Hoover proposes a one-third armaments cut saving about 15 billion dollars over ten years. France rejects the plan, insisting it must defend its gains. Ishii warns the U S to stay out of Asia while Borah supports the President and Churchill calls for submarine abolition.
More than sixty five floats are assured for the Washington bicentennial celebration at Waverly on July 4. The day features an autogiro display, Governor Turner’s talk, a Washington pageant with over two hundred actors, a large fireworks show, massed rural school choir and band, a Cedar Valley league baseball game, and a Becker Chapman drum and bugle corps performance. Free viewing and picnics are encouraged with multiple stands selling meals and loudspeakers to reach all attendees.
Frederika special report says Miss Macieda Zwanziger of Waterloo, a former Frederika girl, wed Delbert Whited of Waterloo June 11 in Galena Illinois. They left for a wedding trip to Yellowstone Park and Colorado, plan to visit relatives in Kansas, then reside in Waterloo. Zwanziger is Jennie Zwanziger's daughter. She studied at Waverly High School and Gates Business College, taught near Waverly, and worked in the county recorder's office in Waterloo before marriage. Whited has worked at H. H. Mame Co. for over five years.
Jess D. Sickler of Ogden secret ary of the Farmers holiday association met with Bremer county farm bureau officers and members on Monday morning June 27 to present the farmers' holiday movement to the executive board. He said the movement grew from plans formed by about thirty six farm organizations in 1927 in the corn belt committee for agricultural relief.
Rev and Mrs Koehler were honored with a farewell by the Ladies Aid and husbands at the church basement. Guests included Rev and Mrs Pfieffer Siegel Rev and Mrs Kehle Ripon Wis Rev and Mrs Hilli gardt and Rev and Mrs Hackman. They thanked supporters and invited visits to Fond du Lac where their latchstring will hang. Koehler plans farewell sermon July 10 and will leave for the new field soon after.
The Royal Neighbors lodge will meet at their hall Tuesday evening July 5 for the regular gathering. All members are urged to be present.
A large Wedemeier family gathering occurred at Readlyn city park with siblings and cousins from Illinois and California. Honorees Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mader of Oakland and relatives from Ave, Nashville, Denver, Artesian, Tripoli, Westgate, and nearby towns attended. Weather limited attendees. meals and games followed a picnic dinner and supper before departures.
Rain halted all Cedar Valley League play across towns on Sunday July 3. Scheduled games included Nashua at Tripoli Denver at Readlyn and Dunkerton at Waverly, with heavy downpours forcing postponements.
Miss Alice Biesterfeldt and Leo Panzer were married Sunday at the Little Brown church by Rev. William Kent. The bride wore flowered georgette and white accessories. the groom a light tan suit. A wedding dinner followed at the groom’s parents’ home, marking the couple’s first steps as they plan to reside with the Panzer family.
Wescott and Winks, Sumner, closed their buying station here Wednesday morning. B. W. Diehl, the local manager during operation, will move to Oelwein to manage a buying station there.
Kittenball players from this city beat Bremer 7 to 3 on the diamond at Bremer Tuesday evening. This marked the second win over Bremer, following a victory at Tripoli park last week. Local interest grows as weekly practices continue and efforts to form three or four local kittenball groups begin.
A large group of relatives celebrated Mr. and Mrs. August Panzer’s twenty-fifth anniversary on Sunday June 26 at their city home. The event included a noon wedding date, a cafeteria style dinner, three anniversary cakes, gifts of silver, flowers, music, cards and conversation with about 75 guests from local families and nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs H H Bunger entertained at a 1 oclock dinner at their home to honor Mr and Mrs A D Krick of Chicago and celebrate their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. The event featured a Bergman family reunion with sisters and brothers visiting, a pink green and silver two tiered cake, and a biral centerpiece. Guests included A D Krick A L Johnston Walter Barnes William Bergman and Henry Bergman. The Kricks and Johnston plan a silver anniversary trip and will spend a week with local relatives.
A St Marys Catholic church ceremony Sunday morning welcomed a class of sixteen children receiving their first holy communion. Rose Meyer Maxine Hunt Lilly Lynch Marjorie Comstock Marion Scott Marty Sullivan Irene An halt Ardith Anhalt Cecelia Hunt Frances Rosel Merell Hess Roy Volk Bernard Monaghan Wanda Lynch Kathleen Lynch and Norma Lewis. After the service the sixteen and their mothers joined a breakfast in the church basement hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary.
A F Tiedmann of Knoxford Illinois arrested by Sheriff Sager May 30 with 96 gallons of alcohol in his possession. He appeared before Judge M F Edwards at Parkersburg and pled guilty, fined 300 dollars plus costs, and committed to Bremer County jail for ninety days due to lack of funds.
Waverly reports Mrs. John Smith and two sons of Syracuse arriving to spend the summer with Mrs. Smith's father B. E. Sweet. Mrs. Sweet met them in Chicago and they returned together. Sister Mary Celeste and Sister Mary Virginia from Chicago visited Mrs. W. H. Brechner and left for St. Joseph's convent in New Hampton Iowa for the summer. St. Joseph's Mercy hospital elected officers Dr. M. N. Gernsey president and Dr. R. E. Robinson secretary. Neil Kingsley named to the Naval Academy honor roll among 507 cadets.
