A new billion dollar tax package signed by President Hoover goes into effect June 21 and July 1 and 6, targeting tires, tubes, sporting goods, furs, jewelry, radios, phonographs, cameras, appliances, soft drinks, candy, gum and amusement admissions. Postage rates rise July 6 with higher second class mail on July 1. Tax changes retroactive to Jan 1, 1932 include income and corporate levies, bank checks, safe boxes, wire and radio messages, and imports on crude oil and coal products. Tires taxed 20 cents per pound, inner tubes 4 cents per pound, and a 5 percent radio tax. Jewelry under $3 exempt. Automobile taxes range 2–3 percent on chassis, bodies, and cars, plus 2 percent on accessories.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at their hall Tuesday evening June 14 with eleven members present. President Mrs. W. H. Warner led the session. Treas. Mrs. B. F. Mors reported a net poppy sale of 27.85. a fourth sent to department welfare, the rest used locally. Delegates Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Claus reviewed the Sumner district conference held May 12. Plans for a Washington bicentennial program were discussed. July and August meetings were canceled. Hostesses served lunch after adjournment.
On Tuesday June 14, Mr. and Mrs. John Berlin Jr marked ten years of marriage with an at home evening gathering. Guests included his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Berlin Sr and Mrs. Chas Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Schmidt, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Koch. The evening featured card games and a lunch hosted by the couple.
Joe Sien opened a ten day clothing sale at nine this morning drawing a large crowd. He advertised with double page posters and big savings on all stock. Over three thousand sale notices were mailed regionwide.
The visiting Waverly team blanked Denver 4 to 0 on Sunday. Holman struck out 11 for Denver and Gambiana struck out five in five innings for Waverly. Elwood caught for Waverly and Bruns for Denver as Waverly collected six hits to Denver's one.
The Boeckmann family met for their annual reunion at Sumner park on Sunday June 12 with a large turnout. Attendees shared two bountiful repasts and voted to host next year's gathering in New Hampton with L C Schmidt elected chairman for arrangements. The event honored the memory of the late Mrs Boeckmann who was 83 on her last birthday.
Otto Schweibert sues Ed Minnaert for $50 and a writ of replevin to recover property. Also notes social visit as Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Moehling and son Paul of Denver visited Frank Koch and John Berlin Jr. families for Sunday afternoon and evening.
In Waverly Bremer county taxpayers league backed a graduating state income tax as a replacement tax at a mass meeting. About 175 attended. J Kendall Lynes, Plainfield Republican candidate, argued that 88 percent of state income comes from property taxes which yield only 25 percent of income. Mrs Perry Beck urged a sales tax as fairer, while the league backed possible road spending cuts to reduce taxes. P G Bloeser led the session. 500 to 600 county residents had signed the 29 resolutions from a May 16 meeting.
Catfish in the Wapsie are beginning to bite. Walt Fergeman, Izaak Walton member, brought in an eight pound 26 inch catfish Sunday evening. It was the day’s sole catch but noteworthy. Many others report good catches the past week as the season opened on bass and crappies. Local anglers expect better fishing this year due to high water levels.
The Readlyn gathering marked Mrs. E. Matthias' ninety fourth birthday with 275 to 300 attendees. An orchestra performed, Rev J Brandt gave the address, and a program featured songs, recitations, and a ball game. Directors elected included E C Stumme and Henry Warneke. Reunion set for Readlyn again in 1933.
The Fremont Cemetery association will meet for its regular meeting at the home of Mrs. H. W. Krueger Friday afternoon June 17 at 2 30. A good attendance is anticipated.
Canty hit a three bagger with one on as Nashua Cedar Valley league juggernaut defeated Fredericksburg 8 to 1 on Sunday. Schnor fanned nine for Fredericksburg while Wilson fanned seven for Nashua. Both teams collected six hits.
Ames Iowa June 13 more than 550 degrees were granted at Iowa State colleges sixty first annual commencement exercises at state gymnasium. President R M Hughes presented the degrees. A surprise party honored Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Luhring for their twenty fifth wedding anniversary at their home. Relatives and friends arrived at noon and brought baskets for a shared dinner. Rev. C. G. Gerlach gave a short talk before guests spent time visiting and a five o'clock supper was served.
Mrs. Mary E. Conley 76, longtime county seat resident, died Thursday in Minneapolis after a yearlong illness and pneumonia complicating cancer. She leaves two sons, Will and J. T. Conley, a grandson Claire Conley, and many relatives. Body returned for funeral at St Mary’s Church with Rev. Father Collins officiating. burial in St Mary’s Cemetery beside her husband. She was sister of the late Thomas Murphy. Several relatives from Waterloo, Manly, and nearby communities attended.
Miss Bertha Wilharm and Rev Harold Adix wed at St Pauls Lutheran church on Tuesday June 7 at 7 30 pm. The ceremony was conducted by Rev J F Adix of Guttenberg Iowa. Attendants were Erna Adix Wanda Wilharm and Paul Adix. A reception followed at the bride's parents home. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs H W Wilharm, graduated from Waverly High School Wartburg Normal College and worked at the county agent office and Waverly Publishing. The groom, son of Rev and Mrs J F Adix, is a Wartburg Normal College and St Olaf College graduate and Wartburg Theological Seminary graduate. They will reside in Farmersburg Iowa where he will serve as pastor of St Johns Church with installation set for June 19.
Miss Louise Harrison and Robert Herman were married Thursday morning June 2 at the Hampton Methodist church with Rev. A. H. Henke officiating. The couple, attended by Florence Webb and John McCreary, had a three course dinner at the bride’s parents’ home. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Harrison, is a 1927 Waverly High School graduate and a recent Iowa Teachers College alumna, now a junior high teacher at Manson. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Herman of Brookings, is a Brookings High and South Dakota State College graduate, with further study at Chicago Conservatory. They will reside in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where Herman directs band and orchestra work.
