Tax Bill Recasts Iowa Revenue Plan With Higher Sales Tax
After two weeks of haggling the Iowa House scrapped its omnibus tax bill and approved a measure boosting the sales tax from 2 to 3 percent. The bill also extends the tax to hotel and motel rentals and adds a fifth cent to cigarette packs, aiming for about 40 million dollars in annual revenue. A Senate committee meanwhile proposed a similar package increasing the corporate tax to 4 percent and adding a 3 percent service tax on lodging. Governor Hughes voiced conditional support depending on spending plans for the new funds.

Hog prices levied by storage stocks may ease summer gains
Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says larger cold storage pork stocks will temper this summer's hog price rise. He expects summer marketings to be similar to last year, but with 18 percent more pork in storage, likely limiting interior hog price spikes. A stronger June to August is possible, yet fall prices could fall if Spring plans to raise more pigs are followed.
