Lighter cattle weights could raise beef prices, ISU economist says
Farm Economist J William Uhrig of Iowa State University argues that reducing marketing weights by about 60 pounds could lift cattle prices by roughly $2 per hundredweight. With spring marketings 10 percent above January, choice steer prices may fall unless weights are trimmed. Uhrig notes 6 to 8 percent more cattle would be marketed April through June, and growing beef demand absorbs only about 3 percent annual growth. He warns feeders face rising costs beyond 1 100 pounds and that finishing cattle for grade is crucial to avoid losses.
