Cattle on Feed Shifts Across Midwest and West in 1971
Release from Dale Shires notes Midwest feedlots lagging year earlier while Western and Southwestern herds rise. May 1 counts show six-state total at 7 million head, Iowa down 10 percent to 2 million. Nebraska down 7 percent to 1.2 million. Texas up 37 percent to 1.6 million. other states up 9 to 23 percent. Futrell cites corn price dynamics and drought-area culling as factors, with outlook for rebound as price relations improve. Beef supplies likely large enough to pressure prices, with Iowa Choice steers near 30–31 dollars in midsummer and October–December prices around 29 dollars per cwt.
