Oil Discovery Near Keota First Iowa Oil Well Of Promise
Iowa readers learn of a small but historic oil find northeast of Keota in Washington County. Natural Gas Pipe Line Co. of America drilled a discovery well during testing for an underground gas storage reservoir. The Pecatonica member of the Platteville limestone yields oil around 1,000 feet deep, with initial flow about 14 gallons per hour, far below commercial norms but seen as a hopeful first step for Iowa's oil prospects. Government interest and prior bills for $75,000 incentives are noted, along with Governor Hughes’s light reaction to the momentous jar of oil from Iowa’s first bona fide well.
