Fire gutted the Kuethe Livestock ice quarters in Horton on Friday night causing an estimated loss of 500. Plainfield and Waverly fire departments were summoned but could not save the structure. Wendall Kuethe, owner, had purchased the farm from Leonard Dettmer in 1961.

Iowans invested 10,459,789 in series E and H United States savings bonds during December, the highest monthly total since January. The 1962 state total reached 110,834,087, 74 percent of the year’s goal, with Bremer County sales at 782,922 or 59 percent. Hughes signals tax increases and liquor stance
Iowa Governor Harold Hughes, in his first news conference, said he may back a sales tax rise and will include tax increase recommendations in his budget message. He would not veto a sales tax if needed for funds and supports a withholding system for the state income tax. He also rejected introducing liquor by the drink via Democratic lawmakers, saying acceptable bills must include strong enforcement and licensing.
