Swimming program for youngsters starts next Tuesday

Youngsters from the Tripoli and Frederika communities may register this week for a six week swimming program sponsored by the Tri er American Red Cross. Enrollees must be seven or older and complete a signed enrollment form. Registration for Tripoli is at the Town Hall Saturday 2 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.. Frederika registration is during banking hours at Farmers Savings Bank this week.

Land 1500 Acres Assigned to Tripoli District by Board

Bremer County Board of Education assigned about 4509 additional acres to the Tripoli Community School district in a Monday night meeting. Parcels lie between two other districts and become part of Tripoli effective July 1. Plats include Leroy 1 through 3, Douglas 3 and 4, with multiple owners named such as Ohlenkdorf Zabel Griffin Van Brocklin Rochgton Bodermann Neuendorf Luhring Tegtmeier and Fennemann.

Readlyn Opens Saturday Night Band Concert Series

Readlyn launched the first of four 10 Saturday night concerts starting June 1 on Main Street at 8 p.m. Rehearsals occur Wednesdays. The Commercial Club sponsors the program directed by Haines Crosby, including band rehearsals private instrument instruction and concerts.

Annual Red Cross meeting in Tripoli held June 12

The Tripoli chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting at Town Hall on Wednesday June 12 starting at 8 p m. All members who contributed to the Red Cross or Tripoli Community Chest are urged to attend.

Ice Cream Social by VFW Auxiliary at Town Hall

The VFW Auxiliary will host an ice cream social during a band concert Tuesday evening June 18 at the Town Hall. Maidrites, ice cream, cake and coffee will be served. If needed, the social will be held at the VFW home.

Red Cross Chapter Annual Meeting at Town Hall Tonight

The Tripoli chapter of the American Red Cross invites members to the Town Hall tonight at g o'clock for the annual meeting. Geo. M. Lindsley, the chapter president, noted contributors to the Red Cross or Tripoli Community Chest are automatically members and eligible to attend and vote. Officers will be elected and the program for the next year planned.

Two More Blocks Of Curb And Gutter Added

The Town Council approves adding two more blocks to this year's curb and gutter program bringing the total to eight and a half blocks. One block runs east and west starting one block east of The Leader office and another runs north and south starting one block south and one block east of The Leader office. The additions connect with curb and gutter work on Main Street east side and with work one half block east of The Leader office. Cedar Valley Engineering Co. surveyors from Waverly conducted preliminary surveying this week to ensure proper drainage and street stability. Richard Hemingway, local attorney, has been engaged to prepare the legal documents for the project.

Readlyn Bus Driver Honored for 72,000 Miles Safe Driving

Mrs. Harold Fortsch of Readlyn, a school bus driver, received recognition from the State Department of Public Instruction for logging 72,000 miles with no property or personal injury accidents. In seven years she has missed her route only twice, and she has driven 32,000 miles in her family car without an accident.

School Board Opens Bids for New High School Project

Tripoli Community School district plans to open construction bids this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the school gym. Bids cover general construction plumbing heating and ventilating work and electrical wiring. Estimated cost not to exceed 410000.

Red Sox to Play Under Lights at Janesville Tuesday

Tripoli's Red Sox will get their first taste of night baseball next Tuesday when they travel to Janesville for a Cedar Valley league game at 8. They will not play Sunday as they try to rebound from a 12-6 loss to Readlyn last Sunday, which left them third in the race behind Readlyn, the league leader. Readlyn built a big eighth inning to pull away with 13 hits, including a solo homer by Chuck Lehmkuhl, as Tripoli managed nine hits and stranded runners in several innings.

Street Improvement On Block East of Leader Office Begun

A street widening and curb and gutter project by L. L. Moeller Construction Co. started last week on the half-block east of the Leader Office. New curbs on both sides and a later asphalt surface are planned. Work paused by bad weather earlier this week but may finish by week’s end. The half-block west of the Post Office was widened last Thursday and the new parking facilities are in use.

Fund Drive Near Half-Way Mark for New Resuscitator

Tripoli community fund drive to buy an automatic resuscitator reached $279 of a $600 goal. Fire Chief Howard Holm noted last week’s $43 brought total donations to the project. Contributions are collected at American Savings Bank Interstate Power Co and by fire department members with funds in a separate account for the resuscitator. The unit was shown at a Tuesday band concert and will be displayed again at Kid's Fish Day at Tot's Lake next Sunday with donations welcome.

Paul Fuchs Leads Parish Mission Training Trip

Paul Fuchs and 39 other Lutheran youths gathered in Michigan City Indiana for a week of training before leading 10 mission teams next week.
