Waverly crowds mark July Fourth with a parade and a Bremer county fair program drawing 15,000 visitors from outside town. The evening pageant The Father of His Country reenacts 20 episodes of Washington’s life with 300 performers, led by J Kendall Lynes as Washington, and a 16-child minuet dance directed by Bonnie Miller.
Warm weather and adequate rainfall boost gardens, fruit crops, and farm fields. Strawberries big, raspberries plentiful, lawns green after rain. Corn growing fast, some high water damage, hay thin in spots but heavy in others. Oats and barley fields look good with some early oats turning golden.
A reception was held at Readlyn's local park Sunday for Rev. Paul Moeller and his bride Iris Irene Trayer of Continental Ohio. Moeller, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Aug F Moeller, is stationed at Alpena Michigan. Guests enjoyed visiting, games, and a picnic dinner. They will travel to Ohio then Alpena where they will be at home to friends. About 75 relatives and friends attended.
Postage on letters rises to 3 cents, airmail to 8 cents first ounce and 18 cents for add ons. Picture postcards stay 1 cent. New purple 3 cent stamp features Washington. Some local mail rules and higher C O D insured and registered rates take effect. Delayed delivery possible for underpaid letters. 2 cent stamps may cause mail to be returned or forwarded with extra charge.

Mr and Mrs William Harmening observed their twenty fifth wedding anniversary with a Sunday gathering at the family homestead near Potter Siding. Relatives from Triopli Waterloo Frederika Charles City Denver and other nearby locales attended a 2 pm arrival and 5 pm table service with an anniversary cake and 25 silver candles. A purse of silver was presented, and two dances followed for older and younger guests around 200 attendees.
A wedding anniversary event was held to honor the marriage of Miss Helen Meswarth and Mr. Lee Goodenbour dated June 30, 1919. They hosted Rev. and Mrs. Paul Kehle and children Paul Jr and Anna from Ripon Wisconsin and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martens from their city for an ice cream and cake supper.
Nashua's baseball club beat Tripoli 3 to 1 at home in a Cedar Valley league game. Wilson pitched for Nashua, Strike caught, while Vanderlinden and Wilharm worked for Tripoli. Nashua collected 13 hits off Vanderlinden. Tripoli had 7 off Wilson. Chandler starred for Nashua. Holmes led Tripoli. A sizable crowd saw the contest. Readlyn won 6 to 4 over Denver at Readlyn, Matthias started, Diekman finished, next Sunday Readlyn goes to Dunkerton.
Rice pitched and batted Waverly Cedar Valley league to a 7–1 win over Dunkerton Sunday. He drove in four runs with two doubles while holding Dunkerton to four hits. Gambaiani broke a finger and was replaced by Rohde. Batteries: Carnes Paige Rice Gambaiani Rohde. Sunday games listed: Fredericksburg at Tripoli Readlyn at Dunkerton Waverly at Nashua.
Tripoli's kittenball squad traveled to Sumner Tuesday evening and lost 9 to 8. Despite strong hitting by Stegeman and solid pitching from Koch, the locals could not contain Sumner's offense.
Mrs Wayne Acken and her son Robert and Mrs Russell Meyers spent Friday afternoon at Waverly in a social outing.
Democrats of Bremer county rally for a militant campaign to deliver the largest Roosevelt vote here. Delegates named for state convention, officers deferred, alternates authorized, and strong support pledged for federal state and county candidates. Republican county attorney vacancy filled by Arden L. Young. State tickets favored: Carl Fischer for state auditor and Thomas J. Martin for railroad commissioner. John Hochberger chaired, L. The Kimbal relatives gathered for their yearly reunion on Sunday July 3 at the Earl Bunth cottage southeast of Waverly near the Cedar River. The event featured a picnic dinner and afternoon games with many members from Des Moines New Hampton Waterloo Sumner Readlyn and Tripoli in attendance.
The Young Peoples League hosted a Sunday farewell party for Rev and Mrs K K Koehler in the church basement. Games and music entertained attendees and a committee served refreshments.
Jake Roeffler 89, an early city settler and Swiss native, died at Mercy hospital at 11:00 a.m. Saturday after a yearlong illness following a stroke. His brother, who lived with him, had committed suicide about three weeks prior. Survived by a South Dakota brother and a Switzerland sister, Roeffler's funeral was held at Koch funeral home Monday with burial in Harlington cemetery.
A 21 year old man recovering at Mercy hospital after Operation Vernon Konarske, treated last week for a stomach perforation due to an ulcer following a hearty dinner. He was very ill for several days but is now steadily improving. He is a nephew of Mrs. Leo Mooney of the city.
A 14 year old boy, Lester Giesler, died at an Iowa City hospital. Details show he was the son of his family, with hospital treatment cited as the cause of death and no further information available in the fragment.
Sophia Wente eighty five died at home in Sumner at 8 p m Monday. Her sister Mrs William Matthias of Readlyn was with her. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 30 p m at St Peters Lutheran Westgate Rev Otto Schultz. Burial will be beside her husband who died 29 years ago. Survived by three sons Herman John Edward and a daughter list includes Mrs Pipho Mrs Matthias of California and others from Sumner Waterloo New York City Westgate.
The Young People's League of St Peter's Evangelical Church hosts an ice cream social on the church lawn Wednesday evening July 18. Everyone is invited to attend.
