Plans Announced to Improve Knittel Dead Year Ahead
County Engineer Dick Gish outlined highway upgrades from Tripoli south to Knittel planned for the coming year. The six mile route will be surfaced with crushed rock stabilized by Calcium Chloride amid local pressure to improve heavy traffic. A July 26 public meeting will cover grading Bremer north to Highway 188, with a 100 foot right of way and a 24 foot road, to be surfaced in autumn. A bridge east of the Siegel creamery needs approaches and work on about 13,000 yards of excavation and half a mile of road is slated for late month. Meanwhile culvert work west of Frederika progresses, replacing a failed one span with an 84 inch diameter pipe 64 feet long, and crews will repair approaches to the Plum Creek bridge near Frederika and Tripoli after recent washing out.

County Square Dance At Readlyn Sunday Evening

Costs of Iowa state hospital care push Bremer taxes higher
County Auditor Ed Knott reports pro rated costs for state institution patients in Bremer county have nearly doubled over five years. Monthly per patient rates rose from 52–60 at Independence to over 100, Oakdale T B sanitorium patients now around 230. Total 1950 costs were 25,761.94. for 1955 six month total already 26,307.02, projected about 52,600, a two mill rise meaning roughly $4 more per property owner.

Denver Centennial Parade Tops Small Town Celebration
Denver residents enjoyed a two day centennial festival with a Friday parade and a Saturday crowd of about 5 000. The event featured 60 entries including decorated floats old cars horses and the Denver High School band plus performances by the Waterloo Colored drum and bugle corps and air force members from a Radar base near Waverly. Bremer County Dairy Princess Jean Steege and attendant Faye Marley were crowned. Winners in kiddies and farmers contests were named in pet division character and fiction classes and greased pig and midget baseball events.

Summer Recreation Program Opens Monday in Tripoli
Registration for the Tripoli summer recreation program starts at 9 a.m. Monday at the high school, director John Mullen announced. All school age children may join free. attendance is voluntary. Mullen will supervise daily at the athletic field 9 to 12 and 1 to 5. Swimmers to New Hampton will not disrupt plans. Pee-wee and Midget baseball teams will play at Waverly Friday afternoon. Activities include croquet, volleyball, softball, art and crafts, and quiet games.
