Community drills tested the tornado warning sirens with a 2 to 5 minute blast. Residents were advised to seek sturdy shelter when the warning sounds and await an all clear signal. Local reports note the sirens may require a brief pause after the alert before resuming.
Bremer county crews start seal coating on two east side roads with Everds Bros. Construction Co. moving in Monday. The project covers the Knittel to Tripoli segment and the Readlyn to Klinger road area near the Black Hawk county line. Traffic will not be re routed during work.
Bremer county Farm Bureau public relations committee and board will host a discussion on the new tax law at Tripoli Town Hall on Wednesday evening June 26. Iowa Farm Bureau Federation officials Glen Taylor Jerry Snethen and Harold Anderson will be present to conduct the meeting.
Caroline Kehe leaves Sunday for San Diego California to attend graduate school this summer at San Diego State College. In the fall she will begin duties as a business teacher in the San Diego city school system.
Tripoli Commercial Club members met with 25 attendees for a dinner. Final plans for the annual Harvest Festival on July 15 and 16 were outlined and will be announced later. A July 22 stag was scheduled. A color slide show highlighted Bremer County parks and attractions narrated by Herb Engelbrecht. A Hawkeye Technical Institute color film was also shown.
Matthew Lutheran Church Readlyn observes its 90th anniversary with two worship services on Sunday June 23. Pastors recount the church’s long history from early leaders Ludwig to Alfred and Conrad, the 1949 building, and corner stone ceremony for a new entrance. The day features a rededication at 10:00 a.m. and an afternoon observance at 2:15 p.m. Rev Arnold H Jahr of Livonia Mich delivers the morning sermon.
A 12 member jury panel from Bremer County is to meet at the Court House in Y on Monday July 1 at 1 30. A seven member grand jury will be selected from this panel to serve in August and September.
A Mason City Red Cross letter from the National Office thanks a donor for a contribution to tornado relief. It notes victims aided during the emergency period, shelter and medical care provided, and the ongoing effort to meet basic family needs through relief operations.
The fast-growing Detroit suburb congregation has over 650 members after less than five years of operation and has been self-supporting for two years. Rev. Homer Larsen of Nazareth Lutheran Church Cedar Falls will deliver the sermon. An anniversary booklet, detailing church history and group photos, will be available. Since 1878 the church records include 1,056 baptisms 311 marriages 796 confirmations and 354 funerals.

Bremer County Quality Pork Producers finalize plans for a pork barbecue at South park shelter Tripoli on Friday June 28 at 7 p m to serve as the association charter meeting. Roy Keppy famed swine producer from Davenport will speak with colored slides on his operation.
The Iowa Air Pollution Control Commission will hold a public hearing July 10 at 10 a m at the Waterloo Recreation Center to discuss open burning rules related to refuse disposal. Written statements are due by July 1 to the Des Moines office and hearings may limit oral time. Four additional July hearings will occur statewide with five commissioners present led by Chairman Carl D. Smith.
Caroline Kehe represented Iowa at the National Phi Beta Lambda convention in Washington D C in the Miss Future Business Teacher contest finishing fifth among about 30 contestants.
Sp5 Greg Schmidt departed Tuesday for Camp McAllan Alabama to be stationed after a 40 day leave spent with his wife and relatives. Mrs Schmidt and Patty Schmidt accompanied him and will return next week.
Jerry Martin departs Tuesday morning for Travis AFB California and will leave on June 20 for Vietnam. His family stays in Tripoli.
Scott Seelhammer, son of Mr and Mrs Wm Seelhammer, sustained a broken wrist after a fall while playing at South Park Friday evening.
Arnold Zander entered Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Saturday and underwent emergency surgery that afternoon according to an official hospital bulletin.
Bremer county Cancer Society met in the Welfare Offices with Mrs Nabors present. Officers elected for one year were Rev W D Weidler chairwoman, Mrs Harold Meier secretary, and Mrs Carl Ryan treasurer. Board members named for three years include Mrs Harold Meier and others from Frederika Tripoli Plainfield Waverly Tri poli Sumner.
Nineteen Bremer county dairymen earned Dairy Herd Improvement Association certificates for herds averaging over 450 pounds of butterfat per cow for May 1 1967 to April 30 1968. The Bremer total includes 29 herds with 1 020 cows, averaging 11 962 pounds of milk and 460 pounds of fat, above Iowa averages. Authorities note national DHIA totals and list Bremer recipients with farm locations and breeds.
The Good Will Society auxiliary of the Lutheran Children's Home in Waverly will meet Friday June 21 at 2 p m in the Dining Hall. Arthur Marck executive director of Lutheran Social Services will speak. Ladies interested in the Home or social welfare are invited.

Living memorials honor departed friends or loved ones for any cause, with contributions funding cancer control research education and service programs. The American Lutheran Church Women Iowa district hold their third triennial convention June 25 26 at G J Neumann Chapel Wartburg College Waverly. About twelve hundred delegates from 381 auxiliaries attend with keynote by Dr John W Bachman Wartburg president and speakers Carla Holtermann Irene Sagebiel and Arnold Johnson. Tours to Waverly Senior Citizen Center and Lutheran Children s Home planned and closing invitation to live led by Rev Herman W Diers and Rev Wayne Stumme.
Bremer county Farm Bureau women announce a public relations luncheon at the Riviera in Janesville on Thursday June 27 at noon for urban business women guests. Booth Vallentine director of TV and radio of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation will be the main speaker.
Grace Lutheran church women host an ice cream social and supper in the church parking lot starting at 5 PM with rain plan to move to the basement. Menu includes maidrites ham sandwiches potato salad chips cabbage salad baked beans pie cake ice cream Kool Aid and coffee. A band concert in the lot begins at 8 PM.

Tripoli girls' softball team won two of three games last week. They defeated West Union 6 to 5 and New Hampton 24 to 4 in five innings, but lost 15 to 14 to North Winneshiek. Maureen Frahm pitched all three outings. Coming games include June 24 at New Hampton and June 25 at Stormont, a doubleheader.
Iowa Highway Patrol license examining team served 68 persons in the morning session at Tripoli Town Hall. They issued 52 operator licenses 5 chauffeur licenses 2 instruction permits and 9 temporary driving permits. Team returns to Tripoli Town Hall on Saturday July 20.
Bremer County Supervisors approved four division bids for 1968 road rock totaling 99,142.50 dollars. The four divisions cover NW NE SW and SE county areas with bids from Hewitt Bros Inc Paul Niemann Construction and Concrete Materials Cedar Rapids. Grand total for 59,200 tons includes modified on road and crushed screened loaded classes.
Tripoli Red Sox routed Elma 9 1 on Sunday to notch their first victory after two losses. Dave Ray and Al Alcock each went 3 for 5 while Jim Krumm added 2 for 3 as the Sox built a 4 1 lead before finishing strong.
