Corn outlook shapes Iowa feeder cattle profits this fall

Prospects Bright For Dairy Farmer

Prospects look good for dairymen to keep high producing cows and herds to meet growing national dairy needs and to capitalize on potential profits says Francis Kutish extension farm economist Iowa State college and A W Rudnick Extension Service. He notes beef production has drawn some away from milk and warns that switching now may lead to disappointment as beef prices near their peak while dairy productivity supports more consumers. He cites eight cattle cycles since 1880 and urges not to discard quality producers while reminding dairymen of long term value of keeping herds. Rudnick adds liquid cash from regular cream checks aids farmers’ liquidity.
