Secretary Mellon calls for extra taxation to balance the budget, forecasting a $1.31 billion rise in 1932 revenue and 1.7 million new taxpayers. He also backs a sales tax as part of fiscal policy amid a broad bipartisan discussion of national finances.
Frederika high school boys and girls basketball teams prepare to face Alta Vista next Friday. The boys seek a fifth win in six starts while the girls remain undefeated, as both teams beat Sumner last week with the boys 17 to 14 and the girls 23 to 11. Eight or nine games remain, with Alta Vista Tripoli Plainfield Ion ia Sumner Arlington and Lawler on the schedule. Frederika brief notes include bake sale, family visits, and local events.
John Henry Mohling born 1856 near Maxfield Township, Iowa, married Sophia Koch in 1883 and farmed near Tripoli for 30 years before moving to Brighton Colorado. He died January 11, 1982 in Brighton after a period of illness. Survived by wife Sophia, two children Hulda Jahnke and Alfred Mohling, infant son Ewald preceded him. sister Mrs Frank Koch of Tripoli. Funeral held at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton with burial at Fort Morgan.
Des Moines reports show Iowa taxpayers to pay about 90 cents this year on farm and real estate taxes, with state and local officials seeking further expense cuts. Delinquent tax sales have slowed in some areas as counties and schools cope with reduced valuations and a looming 10 million dollar shortfall. The state committee on expense reduction weighs 21 reform questions while interim efforts echo the Elliott five cent tax cut legacy.
Readlyn Special reports the Readlyn Commercial club meeting for its annual gathering. A banquet at Joder Cafe preceded the business session. New members joined. The January term begins with State of Iowa v E N Ogbin on DWI charges. County Attorney Hagemann prosecutes. W H Wehrmacher defends. Judge M F Edwards presides. Several other cases follow including bastardy and disturbing the peace appeals, a juvenile commitment to Glenwood, support for six Lampe children, real estate partition, cemetery fund transfers, and guardianship final reports for Norman Baumgartner and Edward Buchholz along with estates of David M Husband.
Mr. and Mrs. William McCumber celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Waverly with open house and an Odd Fellows hall reception for friends. An entertainment piece tracing the bride’s life, a mock wedding and dance followed, with gold pieces and gifts presented. Weather kept some guests from attending.
The annual state debating series opens Thursday January 21 with local negative team meeting Strawberry Point and affirmative meeting in Waverly. Tripoli teams feature Sorg Shipp for affirmative and Brewer Bunger for negative with Rebholz and Kelsey as alternates. Judge Brindley from Iowa State Teachers College will oversee.
Morning worship at 11 with theme Christian Conflict and a vocal solo Swing Large Gates of Night by Glenn Byers. Bible School at 10, P S C E at 7 45 led by Mrs. Fred Klein. Choir rehearsal Friday 7 45 for Easter, large chorus of thirty to provide music next Sabbath. Members urged to attend, church filled to capacity last Sunday, welcoming gospel preaching and soul stirring music.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Spier marked her 80th birthday with family at Henry Spier's home last Wednesday January 18. All children attended plus Herman Lahman and family of Potter Siding, Will Spier, Pearl Walters and Fred Spier of Clarksville, and guests Keith Ferson and family. Fred Spier stayed on to visit a few days as health concerns linger.

Harry H. Hagemann announces his candidacy for renomination as County Attorney on the Democratic ticket in the June primary. He is now serving his second term and cites his past record and service to the county in seeking re election.
St John’s Lutheran announces Sunday school at 9 30 and divine service at 10 30 in German. The Ladies Aid meets Sunday afternoon at Mrs H H Nevermann’s home. Senior choir practice Thursday at 7. Junior choir practice this week.
Farmers Savings Bank of Frederika stockholders re-elected the same board of directors and officers at the annual meeting Tuesday afternoon. Directors: John Wendt C. E. Ladage William Boeckmann. Officers: C. W. Pennington president L. C. Hagedorn vice president Fred Rendt Jr. cashier G. F. Johnson assistant cashier.
Workmen have finished pouring concrete on the anchor pier of the new Mississippi river bridge at Marquette. They begin laying flooring on the Iowa side span and expect to complete it by the first of the month. A crushed rock fill will then be placed across the island to connect the span on the Wisconsin side.
At a meeting in Waverly last Friday afternoon the Bremer County Independent Sumner Gazette and Tripoli Leader were named as the official newspapers for Bremer County by the Board of Supervisors.
Miss Bertha Lewis, manager of Northwestern Bell, will leave Sunday January 31 for Minneapolis. Mrs E A Carstensen will become manager with Mrs Fred Ambrose as night operator. The Warnke family moves into the office as operations shift. Several relocations follow as staff changeover occurs.
Des Moines Iowa January 19 Dr J Arthur Myers of the University of Minnesota warns that every tuberculosis case stems from exposure. He credits milk pasteurization and eradicating bovine TB as key controls. The tuberculin test is reliable for detecting infection but does not show disease extent. animals reacting are slaughtered to remove danger.
In Oelwein Iowa Melvin Brinkman 24 died after a skating collision at Rocky Ford with John Zinzer around 8 pm Monday. Brinkman sustained chest abdomen and head injuries and died at Mercy hospital at 11 15. Officials said the crash was unavoidable with 35 spectators present.
Waverly veteran grocer W F Fritz died Thursday at 6 45 p m from heart trouble. He was 80 and had run a local grocery for 55 years. Surviving daughter Mrs Geo Starr Cedar Rapids. Masonic funeral held Sunday 230 p m Kaiser funeral home Rev Giles Rector and Rev C C Brandt officiating. Burial in Harlington cemetery. Also elected officers to the overly Community club for six months: President W F McDowell first vice president Leo Gorman second vice president William Wendt secretary treasurer Floyd Smith.
Ray Miller ex soldier 52 formerly of this place died from suffocation after being trapped in a basement when a stairway fire broke out. His father Hiram Miller survived from the area along with a stepmother and half brother, a daughter Arlene Miller training as a nurse in Minneapolis. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Koch's funeral home and he was buried in St Andrew's cemetery near Waverly.
Emil Seekatz of Waverly and Miss Hattie Tiedt of Maxfield township were married Sunday evening at St. Pauls Lutheran church by Rev. E. H. Rausch. Esther Westendorf of Waverly was bridesmaid with Harry Ti as best man. They will visit relatives near Readlyn and Waverly before housekeeping on the Fred Nolte farm south of Tripoli.
John Bartels of Plainfield pleaded guilty to assault and battery in a case filed by Lloyd Carpenter before E. A. Schiefelbein. He will appear for sentencing Monday at two o'clock.
The football team was honored at a Wednesday banquet in the high school building with Superintendent F. M. Clevenger as toastmaster and attorney Leonard Racker delivering the principal address on sportmanship. Other items include a birth, library circulation gains, spelling contest date, debate lineups, veterans meeting, visitors, and local business changes.
