A special meeting of the patrons of Artesian Creamery Co will be held at the creamery on Wednesday January 25 1933 at 1 oclock to hire a buttermaker. Bids must be filed by January 20. Contact Albert Thieman Route 8 Waverly Iowa. The creamery lies four miles north of Denver on Primary 69.
The American Legion Auxiliary held its regular meeting at the Legion hall Tuesday evening January 10 with second vice president Mrs. Fred Ambrose presiding. Fifteen members attended. Actions included approving Christmas box bills, reporting $8.93 from Christmas health seals, half retained locally for welfare and half sent to Miss Meta Luesenhop, county chair of seals, discussing a magazine subscription sale of $6.40, planning a benefit party, and sending one package of cigarettes to veterans at Knoxville hospital. Junior members sell hot dish holders with a chance to win a blanket donated by Legion members. A motion ordered 400 poppies before February 1 to earn a citation. Meeting adjourned until February 14 with luncheon hosted by Mrs. H. H. Bull, Mrs. A. F. Eichmann, and Miss Cassie Crittenden.
The Farmers Savings Bank Frederika held its annual stockholders meeting on Tuesday January 10. Directors elected for 1933 were C W Pennington L C Hagedorn John Wendt C E Ladage and Wm Boeckmann with Pennington as president and L C Hagedorn as vice president Fred Rewoldt Jr named cashier G F Johnson assistant cashier and Adele W Rewoldt teller. The bank reported gains in surplus undivided profits and reserve accounts.
The marriage of Laverne Goodenbour and Alma Redies occurred at St. John's Lutheran parsonage on Wednesday January 4 at 7 p.m. Rev. E. A. Hanff officiated. Witnesses were Clarence Goodenbour and Esther Redies. The groom is Conrad Goodenbour's son. the bride is Ernest Redies's daughter. They will live with the groom's father.
The Congregational church Ladies Aid met January 5 with officers reelected: W. H. Krull president, W. Ambrose vice president, F. A. Rehholz secretary, A. A. Belknap treasurer. A picnic supper followed. St Johns Lutheran and St Peters Evangelical also held regular meetings and elected officers for the coming year.
William Biemann and Irene Duecker of Frederika were married Saturday at 5 pm in Williamstown Iowa by Justice of the Peace Theodore Leach. Attendants Irene Schroeder and Robert Edgar. They will begin housekeeping March 1 at the D. L. Bowers farm near Frederika.
Fannie Gannon of the Extension Service at Ames will lead a training demonstration on home grown food use and meal planning at the Legion hall in Tripoli. The session on Friday January 17 at 1 30 p m covers cost of living, minimum food budgets, and methods for preparing home grown wheat and corn for family meals. Leaders from churches PTA welfare Legion Auxiliary Women’s clubs and farm bureau women are urged to attend.
A burglar threatened Mrs. Mirick at the G. C. Mirick farm home northwest of Sumner and demanded 25 dollars. The Mirick police dog Chief attacked the intruder, who fled in shredded clothing with Chief in pursuit. Neighbors report a car sped away from the scene. the robber was bitten and no clues have been found. Petty thefts and property losses are noted locally.
Waverly special report Dorothy Bowles fourteen died at Mercy hospital Monday noon after being accidentally shot by playmate Kenneth Frost sixteen. Bullet hit stomach and lodged near two vertebrae leaving her paralyzed until death. Doctors failed to remove it. Parents donated a blood transfusion. funeral Thursday 1 30 pm at Kaiser funeral home with Rev H D Temple officiating at Harlington Cemetery.
The grand jury reported and was excused for the term. Several cases were dismissed or defendants discharged, including State v Hirsch and State v Rausch. others were concluded or continued. W. H. Tegtmeier suit dismissed. estate and guardianship matters closed. J A Roffler will probate. executor H C Nolting named. Judge Beardsmore presided in place of Judge Edwards. No trial work occurred. jurors excused subject to call.
Ladies of Fremont and Frederika townships will meet at the Legion hall Friday at 10 00 a m Miss Fannie Buchanan will lead the training school.
Mrs Sophie Weihe aged 90 was buried Tuesday after funeral services at Buck Creek Lutheran church. A native of Germany, she came to America in 1868 and lived 55 years on the same Dayton township farm where her husband died in 1929. She leaves six daughters and two sons. another daughter died in 1931.
J H Mc Donald rents his store building in Frederika to Ernest Pries of Sumner. Pries will stock groceries and operate a produce house with Clarence Kretschmar of Sumner as manager. Pries will not relocate his Sumner mercantile and produce business.
Grant Krieger, aged resident of this city, died suddenly last Monday night due to a heart attack at the home of John Remley where he had lived for thirteen years. He was unmarried and survived by three sisters and two brothers in Plainfield and nearby towns. Funeral services were held at Koch funeral home and Plainfield Baptist church with burial in Plainfield cemetery.
Norman Beebe sixteen son of Mr and Mrs Martel Beebe sustained a bad fracture of his leg above the knee and other cuts when Edna Harmening lost control of a car on Rock Island street and struck a telephone pole. He was taken to Mercy hospital where the fracture was set and a cast applied.
Sheriff F A Sager lists 24 prisoners served in Bremer county jail during 1932. Two men were sent to Anamosa reformatory for robbery. Eight were committed to Independence state hospital for the insane. Four to the Independence inebriate department. One to the Woodward feeble minded institution.
Thieves entered the Harringtons home area near the fair grounds Saturday evening and carried away about 20 pounds of hamburger from a dishpan a ten gallon jar of pork pieces and a five gallon can of gasoline from an unlocked garage.
The attorney Raecker ill Leonard Raecker has been critically ill with the flu for a week and was taken to Mercy hospital Saturday afternoon amid threats of pneumonia. He is reported seriously ill.
Waverly notes the farm owned by Peter Humphrey between here and Horton was destroyed by fire last Friday. The blaze started in the roof and the upstairs was lost. A new house will be built when weather allows. J G Sanders traveled to Waterloo to attend Eva Jones’s funeral. Sister Mary Pierre and Sister Mary Claudina of Chicago and Miss Florence Flinn of Mason City were guests at local homes. Will Kaiser Lydia Gehring and relatives traveled to Peru Illinois for their uncle Giesler’s death. Jean Bushnell’s illness with flu and possible pneumonia improves. Esther Harmon will visit Davenport for the winter with daughter A C Marks. Olinda Krumweide of Chicago visiting over Christmas.
