lines saw slower growth. Elevators on abandoned lines often improve earnings after an initial dip, while highway traffic increases but highway costs vary by region.
Tri poli Community Schools will hold commencement Sunday May 16 at 2 00 p m in the high school gym. 54 graduates include two foreign exchange students. Tom Petersen KWWL vice president news will give the address. Petersen has 15 years in broadcasting and leads KWWL news. He began at KWWL in 1968 after working at WEMP Milwaukee and WEBC Duluth. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and Milwaukee Institute of Technology. Petersen and family live in Waterloo. Mr and Mrs John Sassmann celebrate 60th anniversary May 9 with open house 2 30 to 4 30 p m at Faith United Church of Christ Tripoli. Children Mildred Klemp Ruth Fink Robert and Evelyn Vega host, with 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. John Sassmann wed Martha Wolfgram May 14 1916. Open house invites friends and relatives. gifts declined.
Tripoli high golf squads dominated a triangular meet at Maple Hills with boys posting 186 to beat Jesup 200 and Dunkerton 223. Medalist Mitch Doepke shot 44 as Dave Alcock 46, Schnieders 46, Struck 50 totaled 186. Girls triumphed 230 as Debi Sassman led with 49. schedule included non qualifiers.
The Tripoli Men and Women City Bowling Association banquet occurs Saturday evening May 15 with a 6 30 meal at City Hall and a 9 p m dance at Maple Hills Tickets cost 250 per person for meal and dance or 100 for dance only Deadline to buy is Saturday May 8 Tickets available from Bowl Inn and local organizers.
Tripoli High won a triangular track meet with 86 points, defeating Janesville and Plainfield. Individual highlights include Tim Brase discus first, Jeff Sanderson shot put first, Tim Pierce 100 yd dash second, Al Brandhorst 2 mile first, and multiple top finishes across relays and sprints. Upcoming meets include J-Hawk at Jesup May 7 and Dunkerton conference meet May 11.
