Adams, Marsh game manager, reports about 125 pelicans sighted at Sweets Marsh northeast of Tripoli. Birds normally migrate up the Missouri River to Canada. wingspan 6 to 10 feet, weight about 15 pounds. First spotted Saturday.
Bremer County voters choose soil commissioners on April 26 from 2:30 p.m. at three county banks Revion Creager seeks re election and Blume compete Creager, an WWII veteran, owns a Sumner area farm and has led soil conservation efforts Blume runs a large Sumner township farm with tiling and pasture operations.
The Waphigh school honor list for the fifth six weeks shows straight A and B averages. Seniors named include Ruth Bast Donna Mary Richards Elaine Heike Janet Youngblut and others across sophomore junior and freshman classes. Hospital news notes patient statuses for Schuldt and Lahmann at local hospitals.
An international student weekend from April 26 to 28 will involve 110 Iowa college students from 35 countries hosted by 86 area families in 53 Town counties. In Bremer county three host families are Harmon Hildebrandt, Dr L J Magnall, and Roland Arns, hosting students from Iran, Thailand, and Nigeria respectively, all attending State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls.
Bremer County Extension Family Living committee and the Extension Home Economist will host a kitchen tour on May 3 and May 8. The May 3 event is for residents west of Highway 63 and the May 8 event for those east of Highway 63. Times and locations will be published next week. The tour will showcase principles of efficient planning and the use of time, energy and storage areas.
The vocal soloists and ensembles who will compete in the state music contest this weekend at Postville give a public recital Friday evening April 26. The recital starts at 7 30 o'clock in the Tripoli High school auditorium with no admission charge.
The Frederika P.T.C met Wednesday evening with Wartburg College’s David Olson discussing Physical Fitness. Elected for the coming year were Lloyd Kingery president, Mrs Arnold Garner vice president, Mrs Norbert Meighan secretary, and Mrs C W Davison treasurer.
The third district convention of Veterans and Auxiliaries of World War I will be held at Shell Rock on April 28 at 1 30 p m. The gathering invites all veterans and auxiliary members to participate in the proceedings and related activities.
Tripoli High hosts an industrial arts exhibition and a fashion show Tuesday evening April 30. The event starts at 7 30 pm with the fashion show at 8 30 pm, followed by refreshments in the auditorium. Demonstrations on ship equipment use and student projects will be shown.
Iowa third district spring conference of the American Legion and their Legion Auxiliary will be April 29 at Tama. District comprises Benton Black Hawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama Wright. District commander Ray Formanek presides. Auxiliary president Mrs Dale S Baird conducts Auxiliary meetings. Registrations begin 8:45 a m. service school at 10 a m. afternoon meeting to elect district officers and delegates to the national convention. evening banquet planned.
Cedar-Wapsie conference teams vie in four sectional sites with May 1 and 2 games. Denver hosts upper bracket Janesville against Tripoli, and Plainfield faces Waverly-Shell Rock in the lower. Final games are set for May 38 and May 3.

Denver Library marks National Library Week with a Saturday story hour at 10 a m read by Mrs Marie Buss. In 1962 circulation reached a high of 30 971 books as shelves were added and many new volumes including American Encyclopedia. Librarian Mrs Arthur Kurtz invites public visits. hours are Mon 2 5 p m Wed 12 5 and 6 30 8 30 p m Sat 12 5 p m.
Iowa Highway Patrol license examining team served 98 people at Tripoli Town Hall on Saturday. They issued 92 licenses including 13 new operators and 50 chauffeur renewals while recording 6 written test failures and no vehicle failures. The team will return May 18.
Sharon Leonhardt of Wapsie Valley High will represent her school at the Easter Iowa Band festival in Cedar Rapids on May 18. She was chosen by band members and will ride in a convertible in the 1:30 p m parade, also competing for Miss Eastern Iowa among 60 entrants. The queen will be crowned at Kingston Stadium at 7:15 p m. Sharon is an alto saxophonist in concert and dance bands, sings in multiple choirs, and is a cheerleader.
Tripoli High School presents a spring concert on Wednesday May 1 at 7 30 PM in the school auditorium. The program features the girls glee club mixed chorus and concert band performing contest numbers and other selections open to the public with free admission. A Band Mothers meeting follows the concert.
The Iowa House, eight days into tax relief deliberations, sent a simple sales tax measure to the Senate amid 65 amendments. A pari mutuel betting proposal failed 51 to 49, one session vote. A 10 percent tax on trading stamps and a 3 percent corporate tax on cooperatives were approved, while extending the sales tax to services was defeated 60 to 40.
The American Cancer Society released a quarterly report for Bremer County noting living memorials for John Spier and S. C. Kimm. Chapter chairman is Mrs. Malinda Buss of Denver. Contributions fund research education and service toward controlling cancer.
Tripoli Panthers place second with 55 points behind West Central of Maynard which leads at 621? points. Fredericksburg trails with 391? points as Tripoli details show first and second place finishes by Hinrichs Schwemm Dettmer Biermann Drewis Rausch and others across sprints hurdles distance and field events.
The Wapsie Valley High school's music department will present a spring concert on Wednesday May 1 featuring the mixed chorus girls glee club select soloists and small groups with the band. Fred Langrock leads instrumental instruction and Wayne Grannemann directs vocals. The program begins at 8 p m and the public is invited.
Cedar Valley amateur league met at Tripoli Town Hall with six towns represented. Six teams are Tripoli Readlyn Denver Greene Allison Janesville and two potential additions being Sumner and Fredericksburg. Chas Gebhard reelected president will contact the remaining towns. Play opens May 26 with schedule forthcoming. Tripoli Red Sox co managers named Harley Bergmann and Richard Schmidt. Each team limited to two outside players and local talent must be within a nine mile radius.
Gov Harold Hughes ordered two inquiries after reports that legislators and officials received free or reduced hospital care at University Hospital Iowa City and that Highway Commission members were reimbursed up to 1800 for home office expenses. He asked Virgil Hancher for a report on hospital subsidies and questioned the Home Office allowances.
Eighty four attendees at Tripoli Town Hall as the Tripoli High girls basketball squad receives recognition for winning Cedar-Wapsie conference and sectional tournaments. Coach Opheim presents the squad with players listed by class and accolades, including a new valuable player plaque honoring standout performers. Special tribute is paid to Mrs. Robert Campbell for her Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame induction.
Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli will host the Northeast Iowa Association Youth Rally on Sunday April 28 with registrations at 2 p.m. a 75 cent fee includes supper. A business meeting at 2 30 p.m. will elect officers. About 300 youths expected. reservations requested by local members. Junior High captains Sam Kehe or Teresa Wilmarth to be notified by April 26. Governor Hughes proclaims April 22 27 as Student Nurse week to spark interest in nursing across the state. Schools of nursing plan publicity events such as newspaper features radio spot announcements store displays and school visits. The program covers general medical surgical pediatric obstetric and psychiatric nursing.
Harvey Hildebrandt entered Mercy hospital in Waverly on Tuesday for X rays and observation. Local staff planned follow up exams after initial screening and imaging.
