In a dramatic speech from the Reichstag balcony Hitler consolidates control for four years, declaring the movement’s first chapter closed and vowing a second. Roosevelt plans government bonds up to potentially 2 billion dollars, with relief measures and beer legislation advancing.
About 75 relatives and friends gathered March 26 to honor William and Amanda Haase on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. Rev Theo Thomas spoke, silver wreaths were worn, dinner served, and a silver purse presented. Attendees included many local families and relatives. The Haases married March 26 1908 at St Peters Evangelical Church and have daughter Esther and sons Elmer and Earl.
Funeral services for Florence Ragsdale were held in Indianapolis, Ind. She died from injuries after being struck by an automobile. A Sumner High School 1931 graduate, she worked at Shales Pharmacy and pursued postgrad work at the local high school. She had been living with her grandmother Mrs. F. C. LeMaster since last June. Survived by her parents, two brothers, and a sister.
Miss Alice Horsley received a pleasant surprise Saturday evening to mark her birthday. Guests included Vernice Conklin Alice Krueger Charlotte Bennett Margaret Debel Irene Delson Roberta Brewer Zatha Schmidt Elinor Kelsey Glen Byers Hadley Brewer Del Monte Byers Oliver Brewer Jack Daryl Byers Mrs F W Klein and Mrs E F Byers. The party featured jigsaw puzzles and games followed by lunch prepared by Mrs Horsley.
Mrs. Adella Habernicht, 70, a native of Bremer county and sister of A. D. Allen of Sumner, died at a Benton Harbor hospital Saturday forenoon. She was brought to Sumner for services at United Brothers church and burial in Wilson's grave cemetery beside her daughter. Surviving are two sons Harvey and Harold of Berrien Springs, a daughter Cleo near Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a sister Miss Libbie Allen of Berrien Springs. She was born in Dayton township, worked for the late G P Linn, and lived in South America for many years, recently at Berrien Springs.
H A Morey of the economy ticket was elected mayor of Waverly by 25 votes, 1 027 to 1 002 over incumbent F A Osincup. Total ballots 2 058. The economy ticket swept all but one office, with Charles Ducker defeating C H Russell for first ward councilman 152 to 127.
Readlyn special town election held Monday March 27 elected Mayor August F Meyerhoff councilmen Christ Miller Paul Matthias H J Schumacher F L Diekman Carl Everding town treasurer E C Stummer assessor Wm F Meyerhoff with 160 votes cast.
The Ladies Improvement club schedules a regular meeting at their club rooms on Wednesday afternoon April 5. All members are urged to attend due to important business. Lunch will be served by the hostesses in charge.
Henry Buhman age 84 longtime Bremer County resident died at his home on Saturday March 25 at 7 pm after a year of declining health. He moved to the county in 1862 and to the city about 26 years ago. Survived by six sons and three daughters, funeral set for Wednesday at 2 pm at the First Evangelical church with a German service to follow. burial in Evangelical cemetery east of the city. The grand jury also indicted Chris Hirsch for illegal liquor possession and transportation, with contempt charges arising from an injunction. trial likely at the March term.
Edwin Ihde aged 30 from a farm between here and Horton died at Mercy hospital last Wednesday after falling about thirty feet while toping trees. He suffered a skull fracture and was in critical condition. Survived by wife four daughters and his mother in Shell Rock. Funeral services were held at Kaiser funeral home and burial was in Horton.
At Charles City the two day music contest featured twelve schools including Waverly Charles City Nashua Lime Springs Dunkerton Cresco Riceville Greene Osage Marble Rock Shell Rock and Applington. Waverly captured firsts in concert band trombone solo girl s glee club and piano, plus six seconds across chamber brass trumpet oboe mixed group and girl s small vocal group. Despite poor weather many locals traveled to hear the competition.
The Royal Neighbors will hold their regular meeting for April at their hall on Tuesday April 4. All members are urged to be present. After the business session a social evening is planned with refreshments served.
William Schultz Jr son of Mr and Mrs Wm Schultz of this city owns a $35 wrist watch. It came from Omar Flour milling company for a prize joke read over the radio last week. William received one of the grand Omar prizes. Farmers Store acts as local distributor for Omar flour and other Omar products.
Announcement of the marriage of Miss Anna Mueller and John Wiegmann of Allison united in Stockton Illinois on September 10 1932 to their many friends. The bride daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Mueller resides on a farm near the city. She is a graduate of Waverly High School and took a business course at Wartburg College four years ago and for the past few years has been employed.
Mrs F W Hale and her son Fran cis drove to Sumner Tuesday morning on a business trip.
Nashua man Harry Parsons aged 20 was killed in a hunting accident Monday evening when a companion slipped on ice and discharged a shotgun. Derwood Costello, 20, was behind Parsons. the load struck Parsons and he died while being moved. Parsons’ family and siblings are named. Costello’s family is noted. a similar accident killed a Costello relative eight years earlier in the same area.
Readlyn Special Mr and Mrs John Widdel marked 50 years of marriage on March 26 1933 with family guests at their Readlyn home. The event featured a piano program by Prof F G Torgler a reading by Paula Widdel a gold decorated cake and a gold purple themed table. They wed March 26 1883 at Emanuel Lutheran Klinger Iowa. The couple long active in church and community including three years as Readlyn mayor.
Lois Lorraine Schultz two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schultz died Monday forenoon of bronchial asthma. Services were held Thursday afternoon at one o'clock at home and at St. Paul's Lutheran church with Rev. Otto C. Schultz officiating. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran cemetery at Spring Fountain. Surviving are her parents a brother Arland and two sisters Verla and Marion.
Stockholders of American Savings Bank vote to pursue a Depositor's Agreement Plan to rehabilitate the bank. The plan aims to eliminate slow assets, extend loan liquidations, and keep deposits earning 2 percent for up to three years while assets are reorganized. A mass meeting of depositors is planned after an examiner assesses inventories.
Reverend Edwin J Koch pastor of the Evangelical Church of Peace in Marshalltown resigns to accept a call from Bethlehem Evangelical Church of Louisville Kentucky effective July 1. He came to Marshalltown in 1928 and served civic groups, the Ministerial Alliance and Deaconess Hospital board, preparing to move after five years of service.
The Bremer County taxpayers league will hold a meeting in Tripoli on Friday evening March 31 at 7 30 in the American Legion hall. John Wiere of Iowa Falls will be the principal speaker with another talk from a Hardin county farmer. All interested in the tax problem are invited.
