Governor-elect Hughes Outlines Broad Iowa Plan at Cedar Rapids Dinner
Governor-elect Harold Hughes declared a full program rather than headline fixes like liquor by the glass. He pledged fair law enforcement, fiscally responsible government, strong education, local tax relief, highway progress, economic development, and support for the mentally ill, aging, handicapped, and needy, with conservation aligned to state needs. He said state agents will enforce liquor laws immediately after January 17 unless local dry conditions change, and he favors allowing liquor by the glass.

PERT POINTERS on towel care and selection
Advice in this era column promotes replenishing towels and balancing supply for each person. It highlights six towels per person, notes automatic machines reduce needs, stresses rotating to even wear, and advises checking weave density, loop depth, and absorbency by feel and light.
Quality towels and laundering tips for best use
Good quality should have dense loops which completely cover the underweave. Manufactors have several quality grades in their line. If you're sending your laundry out perhaps the lighter weight tower will be less expensive to launder and easier to handle in home washings. Check the selvage of the towel as it gets the hardest wear. A good towel has extra threads in the selvage. One side of lower quality towels is quite often lock stitched or hemmend. Decorative hands on most towels don't pucker as they once did. However, all towels shrink moderately in laundering because of the loose construction of yarns. Check the label for colorfast ness. Some colors have more seepage than others, but high quality towels hold their color best. When buying select the best quality you can afford for the intended use of the towel.
Crowded Conditions Revealed at State Training Schools
State training schools face overcrowding with 286 boys at Eldora for 260 capacity and Mitchellville girls at full capacity. Ben Baer notes 30 percent of Eldora boys and 40 percent of Mitchellville girls should not return home. The board of control considers creating group homes housing five to eight youths, supervised by a couple, funded by the state. Texas also leads in sulphur production at about 80 percent.
