Burglars Break Into Ambrose Station Early Thursday

Burglars forced entry into the N. R. Ambrose Oil Co. station early last Thursday and stole about 16 dollars from the cash register after breaking a back window and prying it open. The night watchman across the highway saw a car leave around 4 30 a.m. Similar break ins were reported that night at Frederika Mill and other towns northwest of there.

VFW Auxiliary Plans Open House at New Home

VFW Auxiliary met at the VFW home with Mrs. Caroline Schnurstein hosting. Reports covered Americanism and Membership while a talent show recap was given. Members approved donations for chimes and a gift for the national president, and voted to furnish curtains. New members Clara Towne Donna Sassman and Marlys Ryan were initiated. Plans for the March 6 open house were discussed.

Bremer County Plans Road Treatment South of Tripoli

Bremer county plans to treat 15 miles of roads this year with a chemical stabilizer. Richard Gish county engineer says the six miles south from Tripoli to Knittel will be the first step toward a blacktop surface with subsequent treatments to build a base before oiling. Other roads in the program include Horton road north of Waverly and the trunk road east of Janesville.

Frederika High One Act Earns Superior in Preliminary

Frederika high school’s one act play The Finger of God received a superior rating in the preliminary speech contest at West Union last Friday. Cast members included Harlan Duenow Sondra Dirksen and David Hagedorn. Illness Strikes Infant in Iowa City Case of Meningitis

Soldier to be discharged after 19 months in Germany

Cpl. Stephen A. Maurer phoned his parents from Fort Sheridan Illinois Monday evening. He had arrived in New York Friday from Mannheim Germany where he had been stationed the past 19 months. He expects to receive his discharge at the end of the week.

Mild Week Beats Blizzard Threat in Tripoli Area

Tripoli and nearby towns enjoyed a relatively mild week with above freezing temps and light rain. A winter blizzard veered north toward Minnesota and Canada, leaving blocked roads and several accidents. Temperatures ranged from seven above to 44, with about 0.40 inch of rain Friday through Sunday and fog on Saturday night.

Car Collision in Bremer Causes 400 Damage

An accident in Bremer last week caused about 400 in property damage with no injuries. Norman F. Nuss of Waverly and a wagon loaded with corn driven by William Kallenbach collided at an intersection on icy roads. Each vehicle sustained roughly 200 in damage. Nuss was fined 10 for failing to stop at a stop sign.

G R Rettig was elected president for 1955 56 at the Tripoli Commercial Club annual meeting at Town Hall. New vice president Dr W G Goevel and directors include Robert Ambrose R J Bunger Clarence Meier Gordon Niemeyer and Erwin Towne. A study committee on school reorganization was formed with Dr L J Magnall and Elmer Wilharm named as representatives. The group discussed promoting plans with at least 40 participants, while the secretary’s balance stood at 276.27. A by law change to create separate secretary and treasurer posts was approved.

Tripoli Man Aids Tachens Island Evacuation Aboard USS Washburn

Robert D. Sievers of Tripoli described his role in the Tachens Islands evacuation near Formosa. He said the mission involved unloading 5,000 tons of ammo and about 1,500 Chinese troops, with 50 hours aboard a small boat and six hours sleep en route to Formosa.
