The accord to settle debts and reparations after 1935 prompts Germany to issue 3 billion gold mark bonds at 90 with a 37 year maturity and 1 percent annual amortization. Wall Street reacts as bankers and politicians debate debt cancellation, disarmament, and prosperity prospects.
Tripoli Tigers top Fredericksburg 6 to 2 in a Cedar Valley league game marked by timely hitting and strong pitching. Krueger fanned 14 for Tripoli, Rollins struck out 11 for Fredericksburg, with one walk for Krueger and four for Rollins. Ducker hit a seventh inning homer for the Tigers, while E Mikes of Fredericksburg fractured a leg sliding into first. Score by innings: Tripoli 002 011 20. Fredericksburg 002 000 000.
Waverly defeated Nashua 4 to 3 in a Cedar Valley league game drawing a large crowd. Waverly moves into second place with five wins and two losses as Nashua slips. Batteries for Nashua were Wilson and Strike, while Rice and Elwell pitched for Waverly.
Readlyn extended its undefeated run with an 8 to 4 victory over Dunkerton on Sunday. Strumpel, Readlyn, and J Brasch led the hitting for Readlyn with key triples as the league leaders improve to eight straight wins and no defeats. Players Diekman Ferring for Readlyn and Carnes Page for Dunkerton pitched in the matchup. Upcoming Sunday games feature Tripoli at Readlyn, Denver at Waverly, and Nashua at Fredericksburg.
Two heavy rain and wind storms hit the community this week causing electrical damage to radio sets and church lights, burning fuses at St. Peter's Evangelical church and John Berlin Jr. home. A Saturday storm toppled trees, including a large one near the high school that was halted from falling on the junior high building, and another tree fell at the Rev Ph HilliGardt home.
The Dietrich Tonne descendants held their third annual reunion at Sumner park on Sunday July 10. A large gathering enjoyed a picnic program games and lunch. Attendees included Dietrichs children and numerous grandchildren and relatives from Tripoli Evanston Oelwein Hawk Eye Sumner Spring Fountain and beyond with Ben Moeller and August Tonne chosen as 1933 arrangement chairs.
J G Grawe publisher of the Bremer County Independent and the Waverly Democrat marked his eighty-ninth birthday on July 6. Despite age he remains at his desk daily, preparing copy and handling duties at the newspaper office in Iowa. He continues to look ahead in his lifelong career.
The Town of Tripoli plans a levy $2,380 less than last year with expenditures for 1983 estimated at $8,620. The town treasury had a balance of $8,419 on March 31, 1982, offsetting the reduced budget. Expenditures for 1931 were $9,784 and in 1980 were $9,993. Budget notice appears on another page.
Members of St. Peter’s Evangelical church gathered in the church basement for a farewell for Rev and Mrs Koehler and their children. Rev Ph Hilligardt and Rev Pfeiffer spoke, Koehler expressed thanks, the male choir sang, and W H Notdorf presented flowers. Refreshments followed served by a ladies committee.
H. A. Keding has resigned after 32 consecutive years as secretary of Le Roy School District No. 4. F. C. Buchholz was elected to succeed him. The district is located about two and a half miles northeast of Tripoli.
John L. Schnurstein, longtime carrier on rural route one out of Tripoli, retired after 28 years of service and now receives a government pension. A new act made rural carriers retirement permanent, prompting consolidation plans from two Routes into one. Postmaster Hale notes route changes as rural deliveries adjust to improved roads and efficiency.
The Sell family reunion gathered Sunday at Sumner park with about twenty five families from Waterloo Clarksville Tripoli Buck Creek Grove Hill and Sumner. The oldest attendee was Emma Keller aged 81 and the youngest was a five weeks old son of John and Mrs Knopleh of Buck Creek. Committee members were H H Schlichting Tripoli and Conrad Nolte Sumner. Next year’s committee includes Frederick Sell near Sumner and Alvin Nuss Grove Hill. This was the fifth annual reunion.
Friday July 8 marked the birthday of F A Robinson with a 7 o clock dinner hosted by his daughter Mrs Wayne Acken. Guests included Mr and Mrs Co W Acken Mandon Liebers Mr and Mrs F J Sager and daughter Rosella of Waverly. The evening was spent visiting.
Bremer County treasurer's semi annual report shows total expenditures and receipts for Jan 1 to June 30, 1932 at 752,738.48, a drop from 1931. Motor vehicle fees, gas tax receipts, road bond interest, and transfers all declined or shifted, while current tax totals and county balances changed, with end-of-period cash rising to 258,817.91 from 230,244.86.
A large attendance greeted the pageant Tides of India on the grounds west of St Peters Evangelical church last Thursday evening. Sponsored by the Young People’s League the event featured 160 participants, a built platform, Tripoli band music, and a cast including Rajah R J Bunger Tilak Wesley Bockhaus Dayal Millard Eichman Hari Orville Harmening Vetha Clifford Eichman Lilivati Esther Haase Zaria Marguerite Wiebrandt C J Kimbal Loraine Schwein Stanley Koch Ralph Drewis.
The Schellhorn residence hosted relatives Sunday in observance of Mrs. Schellhorn birthday on July 11. Attendees included Louis Waskow and family of Bremer Herman Pries E L Thiess Phyllis Pries John Kuhrt Estella Pries Kurt Fuchs Harold Nieman and more relatives from Waverly Crane Creek Bremer and nearby areas.
The Fremont cemetery association will hold its regular meeting Friday afternoon July 15 at 2 30 in the home of Mrs William Ambrose. All members are urged to be present.
Fred G. Clark Jr., longtime local barber shop manager and brother to Will Clark, died Sunday in Waterloo after a stroke. Born November 21, 1861 in Floyd, Iowa, he came to Waverly in 1883 and is survived by three sons Fred, James, and Romaine, plus a brother and sister. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 PM at the Kaiser funeral home with Masonic lodge involvement and burial in Harlington cemetery.
Mr and Mrs G A Grossmann celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Tuesday July 5 with a family dinner at St Pauls Lutheran church guild hall. Attending were A C Grossmann Wayne Wa verly Eugene Poppen Detroit Al vert Boer Bloomer Werner Grossmann Nevada Iowa H W Grossmann Charles City E L Hahn Des Plaines Hilda Grossmann Manhattan Kan Emma Grossmann summering at home. Married in 1882 in this city by Rev G Grossmann they have lived here since 1886 and since 1899. Mr Grossmann has been secretary of the Lutheran Mutual Aid Society and remains in that role. Both are seventy and in good health.
Little Delvin Lynch, year and a half old, drank gasoline left on the porch by his father. He was unconscious but revived after medical care and is now able to be about. Bremer County Independent publisher J. F. Grawe, 89, again at his desk July 6. Marshall Canning expands bean pack and hires over 75 workers as crop looks excellent.
A Sunday festival at the orphans home drew a smaller crowd than expected as a severe storm the night before blew down two large tents. Despite the weather, eating stands did brisk business and several hundred dollars were collected through donations and offerings. About ninety orphans remain on site.
