Babson foresees Eisenhower likely renominated and re elected in 1956 with a strong Republican showing. He warns against heavy speech making and notes 1956 should bring higher wages, rising advertising, easier money, and continued consumer demand for housing and goods.
Tripoli and surrounding area enjoyed a mid winter warm spell easing a six week cold grip. Temperatures rose above freezing for the first time since before Thanksgiving, with a mild week ahead after frosty Saturday hazards. A semi truck bound for Tripoli jackknifed near Charles City, killing the driver. Highs reached the 40s, lows near the 20s, as sun melted frost and travel improved.
Tripoli Post Office, led by Postmaster Ray H. Fink, reported its biggest Christmas season. Early mailing by patrons spread holiday mail evenly over two weeks, easing workload despite record volume.
St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church completed a 21-note chime addition to the organ, funded by the memorial fund at a cost of 1235 dollars. The chimes feature all electric actions, relays, a five point volume control, rectifier, cutout switch and wall mounting canopy, first used in a Christmas concert amplified from the church tower.
The Leader will appear one day late on Thursday due to a legal holiday. Employees will be on vacation with their families. Regular publication resumes on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
A year in Tripoli highlighted by new insurance agent Jack M. Frese, a community chest drive surpassing its $2 530 target, school reorganizational talks, snowfalls, new fire chief Howard Holm and other officers, business openings and closures, crimes, anniversaries, school events, and a large music contest with 25 area schools hosting in March.
A National Labor Relations Board hearing at Town Hall last Wednesday considered a petition by the Farmers Produce Co. workers seeking an organizing election. Ray C. Jenkins noted the unit would cover about six drivers plus warehouse and production staff, totaling roughly 74 employees. The testimony from owner Elmer Wilharm and union leader Clarence J. Skinner will be sent to Washington for final action.
Two Bremer county schools reported completing 100 dental work records last week. Warren No. 8 led with teacher Mrs. Vera Ingham and a list of students and staff including Darrel Buchholz Deborah Pipho Steven Heideman Verla Zander Roger Buchholz Ann Platte Mary Kallenbach Colleen Kallenbach Jean Senst and Paul Zander among others. Warren No. 2 followed under teacher Mrs. Theodore Oberlieu with names Dennis Epley Cordell Lageschulte Steven Egli Early Schwartz Dean Clausing Donna Lageschulte James Fitzpatrick Charles Schwartz Judith Oldenburger Louis Schwartz and Mary Margaret Ormston.
A surprise bridal shower honoring Mardell Bock was held Tuesday evening at the Paul Hartman home. Elaine and Wilma Hartman hosted with fourteen guests attending. Games provided entertainment and prizes for the honoree. Lunch was served by the hostesses. Miss Bock wed Maynard Klemp of Sumner on January 1.
A Friday afternoon turkey drawing drew a large crowd in downtown Tripoli. The event, funded by 39 Tripoli Commercial Club members, announced winners including Romane Biermann and Mrs. Art Hooper among many others. Four drawn names were absent to claim prizes. The promotion concludes a yearlong series by local merchants with potential plans for next year undecided.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Goodenbour received a Christmas day call from their son Pfc. Lloyd Goodenbour, stationed with the armed forces in Germany. He spoke from Mainz, Germany, sharing holiday updates and greetings.
All livestock and poultry feeders in the area are urged to attend a program at the Town Hall on Friday January 6 at 8 pm sponsored by Colburn Feed Mill. The meeting will feature a feed discussion slide show progress photos on cross breeding buffalo with all cattle breeds free lunch merchandise coupons and door prizes for ladies. Feeder families are welcome.
G R Rettig announces Tripoli Commercial club will keep shops open Friday evening for shoppers. Stores close Saturday evening so employees can celebrate New Year's Eve with families. Regular Saturday night hours resume January 7.
Tripoli girls open sectional play against Readlyn at Janesville on Wednesday February 1 as announced by the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union. Other local teams like Oran Dunkerton Fre dericksburg and Janesville districts also hold early games with semifinals February 2 and finals February 4.
A generous supply of Tripoli business calendars for 1956 remains at 40 local firms. Calendars are free to any business house. This edition features pictures of the three local churches.
Bremer County District Court will open next Tuesday in Waverly with twelve criminal cases and twenty new civil cases added to the docket. Notable criminal matters include State of Iowa v. Berger, Kalkbrenner, Volk, Steege, Spang, Parson, Sikkink, Liebers, Stufflebeam, Ahrenstorff, Johnson, and Parson. civil filings list Evelyn Moetsch v. Prestien and multiple law, equity, and divorce actions.
Bremer County Board of Education studied a petition to hold an election on forming a reorganized Tripoli Community School District. A decision is expected soon, with legal notices to follow, and a potential election set within 30 days of January 4 if no appeals arise.
Theo Bock moves to Tripoli and sells his farm with a close out sale set for next Tuesday January 3 starting at noon. The sale at the farm two and a half miles north of Tripoli on the Frederika road features eighteen Holstein cattle grain feed and a full line of farm machinery. Evangelical and Reformed brotherhood will provide lunch Orville Naber is auctioneer and American Savings Bank acts as clerk.
Over 160 members and friends attended an illustrated lecture on Central Europe in the Grace Lutheran Parish hall. The speaker, Pfc Eldon Hoppenworth, was home on a 30 day leave.
The Band Mothers will gather in the home economics room at Tri poli High on Wednesday evening January 4 at 8 p m. Hostesses are Mrs Raymond Duecker, Mrs Donald Hunemuller and Mrs Eldo Kehe.
