Wapsie Flood Reaches Record High Along Valley
Heavy rains and melted snow drove the Wapsipinicon river to a historic high last Friday, stretching over a mile wide in places. Floodwaters receded slowly yet caused little farmer damage, though roads and embankments were undermined and sandbags and rock were used to protect bridges and grades. In Waverly Cedar River rose rapidly flooding streets, basements, the bank basement, and nearby buildings while pumps ran through the night to control water and traffic was halted on Stockwell bridge.

Mr and Mrs Ed Niemeyer and family moved Thursday from the John Piersdorf residence in the southwest part of town to the residence of Mrs Emma Pries near there. The Niemeyer vacated residence will be occupied by Mr and Mrs Lloyd Carpenter and family who moved there Monday from the Boderman residence near St Johns Lutheran church where they lived the past winter. Ford Buesing left Saturday for his home at Holquim Washington. Buesing had been here since early November and spent the winter at the home of his sister Mrs Mary Schultz.

Death Summons Pioneer Citizen Henry Schlichting
Henry Schlichting, Tripoli's oldest resident, died Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at his grandson's home southwest of town after a brief illness. He would have turned 91 on April 1. A former street cleaner, he handed that post to retire a year ago after paving on Main Street. Surviving daughters are Mrs. Aug ist Homan of Waverly and Mrs. Herman Lampbrecht of Waterloo, with his wife deceased. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced.

Laundry Truck Destroyed by Fire West of Oelwein
A City Laundry truck in Oelwein was wrecked by fire Saturday morning on the road near highway 59. The vehicle was a total loss except for five tires and most laundry packages were saved. A broken gas line near the exhaust is suspected as the cause. Lightning also struck the elevator of the Farmers Cooperative Co. during a storm and damaged it. Manager Nick Schnuer prevented a larger blaze by quickly responding to a fire in feed spouts overnight, keeping further damage at bay.

Hit by Auto In County Seat Child Escapes Serious Injury
Jean Bushnell six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs H E Bushnell was struck by a car driven by Ed Slack while crossing the street near her home. The Slack car was slow and the girl suffered a head bruise and a leg injury. Mercy hospital X rays showed a bent bone but not a break and she is recovering.

Wartburg three faculty to join Clinton college merger
It was announced that three Wartburg College faculty will move to Clinton Iowa next year as the two colleges merge. Prof A W Swenson heads physics and chemistry, Prof Ottersburg teaches history, and Prof Hiltner teaches religion and Greek. They will continue their current departments at Clinton. The move ends years of service in Waverly and others may follow.

Arrangements made for a VFW demonstrated sponsored celebration on April 6 to mark the 16th anniversary of the declaration of war. Veterans of all wars invited.
