Readlyn defeated Fredericksburg 8 to 7 in Cedar Valley League play Sunday. Schnor yielded nine strikeouts for Fredericksburg, while Diekman fanned eight for Readlyn. The victory extends Readlyn’s winning streak to four with no defeats. Batteries: Diekman and Matthias for Readlyn. Schnor and Rourke for Fredericksburg.
Dunkerton trimmed the visitors 6 to 2 as Carnes had seven hits and Dunkerton ace Page caught. For Denver, Homan and Bruns formed the starting battery while Dunkerton produced 14 hits. Sunday games include Tripoli at Waverly Nashua at Dunkerton and Readlyn at Cedar Falls Cubs.
Mr and Mrs August Tonne hosted a birthday party at their southwest of town home on Sunday. Attending from the city were their parents Mr and Mrs F H Tegtmeier, Mr and Mrs Carl Tegtmeier, Mr and Mrs Rudolph Pieters and daughter Irma, Mr and Mrs Carl Drape and daughter Delores, and Mr and Mrs H L Haase. East of town were Mr and Mrs J A Koch and son Stanley plus neighbors and friends. Cards and visits followed by a midnight lunch.
Regular Saturday night band concerts by the Tripoli concert band will begin this coming Saturday night June 4 and continue through the summer. Tripoli boasts one of its largest bands in years and plans are underway to enlarge the band stand and improve acoustics for the lineup.
S J Service, formerly of Frederika and son-in-law of Mrs. Mary Henry, died suddenly May 21 in Glendale California. He was 73 or 74, survived by his widow and three children Otis of Oklahoma City and two daughters in Lincoln Nebraska, plus siblings and other relatives. The couple had planned a Whit tier visit with John Henry's family for the birthday celebration when he passed after lying down briefly.
Mrs Christena Lahman 84 slipped and fell from a step near Potter Siding Friday evening injuring her hip. The which doctor moved Mrs Fred Duecker to assist at the Lahman home this morning. Her daughter Mrs L C Bang from the city is with her mother.
The memorial service at St. John’s Lutheran church was well attended with strong representation from the American Legion and Auxiliary. J. J. Chadwick, the city’s last surviving G A R member, attended. Rev Hanff delivered an enlightening sermon and the service featured special music.
Sunday school at 9:00 AM and morning worship at 10:00 AM feature a sermon on Choosing Paths. Christian Endeavor at 8:00 PM discusses How Should We Pray led by Mrs. E F Byers. Choir practice Thursday 8:00 PM. Children Day Sunday morning June 12 and a special song festival Sunday evening June 12 by the choir. The church extends a welcome.
Sunday school starts at 9:00 with a German divine service at 10:00 led by Pastor A Hanff. Luther League meets Sunday at 7:30 PM, Ladies Aid gathers Thursday at Mrs George Sauerbrei s home. No junior choir practice. senior choir at 7:30 Thursday evening.
Fred Doepke west of town celebrated a May 30 birthday with relatives gathering at the Doepke home. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Will Knief and family from Readlyn, Mr. and Mrs. William Doepke from Denver, and local residents Mr. and Mrs. John Berlin senior and junior families, Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Kimbal and son Frank, and Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Crittenden and son James. An evening of cards and visiting led to a late luncheon.
Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Koehler aged 62 were held Sunday at St. John's Lutheran church in Sumner with Rev. C. J. Mardoff officiating. Burial followed in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. She is survived by her husband three daughters Mrs. Art Schulz Sumner Mrs. George Wittenberg and Mrs. Albert Wittenberg Hawk Eye and one son Edward Sumner. Also three sisters Mrs. Albert Koehler Sumner Mrs. Henry Luhring and Mrs. D Dettmer Tripoli.
Local social notes detail visits and illnesses in Tripoli and nearby towns. Mrs. Bert Buhr of Maxfield spent a week with her sister Mrs. Fred Duecker. various relatives from Nashua Fredericksburg Waterloo Readlyn Elgin and Newton visit. A birthday supper honors Mrs. Dohrman with many local guests.
The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seehase was observed at Sumner community park on Wednesday May 25. Rev H Kuhlman led a short service and grandchildren sang a hymn. Son and daughter lists and a Wartburg student spoke a poem of 26 verses. About 53 families attended in good weather. A grand cake decorated with gold sat at the center. The event honored a long partnership dating from their 1867 and 1875 ocean journeys, with both families present except one deceased daughter.
A large crowd braved a rain shower for Memorial day ceremonies in Tripoli. Only Civil War veteran John J. Chadwick attended, as the town marked the day with an opera house service led by Rev. E S Byers and a graveside observance at Fremont Cemetery with prayers, addresses, and music by the Tripoli band and brass quartet.
Ida E. Snelling and Francis W. Hale of this city were among 464 graduates receiving degrees at the Iowa State Teachers College June commencement exercises. The week included a president’s reception at Dr. O R Latham’s home, a dinner and party, and baccalaureate services. Graduation address by A H Upham of Miami University on "Gentleman and Scholar."
Announcement that G A Tjernagel D C chiropractor with 16 years experience will open an office at F W Hale's residence opposite the opera house on Tuesday June 7. Office hours are 1 to 5 p m on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Esther Frese and Edwin Joens wed at St. Pauls Lutheran Church on May 25 with Rev Theo Frese officiating. Attendants were Agnes Frese and Elmer Frese. They plan to settle on the Jerry Joens farm after a dinner at the Frese home. Esther is a Waverly High and Iowa State Teachers College graduate and has taught in Douglas township. Edwin is the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Joens and works on the family farm.
Mr and Mrs O Hardwig and son Robert traveled to Northfield Minnesota for the annual choir festival at St Olaf College where their daughter Miss Hertha is the choir soloist. Miss Hardwig has served as soloist with the renowned choir for a year and accompanied the group on a month long eastern southern tour this spring and on a Europe trip two years ago. She will graduate in June after completing a four year course.
Ormon Hood, 62, of between here and Clarksville, remains a Mercy hospital patient after a Rock Island freight train struck his auto at a crossing Thursday. He suffered a broken leg, fractured hip, several broken ribs, and severe head and body cuts with no internal injuries noted.
Rain and threatening weather moved the Memorial day observance to the high school auditorium where the large crowd attended. Col. Robbins of Cedar Rapids delivered a fine address as the G. A. R. was represented by three veterans: George Vanderwalker, Leroy Remington, and J. F. Grawe.
Mrs William H McCaffree aged 81 and one of Bremer County's earliest pioneers died at her son Howard McCaffree's home in Waverly Junction on Friday May 27 from old age and complications. Her husband died about two years earlier. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the McCaffree home.
Sister Minnie Kuethe longtime resident at the Lutheran Orphan's home in the city died at Passanant hospital Milwaukee on Friday May 27 after months of illness from a nervous breakdown She is survived by brothers Otto and Carl Kuethe and sister Mrs John Schwake Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at St Pauls Lutheran church Also note Carnation milk plant shipped twelve cars of milk in three days (Continued on page 8)
