Arthur Brisbane laments business stagnation and imagines a financial version of Dr A S Hyman’s heart tickler to restart the nation’s economy. Across topics, he notes German political shifts, railroad vs auto competition, Jewish persecution in Poland, a Duluth pig theft tale, a clergyman’s moral, and a British House of Commons row over tabasco sauce.
The January term district court will convene January 5 with Judge M F Edwards presiding. Twenty five new cases are listed in the bar docket alongside many old cases to dispose of. Newly elected county officials Rewolt Jr and Richmann assume duties as court opens.

Three persons sustained bruises and cuts in a Saturday crash on highway No. 59 two miles south of Denver. August F. Bremer 32 buttermaker from Williamstown drove south while Alvin M. Lane 26 of Waterloo drove north and skidded off the road before colliding with Bremer’s car. Mrs. Minnie Ludtke 68 of Waterloo suffered a scalp cut needing seven stitches and severe bruising, while Mrs. Bremer 83 had a forehead wound requiring nine stitches and a back injury. Both women were taken to Allen Memorial Hospital by passing motorists. Bremer had minor leg injuries. Lane’s car skidded after leaving the pavement. Bremer’s car was struck in the collision.
Sumner special. The comedy Adam and Eva will be staged by ten Sumner youths on January 4 and 5 in the high school auditorium. Miss Chrystal Burger coaches. Proceeds go to charity. The Ladies Improvement club will meet at their club rooms on Wednesday afternoon January 4 for a regular session. After business the officers will be elected and the afternoon ends with a lunch served by Mrs A A Belknap and Mrs Nels Debel as hostesses. A good attendance is anticipated.
Edward Bennett, 15, son of Mr and Mrs B B Bennett, near Tripoli, sustained a fractured left leg above the ankle and a deep leg gash when the family car skidded into a ditch on the way home from Christmas church services. Edward was struck by the car top while trying to dodge the vehicle. The Bennetts, with siblings Charlotte and Edward, were nearly home when the lights failed and the car tipped. The family drove home after the incident.
Monday December 26 marked the 84th birthday of Mrs William Grebien. Mr and Mrs Grebien hosted a 12:30 dinner and an afternoon gathering at their home with guests including Mr and Mrs Will Grebien Jr and family Siegel Mrs John C Koch and husband and daughter Miss Elda their granddaughter Mrs Leslie Schmidt and husband and Miss Marjorie Grebien of Waterloo.
Prof. Galen Mirick director of the Tripoli Concert Band invites all former horn players to a first annual Christmas season band practice this Wednesday evening. Former Old Town band members received cards. current Tripoli band members will greet attendees as the reception committee.
George Hammetter, 88, the last Civil War veteran of Sumner, died at his home after a long illness. Born in 1843 in Germany, he enlisted in the Union Army in 1864, later moving to Bremer county and amassing up to 2,000 acres. He married twice and is survived by his widow, three sons, one daughter, and a daughter in law. Services were held at Salem Evangelical church with Rev. J. D. Klooz officiating. burial in Zion cemetery.
The junior high declamation contest held last Wednesday was very close with only three points separating the top three in both classes. Miss Calvert of Cedar Falls praised the speakers and compared them to senior high contestants. Winners: Dramatic first Phyllis Hankner, second Alice Kuker, third Darlene Bull. Humorous first Bruce Borchert, second Kathryn Klein, third Wm. Kuker.
Mr and Mrs Frank Kimbal entertained relatives Thursday evening December 22 at their home in honor of Mrs Kimbal s birthday which was that day Guests included Mr and Mrs John Berlin sr Mr and Mrs Frank Beggerow Mr and Mrs Fred Despke and family Mr and Mrs P L Crittenden and son James The evening featured card play and a lunch served by the hostess and her daughter Mrs Crittenden
Dunkerton junior and senior high teams defeated Tripoli teams in a doubleheader, despite lineup injuries. Junior game stayed tight but Dunkerton pulled away late for a 38 to 16 win. senior game followed a similar pattern with Dunkerton finishing strong.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Kammeyer were honored with a noon dinner and a decorated cake on Monday December 26 marking their 35th anniversary. Daughters and relatives from Douglas township Fredericksburg and Tripoli attended. They were married December 26 1898 at St Johns Siegel by Rev Fisher and now live on a farm later moved to Tripoli. Both in good health.
Plans are complete for the Twenty third birthday clinic led by Dr W A Rohlf on Thursday January 5 at Mercy Hospital. Specialists from Rochester and Town City will conduct skin medical and surgical sessions with lectures by University Hospital doctors. Over 100 physicians are anticipated to attend with dinner at the Fortner Hotel.
Pence Miller, longtime assistant manager at the Gamble store, is transferred to Marshalltown to assume the larger manager role this week. No replacement has yet been named in this city. Illness in the Miller family delays family relocation.
The welfare committee of the American Legion Auxiliary packed boxes of food fruit nuts and candy at the hall to aid local families including invalids and aged people. Boxes were distributed Saturday with Christmas Cheer delivered to fourteen homes and thanks extended to the Commercial club for candy donations.
The Waverly Post of the American Legion sponsors a winter boxing series with a six round main event on Thursday evening December 29 featuring Don Larkin of New Hampton at 145 and Ronald Malcomb of Littleton at 145. Also notes a silver wedding anniversary for Mr and Mrs Henry Seekatz celebrated December 12 at home with dinner provided by their children. Additionally Miss Margaret Driscoll underwent a second operation at Mercy hospital after an initial procedure about a month ago.
Relatives traveled to Muscatine to see Miss Julia Kaufmann who is confined in a local hospital and not as well as her visitors hoped. Christmas seal sales were led by Patricia Gallagher Ruth Shader Eileen Hennings and Billy Clark raising nearly 50 dollars through pupils in grades four through six. Mr and Mrs A W Mooney and daughters Verla and Leona spent Christmas Day with Mr Mooney's family. Leona a Coe College student enjoys a week of vacation. George J Sager and family from Waterloo were guests at John Sager and Mrs Brechner's homes. Rose Mary Sager stayed with her grandmother Mrs Brechner for a few days.
