Turkey Drawing for 30 hens set Friday in Tripoli

A Tripoli Commercial club event sponsors a drawing for 30 hen turkeys. Tickets are distributed by 39 local firms and paid on account until 2 30 p m Friday. The drawing occurs at 3 p m at the American Savings Bank corner. Turkeys weigh nine to 12 pounds and are fresh frozen. Participating firms names appear in another ad. Traders in Tripoli are excluded. Winners must be present.

Hearing Called On Union Election For Farmers Produce Co

The National Labor Relations Board calls a hearing at Tripoli Town Hall to decide if and when an election among Farmers Produce Co employees will be held for union representation. The International Union of Poultry House Workers has petitioned for the election and a NLRB representative will preside.

Christmas School Dismissal Set For 2 15 P M

E R Shriver announces Tripoli Public Schools will dismiss at 2 15 P M Friday for Christmas holidays. Buses will return pupils home at that time. Classes resume Tuesday January 3 at the regular time.

Hearing On Tripoli Community School District Start

Public hearing is set for next Tuesday at 8 p m in Waverly courthouse to review a petition for a new Tripoli Community School District. About 712 sections across Fremont Douglas Leroy Warren Frederika and Dayton townships would join the district with objections due by noon Dec 27 and reviewed that night.

Christmas Party of St. Peter's Womans Guild Held

Fifty seven members and guests attended the annual Christmas party of the Women’s Guild of St. Peter's Evangelical and Re formed church last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Perry Crittenden entertained with a reading and a candlelight service was given by several members. Gifts were exchanged and presented to the Rev. and Mrs. E F Puhlmann.

Grace Lutheran Brotherhood Names 56 Officers for 1956

During the Grace Lutheran Brotherhood meeting on Thursday evening officers for 1956 were elected. Robert Kuhrt becomes president succeeding Oscar Bany. Marwin Blasberg is vice president succeeding Albert Oberlieu. Leo Sauerbrei is secretary succeeding Alfred Rieck. Clarence Nerge becomes treasurer, Raymond Guhlow succeeds Elmer Haverkamp as dartball captain, and Walter Beisner as assistant captain.

Holiday Weekend Closing Hours Announced by Tripoli Club

The Tripoli Commercial club announced year end holiday closing hours. Stores stay open tonight through Friday until 9 p m and close at 6 p m on Christmas Eve Saturday. They close Sunday and Monday, resume Tuesday. New Year’s Eve prompts 6 p m closing on Saturday December 31 with Sunday and Monday closed and business resuming Tuesday morning.

Funeral for William Mohlis in Readlyn

William Mohlis 77 died Wednesday in Rockford Illinois from a heart attack. Funeral services were held Saturday at Matthias Funeral Home with Rev Elmer Jacobs officiating and burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery Readlyn. He is survived by a daughter Mrs Edmund Truitt two sisters Mrs Otto Walther and Mrs Mary Adrian and a brother Carl.

Truck destroyed by Friday morning farm blaze near Tripoli

A truck valued at 825 dollars was destroyed by fire at the E. W. Nelson farm north of Tripoli Friday morning. Ivan Ingersoll of Waverly owned and operated the grinder, which was saved. Tripoli Fire Department answered and confined the blaze.

Farmers Produce This Week Notes 20th Anniversary

Twentieth anniversary of Farmers Produce Co in Tripoli noted in a two page ad in The Leader. The firm began shipping eggs from Tripoli on December 27, 1935, now ships over 450 carloads yearly of eggs poultry turkeys corn and canned products via its affiliate Tripoli Canning Co Inc. Elmer Wilharm says payroll is 250000 with about 100 workers year round and the firms pay millions to local farmers. The Tripoli operations began in a frame building north of the Tripoli Implement Co. that building burned in the early 40s and the turkey hatchery now occupies the site.

Tripoli cagers sweep two doubleheaders in five days

Tripoli High School basketball teams won their second doubleheader in a row at Fredericksburg Tuesday night. The girls won 59 55 in overtime led by Shirley Sauerbrei 24 and Darlyl Buls 23. The boys won 63 53 with Terry Dreyer scoring 16 and Carlyle Nicklaus 15.

Virginia Mueller Seriously Ill With Bulbar Polio

Virginia Mueller daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Mueller is in serious condition at University hospital Iowa City with bulbar polio. She was stricken last week and taken to Iowa City Friday. Her parents say she is holding her own. Virginia is a Frederika High School senior and a substitute on the girls basketball team.

Four Teens Fined For Taking Beer In Wayside Inn

Four teen-agers were fined $25 and costs in Mayor Rudolph Piegers' court for taking a case of beer from the Wayside Inn. The youths, two Readlyn and two Tripoli residents, admitted the theft and had consumed six cans. The mayor suspended $15 of each fine pending good behavior and released them to their parents with privileges suspended as long as needed.

The Tripoli vicinity endured the coldest week on record with a low of 16 degrees below zero and about three inches of light snow. Temperatures ranged from 16 below to zero on successive nights as three inches of snowfall melted slowly from highways.

Extension Office Opens in Frese Building Tripoli

Bremer County Extension office moves to new downtown Tripoli location in the Frese building. Equipment and furnishings were moved Saturday morning with help from Farmers Produce Co and Tripoli Implement Co. Richard Mathews and assistant Karl Asmus adjusted operations and were back to regular schedule by midweek.

January Term Opens in Bremer County District Court

The Bremer County District Court will open January 3 with Judge Tom Boynton on the bench. Grand jurors report January 4 at 10 a.m. and trial jurors report January 10. The lists name jurors from Bremer, Fairbank, Readlyn, Sumner, Janesville, Tripoli, Waverly, Denver, Sonia, Plainfield, and Merl Simpson among others.
