Thirteenth annual harvest festival events run Monday through Tuesday with kiddie rides drawing a free 26 inch bicycle, a Tuesday kiddie parade, a Tuesday flower show, and free acts by Royal United Shows led by The Cates Sisters. Contests include four parade prize divisions and a 20 division flower show with $128 in prizes plus a sweepstakes trophy.
Bromwell seeks the Republican nomination for senate and will visit Bremer on July 17 18 for a schedule of events. The day includes a 6 PM Meadow Country Club dinner in Sumner and a coffee break at various towns led by local hostesses. On July 18 trips include Waverly Tripoli and Plainfield with coffee and Rotary gatherings. Bromwell, a University of Iowa alumnus, has served in the U.S. House and is campaigning through Farm Bureau meetings and town hall events. Hospitalized individuals referenced attend local family duties and church activities are noted in the surrounding text.
The Bremer county treasurer publishes a semi annual report on page seven covering Jan 1 to May 31, 1968. It shows receipts of 2 954 355.40 and disbursements of 2 758 738.13 by funds.
Tripoli Cub Scout Pack 32 and families plan a picnic and softball game at Alcock park in Frederika on Monday July 22. Picnic supper starts at 7 30 PM with each family to bring own meal and table service. Only pop provided.
Mrs Betty Gambaiani replaces Mrs Marilyn Rosenau as executive secretary of the Bremer County Soldiers Relief effective July 1. The change reflects continued service to veterans and families in the county.
U S Army Specialist Five John F Risse 20 son of Mr and Mrs Wilbur C Risse rural Tripoli was assigned to the 264th Transportation Co in Vietnam as a stevedore.
The Hawk eye Institute of Technology serving multiple counties issues a budget showing total expenditures of 3 000 896 dollars for July 1 1968 through June 30 1969. Estimated unencumbered balance 873 600 dollars and income other than taxation 1 349 296 reduce the amount to be raised by taxation to 778 000. Taxable valuation in merged area VII for 1967 is 423 363 029. Public hearing on the budget set for Tuesday July 23 at 7 30 p m at the Airline and Highway 57 building Waterloo.
Faith United Church of Christ runs a refreshment stand at the Harvest Festival on July 15 and 16 to raise funds for the building project. Proceeds will support the church’s building fund.
Wendall Kuethe came home Saturday from St. Francis hospital in Waterloo after surgery there.
A public meeting at Tripoli Town Hall Friday July 12 at 7 30 discusses a disaster action plan. Speakers Al Miracle Black Hawk county civil defense director and James McNeilus Floyd county director share lessons from recent tornadoes in Oelwein and Charles City. A tornado film will be shown.
Tripoli varsity girls softball schedule changes as coach Dave Van Ahn notes. Tripoli will face the Fredericksburg West Union winner on July 17 at 8 30 p m at the Hawkeye tourney site, a game moved from July 16.
Mary Matthias of Readlyn is the second contestant in the Bremer County Fair Queen contest. She is a Readlyn Savings Bank sponsor, a Wapsie Valley graduate, and plans to enter UNI Cedar Falls. Active in basketball, National Honor Society, chorus, and music, she also serves as organist at Immanuel Lutheran Klinger and has worked detasseling corn and in local shops.
A proposed constitutional amendment asks whether the legislature should convene annually. It is one of five amendments on the November ballot for voters to decide.
Tripoli pitchers held Fredericksburg to one hit as the Red Sox cruised to an 11-0 win Sunday afternoon. Dave Ray earned the win with nine runs in the second inning highlighted by a three run homer. Dean Buhr and Dave Steege each had three hits for Tripoli. Upcoming games include New Hampton at Tripoli and Elmo at Fredericksburg.
Terri Nuss daughter of Mr and Mrs James Nuss attends EWALU Bible Camp in Strawberry Point this week representing Grace Lutheran.
The Tripoli Jaycees will sponsor a tractor pulling contest for area farmers on Sunday July 14 starting at 1 30 pm on East West Street from the Tripoli Feed and Livestock with a $200 purse. Four placings will be awarded per class with five dollar entry. Weigh ins Saturday 1 to 5 pm and Sunday 9 30 to 11 30 am at Tripoli Grain and Feed. A softball game between Jaycees and farmer entrants starts at 8 pm weather permitting.
Denver Community board of education completes faculty hires for the 1968-69 year except a guidance counselor. Aug 26 start. junior and senior high registrations Aug 7 8 9. New positions include librarian and extra sixth grade, physical education for girls, art program head Judith Plambeck, and Wartburg graduates among staff.
Farmers with 1967 corn, grain sorghum and soybeans stored under price support loans face key dates. The July 31 loan maturity can be extended to October 1 with written requests to the ASCS county office. Warehouse storage reseal options, transfer to warehouse loans, and extensions for prior year crops are outlined for eligible producers.
Helen Kreis of the University of Iowa joins a 50 member chorus for a sacred music concert at the Memorial Union on July 17 at 8:00 p.m. The event showcases student performers from the university.
Mr and Mrs Harold Rosenthal and Lila of Springfield Oregon were Friday overnight guests in the Edw Rosenthal home. They visited in the Ruben Buhr home Friday evening and the Rosenthals left Saturday for their Oregon home.
Norman E. Engle of Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Service received the Pioneer award from the AAACE at its Knoxville meeting. Engle, supervisor of college of agriculture radio television operations, produced over 600 half hour TV shows for WFBG TV and two educational stations reaching 38 counties.
Denver report says Christena A Oberman 91 died Wednesday at her daughter’s Readlyn home. Born in Eisenach Germany July 31 1876 she came to America in 1883 and lived near Andrew Bellevue before moving to Maquoketa. Funeral July 6 at St Matthew Lutheran Readlyn with Rev Paul Schaedig officiating burial Andrew. Survivors include daughter Erich Dornbusch two grandsons one great grandson. Funeral attendance noted and husband Henry W Oberman died 1950.
A Thursday evening visit at Tripoli Nursing Home saw Mr and Mrs Walter Meyne of Waverly and Mrs Otto Judisch of Spokane join Agnes Thran for a brief church service as flags from their church were brought along. Several other residents and visitors from nearby towns attended the gathering, sharing in fellowship and conversations.
Tripoli Panthers upset the Sumner Aces 4 1 in 12 innings after a 1 1 tie. Tom Green pitched nine innings. Willis Hildebrandt earned the win with relief. Paul Magnall led hitters with 3 for 5 while Steve Kerr added 2 for 5.
Mr and Mrs Carl Drape from Winter Park Florida visited relatives in Waterloo. They were Sunday dinner guests in the home of Mrs Elizabeth Buhr and later joined supper at the Kenneth Morgensen residence.
Machinist Mate Third Class Rodger A. Kirchhoff 22 of Sumner and Machinist Mate Second Class Arnold H. Jurgensen 26 of Sumner serve aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Oriskany undergoing overhaul at the San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard. The Oriskany and Carrier Air Wing 16 were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for Southeast Asia combat operations.
