A hail storm last Thursday afternoon damaged crops and fruit trees in Dayton Township. Large stones drove corn into the ground and stripped leaves from trees. Window panes were broken in several farm homes near Charles Zell William Ganske and Charles Krueger.
Alice Krueger and Alwin Maurer will present a fifteen minute broadcast on WMT Thursday June 15 from 5:45 to 6:00 p m Mrs W H Warner will accompany them at the piano.
Plans for reorganization are nearly finished as signed deposits totaling $13,000 are still needed to satisfy legal requirements. Depositors have signed in excess of the minimum, and completion hinges on obtaining the final agreements. Bank officials expect to reopen within days after meeting the deposit target, assuming paperwork and bookkeeping setups proceed, possibly by June 24 or the following week after securing Des Moines approval.
Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Eichmann hosted a Sunday party in honor of Mrs. Eichmann birthday and their daughter Janela Ann fourth birthday both on June 9. Afternoon guests included Dettmering family Bahe Schick Eichmann Lahman Fink and others. Evening attendees added Beisner Frese Dettmering Eichmann and Smeby Haugen. Games and late luncheon followed.
The Ladies Aid of St. Peter's Evangelical church will hold their annual picnic on Wednesday afternoon June 21 at Sumner park, concluding with a picnic supper. Afterward they will suspend meetings in July and August and resume in September.
Readlyn tops league as Plainfield defeats Tri poli 10 to 2 at Plainfield Sunday. Robert Smith pitched for Plainfield, Kasemeier lasted five innings for Tri poli, Vanderlinden closed. Notable hits include Noon Lyle Smith R Chester and Carl Smith with two bases while Kasemeier Sudol hit three baggers. A double play by Robert Smith Graham and Byron Smith highlighted the game.
Readlyn edged Nashua 11 to 10 in a hectic Cedar Valley league contest to seize the lead in the standings. Readlyn held advantages late, with both teams trading chances as the game stayed close throughout.
Bremer county supervisors approved signing agreements with depositors linked to bank reorganizations and authorized three 16 by 24 foot cottages at the county home to aid families in need. They also arranged a rock crusher purchase to improve roads and awarded a police radio contract to Frank Curtis for installation in the sheriff’s office.
Mr and Mrs Will Steinbron who live west of town on the Miss Fannie Guiney farm received a pleasant surprise Sunday from relatives marking a house warming after moving from Emmetsburg last winter. Guests included Herman Huegli and Elmer of the city, Ernest Steinbron and family of Waverly, Gottlieb Steinbron and family of Klinger, Carl Erhart and Albert Erhart and son Eugene of Westgate, Carl Steinbron and family east of Oelwein, Emil Kreb and sister Miss Kreb of Klinger. The gathering featured a meal and games with lively visiting.
Voters face a confusing ballot on June 20 as the form requires selecting a single mark for all candidates in a column. The ballot pairs candidates with ratification and opposition to repeal, naming Lee O. Peacock and W. H. Ray, and includes 99 blank lines for write‑ins. The attorney general ruled voters must vote their sentiment on adoption of the new amendment.
The county board of supervisors set June 19 as the letting date for a graveling contract covering 20% miles of county roads, under the 1933 road program. Work will be allocated by township: Franklin 1.5 miles Sumne 2 miles Maxfield 4 miles Jefferson 2 miles Jackson 1 mile Washington 1.75 miles Polk 3.5 miles Polk Douglas line 3 miles.
The Ladies Improvement Club announces a bake sale Saturday evening at the Rettig and Meier furniture store. A display of edible treats will be offered for purchase and the group invites everyone to browse and buy.
The tri-county event on Wednesday June 21 features all-Bremer county band under R V Leach, an address on the new deal in agriculture by M S Winder, 4 H sports, minstrel show, a noon picnic dinner, and a Cedar Valley league baseball game Plainfield vs Denver with free admission. Delegations from Chickasaw and Butler counties are expected to attend as crowds gather for a day of concerts races flag dedication and community celebration.
All Masons of the community are invited to a Masonic picnic at West Union on Tuesday June 20. Sponsored by the Rough Ashler club the event runs afternoon and evening at the fair grounds with a kittenball game and a dance. Picnic supper is served on the grounds at 5 30 p m.
The black bass season begins at 5 00 a m on June 15 under new fishing regulations effective May 15 Spirit Lake Clear Lake East and West Okoboji Lakes also open to all fishing from June 15 through November 30 except posted areas. Trout season closes at midnight September 1.
The fourth annual Drape family reunion was held Sunday June 11 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mattke with about 75 attending from Minneapolis Waterloo Denver Fredericksburg and Tripoli. Locally present were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Drape and daughter Dolores Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bunger Mr. and Mrs. Henry Drape and Florence Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bierman and Romaine Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Drape and Vernon Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buchholz and Raymond Mr. and Mrs. C Drape and sons Paul and Erwin and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Drape and children Kenneth LaVera and Verlon.
Louise Boeckmann 83 widow of Carl Boeckmann died Friday at 4 PM at her son in law and daughter's home after four months illness starting with influenza. Born October 10 1849 in Gertzhagen Germany she came to America 1869 and married Carl in 1869. Survived by daughter Mrs Louis Schmidt sister Mrs Minnie Moeller three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral at Schmidt home then St Peters Evangelical Church burial in church cemetery. Rev Theo Thomas officiated.
Community clubs in Sumner, Tripoli, and Waverly are pushing to obtain a share of Iowa's $10,000,000 road fund to pave highway 93 from Primary 59 to Sumner. Bremer county plans a bid for Bremer avenue, with a Des Moines visit set to press the project before Governor Clyde L. Herring and the highway commission. If Bremer county gets 1 percent, about $90,000 would be available.
Paving on Primary 59 at the county line is finished. The last cement batch was poured Wednesday morning completing the project begun last fall including Bremer and Chickasaw counties. The Chickasaw section was finished last fall and the new highway will open by Saturday July 1, though crews will continue shoulder work for several weeks.
Miss Emma List married Rev H Wendt at St Pauls Lutheran Church parsonage Sunday evening. The bride, long time resident and former milliner, and the groom, recently from Sterling Tl, will reside in this city after a brief wedding trip.
Mary Page of this city and Ervin Hilmer of Clarksville wed at Clarksville Lutheran church on Tuesday morning June 5. Rev. S G Becker officiated. Attendants were Edith Linn and Warner Hilmer. A reception followed at S H Page home. The bride, daughter of S H Page, is a nurse trained at St Josephs Mercy hospital. Hilmer is a Clarksville farmer. They plan to honeymoon in the west then reside on a Clarksville area farm.
Miss Ethel Stockdale of Hampton and George Gelder of this city united in marriage at the Little Brown church near Nashua Iowa on May 31 with Rev William Kent officiating. Attendants were Miss Alice Stockdale and Milo Allen. flower girls Geneva Stockdale and Grace Minor. The bride, daughter of A T and Mrs Stockdale, taught in Franklin county rural schools after graduating from Hampton High and State Teachers College. Gelder, a West Hatton England native, moved to America 15 years ago and cared for the local golf course. They plan a Chicago wedding trip and will reside in this city after returning.
Theodore Hoffman, a former resident, returned home and renewed an old feud with Fred Weidemann. In 1917 Hoffman and others allegedly sought to force Weidemann to kiss the American flag. Weidemann shot at them, crippling Hoffmann’s hand. Hoffman later assaulted Weidemann, was jailed for ten days, and vowed to leave town only to pursue his rival again.
August Nolte, 81, died at his home Sunday evening, June 11, after a three day illness from heart trouble and age related complications. He had resided in the city for many years, leaving behind family and neighbors who mourn his loss.
