Carl Marks Dies at Sumner After Long Illness
Funeral services were held for Carl Marks who died Friday after a long illness at age 68. He was born in Germany November 10 1865 and lived in Sumner where he operated a shoemaker business before retiring in 1933. He is survived by his widow Martha four children three sisters and six brothers.

Offringa Named Relief Director in Bremer County
County Agent D. D. Offringa is named director of the agricultural drouth relief service for Bremer County. He got the appointment by telegram from Washington and will receive program instructions soon. The county faces hay and grain shortages, with orders placed for several carloads of hay and an option on fifty carloads of alfalfa at up to 18.50 per ton f o b Bremer County. A possible freight-rate cut may reduce costs, and some hay may be financed for those in need. Sealed corn releases are possible at 47 cents per bushel, with payment arrangements at local banks or the Waverly office. Bremer County sealers Walter Thompson and Charles Colburn will handle releases and further information.

Mrs Muhlenhaupt’s 80th Birthday Family Reunion
The Muhlenhaupt family gathered Sunday at Mrs Minnie Muhlenhaupt’s home to celebrate her 80th birthday on June 3. Guests from Readlyn Waverly Hampton Dubuque Waterloo and Albert Lea joined three sons and seven daughters for lunch and a long afternoon of visiting. Mrs Muhlenhaupt, active at 80, lives alone in summer and with family in winter, has 88 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and recently recovered from a hip fracture.

Des Moines reports that application blanks for old age pensions have been sent to the state printing department and will be printed in a few days. Byron G. Allen, superintendent of the old age assistance commission, says the forms will reach county auditors around July 1 and distribution will be through counties only, not at state offices.

Amos Belknap Receives BA Degree at State Teachers College
Amos Belknap of this city earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls during the June 4 graduation exercises. He was among 288 graduates receiving degrees and diplomas as Dr C R Latham presided and delivered the commencement address. Belknap participated in events including the President's reception May 27 and the graduates dinner June 2.
