Arthur Brisbane notes Mussolini’s pledge for a thirty hour week tied to a back to the land movement, predicting a better mood by mid‑1933. He cites economic signals such as rising rail incomes and building in November, while warning that Japan pushes into China and that returning Americans home could boost U.S. universities and beer advertising.
Peter Harvey, 61, longtime Sumner resident, died in Minneapolis Sunday. The body was shipped for burial. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. J. J. Costello officiating. Burial followed in Pinhook Cemetery. He leaves four brothers J. E. of Sumner J. L. and Frank in North Dakota B. M. in Minneapolis and two sisters Rose Harvey of Minneapolis and Ann Harvey of Omaha.
News reaches relatives of Cecil Farrand’s death in Tacoma Washington on January 12. He was born October 6 1881 near Cassville. He died from a heart attack after hip fracture and had been bedbound since November 24. He married twice. first wife Norma McMeekin died in 1918. Survived by second wife Fay Huff and two daughters Lois and Barbara, his mother Vida Farrand three brothers Cyril Bert Roy and one sister Mrs Guy Atbaugh.
Rev. Fred Schedtler marked fifty years in the Lutheran ministry with a Sunday observance at St. John's Lutheran church. Ministers and representatives from Buck Creek Westgate Eldorado and Bennington townships attended, with Rev. Carl Werner delivering a congratulatory sermon. Guests included Rev. G. G. Hergstraesser of Avoca Neb and longtime friends, while Women’s Circle members provided refreshments and Prof. A A Guetzlaff presided as toastmaster with a lineup of speakers from Wartburg College and area churches.
Mrs A H Bany suffered a broken collar bone and dislocated left shoulder Friday evening when she slipped while emptying dish water outdoors. Granddaughter Betty Bergman summoned help from the Wm Bierman home. Dr Stegeman reduced the fracture and she is reported as doing as well as can be expected. Daughters Mrs Arthur Schultz of Buck Creek and Mrs Walter Reding of Leroy township visited during the incident.
Oscar Bang lost the end of his left thumb while operating a buzz saw at a timbering job with Herman Gebert and George Crittenden. He was returned to town, the wound dressed by a physician. The injury is not serious but painful and will keep him from work for a short time.
Uniform county teachers examinations will be given at the office of the county superintendent on January 25 26 and 27 beginning at 8 30 each morning Mildred E Smith County Superintendent
The Spring Fountain creamery produced 121,614 pounds of butter in 1932 with 8,235 sold to patrons and 115,479 shipped to Philadelphia. It received 209,008 pounds cream and 1,186,073 pounds milk, with butterfat totaling 98,095 pounds. Patrons were paid 20,614.19 for butterfat and total business was 25,038.12, down from 32,587.13 a year earlier. Average test 27.57, monthly price 21 cents. Running expenses and improvements 4,423.93. Officers: Albert Volker president, Theodore Stahlhut and William Zell directors, Ford Meyer secretary. The firm has existed nearly 50 years.
The Royal Neighbors of Bremer County will meet in an all day session Tuesday January 24 at the Legion hall starting 10 a.m. A picnic dinner is planned at noon. Guests include Florence Bridges Mapleton state supervisor and Pearl King district deputy Delewin who will conduct a pep meeting and school of instruction. All county camp members are invited.
A group gathered at Mr and Mrs Joe Snelling's home southeast of town on Saturday evening January 14 to commemorate Lawrence Snelling's 21st birthday. Guests enjoyed cards and music, with a late lunch served by Mrs Snelling and her daughter Ida. Lawrence received several gifts.
Mrs and Mrs Wayne Acken and F A Robinson hosted a 1:00 o clock Sunday dinner for Mr and Mrs Thomas Alcock and daughter Miss Blanch of Frederika and Mr and Mrs C L McCumber of here.
Charles H. Hastings 75 pioneer resident of Bremer County died January 12 at his Waverly home after a throat illness. Born March 24, 1857 in Richland Center Wisconsin he moved to Polk township as an infant and later to Waverly. He married Ellen Williams February 28, 1933 and would have celebrated their Golden Anniversary. Survived by wife daughter Mrs J F Brechner a foster son in the Hastings home one brother Clerk Hastings Verndale Minn one sister Mrs Dora Farr Rochester Minn and two grandchildren Ellen and Jane Brechner. Funeral at Kaiser chapel with Rev Herbert Temple prior to burial at Harlington cemetery. Pallbearers W H Wehrmacher F H Munger W H Babcock John Cunningham W C Schlaberg.
Frank Anderson, long practicing veterinary work in Cedar Falls, has left for Newark New Jersey where he accepted a meat inspector job in a large packing plant. He earned the civil service appointment from the Bureau of Animal Industry after taking an exam earlier, ranking 11th among 800 examinees.
A large gathering honored Carl Drape on Sunday at his home with relatives from the area attending a 12:30 dinner and 5:30 supper. Guests included the Bunger, Koch, Haase, Tegtmeier, Pisgors, Buhr, Johnson, Henning, Haase, Dohrman, Eichmann, and Drape families among others, who enjoyed cards and visiting.
Henry Hankner reports this year’s ice packing will finish this week with 500 tons stored. He says the quality equals the best years in a long time and the ice is thick with little crust. Ideal conditions prevailed during the packing period.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a benefit card party at their hall on Monday evening January 28. Admission is a package of cigarettes, to be sent to veterans hospitals in Knoxville and Marshalltown. A blanket and hot dish holders sold by junior auxiliary members will also be given away.
A special meeting of Artesian Creamery Co patrons will be held at the creamery on Wednesday January 25 1983 at 1 pm to hire a buttermaker. Bids must be filed by January 20. Contact Albert Thieman Route 8 Waverly Iowa. The creamery is four miles north of Denver on Primary 59.
Leonard J. Smith longtime Bremer and Bremer county landowner died at his Tripoli home Sunday January 15 at six p m from a heart attack and illness surrounding old age. Born February 10 1845 in Rehoboth Mass he moved to Manteno Illinois at age twelve and later farmed dairy entrepre neurship. He married Isabel Gilkerson February 10 1868 and had eleven children. Survived by widow aged 84 two sons four daughters 17 grandchildren 22 great grandchildren and a brother. Funeral held Congregational church Manteno burial Manteno Illinois.
Mr and Mrs Christ Brockman long time Readlyn residents celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary next Wednesday January 25. A 12 o clock family dinner follows with open house in the afternoon and evening inviting friends neighbors and relatives to call between 2 and 4 pm or 7 and 9 pm.
Frederika Special Mrs J C OConnell died Sunday at 2 00 pm at the home of neighbors while visiting. She had suffered heart trouble for years and death was due to that ailment. Funeral services were held at the neighbors home at 1 00 pm and at the Methodist church at 2 00 pm with Rev A W Gable officiating. Mrs Henry Meswarth of Buck Creek called on Rev and Mrs Ph Hilligardt last Thursday evening.

W H Babcock won a contract to supply 13 000 tons of ice for the Chicago Great Western railroad. Ice will be cut from Cedar river and loaded on about 400 cars for shipment to Oelwein. Weather has hindered past three years, and the contractor doubts what the season will bring.
Miss Penelope Clary suffered injuries last Tuesday evening when knocked to the sidewalk by a boy on a bicycle near Waverly Lumber company. Mayor Osincup orders strict enforcement of existing sidewalk riding ban due to recurring complaints about boys cycling on sidewalks.
Mrs Louisa Kohagen of Bremer county marked her ninety fourth birthday last Monday. Friends visited to congratulate her while a family dinner was held Monday evening. Bedridden for eight months, she remains cheerful and is cared for by her daughter Mrs Laura Thies.
