The groundhog’s forecast suggests warmer weather to come after a sunlit Tuesday. With the thermometer at eight below this morning, forecasters warn of more cold but indicate winter may be near its end if the animal stays out of its hole for the next six weeks.
A new cash lease plan uses an Iowa farm product index to adjust rents annually. Based on product prices, rents would be about 8 dollars per acre at index 150 and about 5.25 dollars per acre when index is 100, with variations by soil fertility, improvements, and location. Millard Peck announced the concept on WOT radio as part of a farmers economics series.
Washington reports the Reconstruction Finance Corporation began official operation after the president and two directors took oath. C. G. Dawes serves as president, with Jesse Jones and Harvey Couch as directors. Loans will start immediately and focus on real estate, banks with frozen assets, and railroads in trouble. The treasury provides 300 million dollars to begin, with 200 million more as needed. Loans will be secured by collateral based on intrinsic value and long-term investments allowed.
A large gathering at the Henry Redies home Sunday evening celebrated his birthday anniversary. Attendees included the Ernest Kueker, Art Kueker, Ed Lange, Fred Heine, John Wendt families, Ernest Redies and relatives, Theodore Hooper, Esther Struck, Lavern Goodenbour, and the Lohmann and Lobenmann households from Chickasaw county. The event featured games, visiting, and a supper prepared by Mrs. Redies.
A farewell party for Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Eichmann was held Wednesday evening at St. Peter's Evangelical church basement hosted by the Ladies' Aid and husbands. About 50 attended as Rev. Koehler offered best wishes for their move to Minneapolis, followed by singing, games, guessing contests, and refreshments.
Martha Hinkley Simmons 72 7 20 of Waterloo died January 20 1932 after long illness. Born Cherry Valley Illinois 1859 she married George Simmons 1882 and had six children. Funeral services were held at Waterloo and Frederika with interment in Alcock Cemetery. Survived by husband five daughters five grandsons four granddaughters and one brother.
A Bremer county jury found V. Quincy not entitled to damages from Otto Richman and Emma Hesse after an auto collision near Waterloo on June 5 1931. Quincy sought 5000 for permanent injuries and property damage. The grand jury also began sessions on matters related to the closed Tripoli bank. Judge Edwards ordered alimony adjustments in Lease v Lease and fees of 292.06 were allowed for J W White's legal work in bank case proceedings.
Readlyn Special reports WM. Judas manager of Spahn and Rose Lumber dislocated shoulder and bruises when his car skidded on icy No 10 near the L H Brandt farm. He was treated at Osnes hospital and at home. Headon collision near Denver involved Mr and Mrs Wm Albrecht and Mr and Mrs August Boedeker with rib injuries and bruises. all recovering at the Albrecht home.

Francis A. Flood renowned traveler and writer will give an illustrated lecture on his journeys through the South Seas Australia and Borneo at the Waverly Legion hall on Tuesday February 1. The Bremer county 4-H clubs sponsor the event with tickets required due to limited seating.
Henry Hankner, Tri poli Sumner ice dealer, shows optimism only after a cold wave. Despite five to six inches of ice from recent freezing, harvests need 12 to 14 inches of ice. Many areas may rely on artificial ice as natural supplies dwindle while the Wapsie river remains open.
Elkader high school debaters meet the local team at Congregational church on Thursday evening. Elkader affirmative faces Oliver Brewer and Raymond Bunger over the compulsory unemployment insurance issue. Tripoli high school teams also debate Waukon that night, aiming for sectional honors after early wins.
Readlyn special minstrel performance by the town band drew a large crowd despite weather. The junior band, about 50 members, organized last spring, has shown strong progress. R. V. Leach of Waverly will return as director for the coming year.
Lucinda Thoms married Elmer Heinemann in a January 28 ceremony at Klinger Lutheran church. Rev. Louis Yockey officiated as orchid blue and white decor graced church and home. Attendants were Erna Thoms Renetta Otto Raymond Thoms and Lester Weber witness lineup. Guests came from Waverly Sumner Klinger and Fairbank. The couple's parents are Herman and Mrs Otto Thoms and H W Heinemann.
Band instruments valued at 500 dollars were stolen along with R. V. Leach’s auto after a garage entry break in Monday night. The theft occurred after 11:30 p m and before opening time Tuesday. Leach, Waverly bandmaster, had parked the car at Hillman Commercial Garage following a Legion meeting. A rear door lock was filed to gain access. Reiley Cancels Address Oliver Reiley Red Oak unable to address a Legion meeting. Dr M C Martin, Third District Legion highway safety chairman, substituted. Mrs R B Akin chaired the combined Legion and auxiliary meeting program with vocal by Mrs F A Halloway violin by Frank Sturdevant and accordion by George Mohr.
In Nashua 95 pupils and two teachers were absent Monday due to influenza, with Miss Alice Dixon and Miss Bertha Coffman among the missing. Jesup consolidated school also closed after 60 cases, canceling a basketball game with Winthrop and delaying two one act plays, Cabbages and Elmer.
Mr and Mrs F F Harmening were surprised at their home Sunday evening for his 82nd birthday. Old time songs and cards followed by midnight lunch. A granddaughter provided a decorated angel food cake as guests included Otto Boeckman Henry Detterding Grandmother Peters Ernest Judisch Leona and Victor Kelsey.
The Congregational church choir under Rev. Byers has begun rehearsals for the Easter cantata Our Risen Lord and King. About forty singers meet this Friday at 8 o clock and all members are urged to attend.
Earl Vaughn, 28, of Waterloo, was brought to Waverly by Sheriff Frank Sager after Waterloo officers found stolen articles in his possession. He implicated Ray King of Waterloo as an accomplice. Vaughn received a five year sentence in the reformatory. King awaits release from a DWI sentence.
Jake Roffler living with his brother on First Avenue N E tried to slash his throat with a razor Wednesday morning near the court house park. Officer Ducker found him and he was taken to Dr Sparks office where the wounds were treated and he was released Wednesday afternoon. Authorities believe financial losses from poor investments contributed to the act.
Mrs Charles Goss age 83 died Sunday at 2 o clock at the Evangelical church after her husband passed away years ago she had resided with her sons Henry and Ed and one sister Mrs William Weich of Cedar Falls survived Burial was in Harlington cemetery Rev Lawrence Sohl officiating
Donald W. Woodruff, a five year employee of Waverly Implement, was named manager and began his duties February 1. Meanwhile, Mr Malick, who served as manager for two years, transfers to the Marshalltown branch of International Harvester.
Rev August F Bartels passed away at his home Sunday at about 65. Survived by wife and many relatives. Funeral services planned for Wednesday at 1 30 at home and 2 at St Pauls Lutheran Church. Military services held Friday for Civil War veteran Peter White with American Legion escorts from Waverly post. A poultry school for farmers and wives was held at Wolf’s Hatchery Versusday February 3 with egg judging and a lunch. W R Whitfield of Ames spoke. Egg quality points demonstrated.
Frederika special report: after a postponed Frederika Ionia game due to a car accident injuring three Ionia youths, Frederika teams are idle until February 5 when they face Alta Vista boys and girls teams on Alta Vista floor. The boys seek revenge for last year’s 13 to 12 defeat, while the girls aim for a seventh straight win. Last week the boys beat Tripoli 30 to 16. junior high fell to Tripoli 28 to 1. Six games remain on Frederika schedule.
The American Legion in this city plans a two night talent musical comedy at the opera house on February 18 and 19 featuring local celebrities and a vivid costume background. A hundred local children participate in a miniature wedding scene titled The Wedding of the Little Doll preceding the main show.
