Drouth Limits Wheat Surplus Relief Plan Discussed
Geoffrey Shepherd of Iowa State College says rising wheat prices do not lessen the need for acreage adjustments. Drought and lower yields threaten farmers with ruin, and fall benefit payments under the federal wheat adjustment plan will aid cash flow. Farmers will receive two thirds of benefits this fall based on domestic consumption of 1930–32 averages, with freedom to market this year’s crop. He cites three causes of low prices: weak global demand, tariff barriers, and larger postwar acreage. The permanent issues include continued foreign production growth and reduced U.S. demand as nations become self sufficient and seek to pay fewer debts.

Wheat Surplus Threatens U S Markets After War
The United States maintains expanded war acreage and buys American wheat while exporting nations stockpile wheat. World surplus on July 1 totals 776 million bushels, with 368 million in the United States, about three fourths of a year’s domestic needs. Even a small 1933 crop plus surplus could exceed a normal harvest, prompting calls for acreage control like the wheat adjustment plan to prevent future burdensome stocks.
