Santa Claus returns Saturday December 17 in Tripoli with candy sacks for every child at the opera house. Last week crowds packed the venue as he arrived at two o'clock and the high school band played while four film reels and candy distribution followed.
The January term jury panel for Bremer county district court was drawn this week in the clerk of the district court office. Sunday December 11 marked Mrs. Chris Winning’s birthday with a family gathering for afternoon and 5 30 dinner. Guests included H O Steege Ewald Pipho Merwin Denver Will Haase Esther Frederika Will Harmening Lavern Charlotte Marian Bernice F H Harmening Orval Cholene Boyle Irene Oleson Imogene Chesebro. A birthday cake by F H Harmening served as centerpiece and guests enjoyed cards and visiting.
A Christmas program will be held at Chapin school Freemont No. 1 on Thursday evening December 22 at 8 o'clock. Admission is 10 cents and lunch will be served free. Ida Snelling, teacher.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion hall on Tuesday evening December 13 with fifteen members present. Reports were given, activities discussed, and plans made for Christmas events. An initiation honored junior members Darlene Buls Darleth Ambrose Hulda Dettmer Zatha Kroll Shirley Rosenthal Geraldine Goodenbour Iola Kuker Lucille Hesse Beverly Nienhaus Zenovia Henning Violet Ambrose, followed by a lunch hosted by Mrs. W H Warner Mrs E C Claus and Mrs L H Fink.
Frigid weather has completed a municipal ice rink east of Main street sponsored by the local American Legion post. The rink, begun last year, drew many men, women and children to skate. Past issues with water retention were solved, and the large basin now accommodates many skaters, remaining open through the winter barring a return of mild weather.
The Congregational church choir of about 25 voices will premiere C B Haley’s Sacred Cantata The Christ Child on Thursday evening December 22 at 8 oclock. The performance is one night only and provisions are being made for a large attendance. Begin planning now.
Mr and Mrs H H Schmidt and daughter Darlene from southwest of town visited the home of Mr and Mrs Herman Kuhrt on Sunday.
The 19338 Tripoli Community Calendar is ready for distribution at Tripoli Hardware Company. Eighteen sponsors including Buechele Lumber American Savings Bank and Standard Oil Service Station funded a two color 14 by 20 inch calendar with weather, parcel post rates, stock breeders data, weights and measures, and more for all residents.
Denver special reports Ernest Guenther 80 died Monday morning after months of heart trouble. A wood worker and blacksmith, he long ran a hardware business with Guy Farnsworth and was Denver’s oldest local businessman, with over 55 years here. Survived by twelve children and four daughters, funeral 1:30 pm at St Peter's Lutheran Church, burial in Denver Lutheran Cemetery. Rev Fred Schoenbohm officiated.
Mr and Mrs Henry Weihe senior of this city observed their forty second wedding anniversary on Sunday December 11. Children and grandchildren returned home for a surprise observance with a dinner at six o clock. Guests included their daughter Mrs Louis Tegtmeier Finchford and family, Mr and Mrs Louis Weihe Crane Creek and family, Mr and Mrs Walter Springer Hulda Dettmer Arthur and Ed Weihe, a son Henry Weihe Jr and Mrs Weihe of Litchfield Minnesota unable to attend. Mrs Weihe injured her knee in a fall Sunday morning but enjoyed the visit despite limited movement.
Members of Siegel Lutheran church surprised Rev and Mrs C G Gerlach on their silver wedding anniversary Saturday December 10 at 11 45 am. A short service by Rev Baum preceded a bountiful chicken dinner prepared by the ladies and a male quartet supplied vocal numbers. Guests visited and departed late in the afternoon. The couple received a purse of silver.
Commencing Monday December 19 most businesses will stay open evenings for the last week before Christmas to aid those busy during the day. After Christmas they return to their usual schedule of Wednesday and Saturday evening openings.
The Ladies Aid will serve a chicken pie supper on Thursday afternoon December 15 from 5 to 6.30 at the Congregational church basement. Menu includes chicken pie mashed potatoes creamed carrots and peas buns pickles jelly pumpkin pie and coffee. Large plate 25c small 15c.
Miss Emilda Borcherding and Clarence Niewoehner married at St John s Lutheran with double ring ceremony. Attendants included Ora Eggleston and Clara Steege. Bride wore white satin gown. reception at bridegroom s parents home. This ties in with 25th and 20th anniversaries in the family. They plan to live on a farm northwest of Sumner after a Minnesota trip.
At Bremer County Medical Society’s annual meeting in Waverly last Wednesday evening Dr A M Stegeman of this city was elected president for the coming year. Other officers named include F J Bries Sumner as vice president J E Whitmire Sumner as secretary and treasurer L C Kern Waverly as delegate to the state convention and F R Sparks Waverly as alternate. The gathering opened with a dinner and program with Dr Rathe of Waverly delivering the principal address.
Camp Fire Girls and auxiliary members continue selling Christmas Health Seals. The seals brighten packages and letters while funds support health and welfare projects. Buy seals to help a good cause.
J. A. Hale announced that printed Christmas greeting cards may use one and one half cents postage if unsealed with only a written inscription and sender details. Three cents applies if the card bears a personal message or seal is used. Unsealed one and a half cent cards travel as third class mail, requiring exact addresses and no forwarding service, and third class processing waits on higher classes.
Fred Rodemeyer will hold a full closing out sale on his Douglas township farm on Wednesday December 21. He plans to move to Waverly after the new year and has rented the farm to Orville Eick near Bremer. The sale items listing appears on another page of this week's Leader.
Miss Marjorie Vosselier and Vern Schild, both of this city, wed at the Evangelical church Sunday at two thirty in a ceremony by Rev. George A. Stauffacher. Soloists Mrs. Howard Stevens and accompanist Frederick Feldman performed preceding music. Attendants were Viola Schild and Edward Wosseller. A wedding dinner and reception followed at the bride’s parents’ home. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Vosseler, is a Waverly graduate and longtime Plainfield teacher. the groom is son of Mr and Mrs Fred Schild. After a month’s California trip, the couple will live on a local farm.
Mrs R Eldon Laird traveled to Two Rivers Wisconsin last week after learning her father Dr E J Soik died suddenly of a heart attack. Soik was buried Saturday as Mrs Soik planned to return home. she suffered a stroke Sunday and died minutes later. The couple leaves two children and two grandchildren. both were well known in the city.
The Driscoll sisters face renewed trouble as Margaret, recently operated on at Mercy hospital, awaits a second operation this week. Celia, caring for her at home, fractured her left arm in a slip on an icy crossing near the First National Bank building, bringing two patients to their home. Their sister Isabelle from Cincinnati arrived to help.
A movement aims to reopen the Waverly Brewery owned by William Heiberg. If beer cannot be produced in the state malt syrup production will be pursued. The plan seeks $65,000 by selling stock at $25 per share. O L Henninger of Chicago toured the site and said the plant is nearly ready to manufacture beer and would employ many workers.
Miss Emma Anhalt remains confined to bed with little improvement after months of illness. C. W. Lynch, agent for the C. G. W. here, has been off duty several days due to flu. Ellis Hoteling of Shellsburg serves as relief agent. Miss Margaret Bredow hosted a card party for twenty at her home last Saturday. Miss Dorothy Mueller and Clarence Iserman earned high honors. Catholic Ladies Auxiliary held its December 8 meeting electing Mrs. Leo Duggan Mrs. H. L. Leslie and Miss Kate Sullivan to offices. Marion McKeever secretary and Kathryn McKiusky treasurer. other committees to be appointed. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Murphy plan to move to a farm near The Misses Suzanne and Peggy McKliget continue to be mentioned as residing with their family.
