Fall bloom tips and pruning guidance for garden plants
County Extension Director Gene Vincent shares fall pruning rules for delphiniums and dahlias and best practices for roses iris and bulbs. Gardening tips for late summer planting and lawn care
The note advises a second planting of sweet corn within a week for a late summer harvest and another planting of bush green beans for a good fall crop. It suggests checking lawn mower height, with 1.5 inches as a baseline, and 2 inches to curb crabgrass. If crabgrass is established, use a post-emergence chemical per label, or hand-dig a few plants after rain.
Fall cattle market outlook lowers hope for big gains
Farm economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says fed cattle prices this fall should improve from spring levels but stay well below last fall's $30 range. He notes more cattle on feed, heavier weights, and a similar total beef output to 1961, suggesting only a modest early fall price uptick. Two-way cattle may offer a cheaper alternative for feeders.
