The Tripoli town council proposed expenditures of 145 218 for the year starting 1969 and a 32 mill levy for general operations plus 2 mills for debt service. Hearing set for Aug 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Town Hall.
Bremer County Board of Supervisors set condemnation proceedings Friday July 26 for parcels in the northeast area needed for curves and road improvements. Parcels include 3.93 acres to Evan and Lorita Burke and 4.? acres to S F Mabel Joebgen, with two parcels totaling 12.71 acres for curves on local routes. A three-person jury will assess damages against Rohlin Construction Co. Plans call for August work on asphalt paving from Denver to the road, and from Janesville to Yer. Bremer County Farm Bureau Picnic set for Sunday 28 with fried chicken and ice cream for all ages.
Tripoli entered the Ball Tourney with a Sunday 11 AM win over Janesville before rain stopped play. Tonight Wednesday the teams Tripoli and Ly will meet in Denver to open the doubleheader, starting with the first game.
Rain in the Tripoli area Tuesday produced flash flooding with about two inches leading to rising manholes and basement flooding. Denver also recorded around four inches with the creek near Highway 63 flooding the road and prompting pumping efforts to relieve basements.
Funeral services for Mrs Geneva Kerr 45 were held at the Chapel of Memories West Waterloo. She died at home in Evansdale Saturday morning of a brain tumor. Burial was in the Garden of Memories. Geneva born Tripoli March 12 1923 daughter of Ernest and Emma Drewis. Survived by husband two sons Brian and Dennis daughter Linda and six sisters.
Pastor W. H. Lindquist of St. John's Lutheran Western Douglas will deliver his farewell sermon on Sunday July 28 at 10 a.m. He has led the congregation since November 1 1962 and will move July 31 with his wife and Lois to Kellogg to serve St Pauls Kellogg and St Andrews Elk Creek near Sully. A July 30 meeting will call a new pastor and Prof Ronald G Alexander of Wartburg College will supply the pulpit in the interim.
John Marlow of Waterloo and Mrs. Lee Harris of Evansdale are named with five brothers Roland Waverly Randolph Tripoli Ralph Sumner Erwin Readlyn and Frederick Plainfield and also one grandchild. She was preceded by one sister.
The Small Business Administration will open a temporary field office at 1028 Headford Ave in Waterloo to process disaster loan applications for victims in Black Hawk Bremer Buchanan Butler and nearby counties. The office runs July 24 from 8 am to 5 pm daily. Additional SBA offices remain in Oelwein and Charles City handling May tornado loans.
Sp. John A. Gitch, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis L. Gitch of Sumner, received the Army Commendation Medal while serving with the Fourth Infantry Division near Pleiku. He earned it as a rifleman in Company B, First Battalion, 12th Infantry. He entered the Army in February 1967, trained at Fort Bliss, and was stationed at Fort Polk before going overseas in July 1967. He is a Sumner High School graduate and has also received the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
A week from Monday through Saturday, homeowners and business owners who suffered losses to realty or personal property from the flood are urged to apply for relief under the disaster program.
The Iowa Highway Patrol license examining team served 53 people in the Tripoli Town Hall Saturday morning. They issued 39 operator licenses, 4 chauffeur licenses, 4 instruction permits and 6 temporary driving permits, plus 11 written tests and 9 driving tests. Costs were listed: operator 5 dollars, chauffeur 10 dollars, instruction permit 3 dollars, temporary permit 5 dollars, school license 5 dollars. The team will return to Tripoli Town Hall on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Six contestants entered the 1968 Bremer County Fair Queen contest with Janice DeVore of Plainfield the latest entrant. Other entrants include Gloria Eick of Waverly Kathleen Dewey of Waverly and Roberta Jean Chester of Plainfield plus earlier entrants Kathleen Frahm of Sumner and Mary Matthias of Readlyn.
Tripoli V F W Club will hold a steak and shrimp supper Friday July 26 from 6 00 to 8 00 p m Lawrence Heinemann club manager says members their spouses and the general public are invited to attend the event.
Aleda's Fashionere Beauty Shoppe will close for vacation from July 29 to August 1. The notice informs customers of the temporary shutdown and expected reopening.
Readlyn Town Council publishes budget estimates for 1969 calling for expenditures of 112,480 with an estimated 14,000 unencumbered balance and 66,950 in other income reducing the tax need to 31,530. The 34.51 mill rate funds 7,530 debt service and 24,000 for general operations. Taxable valuation is 913,477 with a hearing set for Aug 5 at 7:30 pm in Town Hall.
David Bremer of Minneapolis visited the Paul Bremer home from Thursday through Sunday and will depart Friday for Los Angeles to continue work with the same investment firm.
Mr and Mrs David Harken of Fullerton California are staying at the home of Mrs Harkens parents Mr and Mrs George Sauerbrei during their visit.
Local residents and relatives frequented Tripoli Nursing Home for visits with residents including Mary Brase Bertha Wallace Agnes Thran and Sophia Bock. Attendees included Leland Bergstrom Fern Rothmeyer A J Carstensen Ernest Carstensen John Hagenow and Joe Krueger among others.
A representative from the Social Security Administration will visit Waverly Court House on Aug 12 and 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. and Sumner City Hall on Aug 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. The Waterloo district office at 525 West 5th Street is available for contact.
About 175 Farm Bureau members from northeast Iowa attended a district meeting at the Sportsman Club in Oelwein on Tuesday July 16 chaired by district director K H Hoppenworth. State and national issues were discussed and a county resolutions opinionnaire will be developed for fall votes.
Decorah defeats Tripoli 2-0 in the Iowa boys sectional final at New Hampton. Tom Green pitched a one hitter for Decorah with 6 strikeouts, Barry Boeckmann drove in 3 via a bases loaded double, Wil lis Hildebrandt held the Panthers hitless in relief, while Dan Biesterfelt and Heinemann contributed key hits as Decorah advances as a sectional winner.
The Tripoli Jaycees will hold a regular meeting on Thursday July 25 at 8 00 p m in the VFW meeting room.
Registration for Denver junior and senior high students runs August 7 to 9 with specific dates per grade. High school office hours are 9 to 12 and 1 to 4. Book rent must be paid before books, bus routes operate on regular schedules, and kindergarten classes begin August 27 with a special parent-teacher session planned.
Tripoli Red Sox defeated Elma 4 2 at Elma to run their streak to five. Dave Ray earned the win allowing four scattered hits and keeping Elma scoreless until the ninth. Bob Koenen led Tripoli with a 3 for 4 day and Ray added a sixth inning hit.
St John’s Lutheran church in Maxfield hosts a lawn supper on Sunday July 28 with serving starting at 5 00. Menu includes beefburgers cheese sandwiches homemade beans pie cake ice cream coffee and Kool Aid.
Tripoli high school girls softball team finished 6 wins and 9 losses in sectional play last week after a 7 to 6 loss to West Union Gime. Coach Dave Van Ahn praised strong defense and improving play as the Panthers look to a fall season.
The Tripoli junior band and director Keith Van Bronkhorst will be on the Dr Max TV program on channel 2 Thursday at 4 00 p m The band taped the segment in Cedar Rapids on July 17 during a recent trip.
