Santa Claus visits Tripoli Saturday for a free 1:30 p.m. film program with treats and a gift for every child. All local kids invited. Santa arrives during the show and reappears at the door. A second free show and more treats are planned for Dec 22 with a cash prize drawing.
Kids urged to mail Santa letters to The Leader or bring them to the Saturday show. Letters printed in next week’s issue then sent to the North Pole for Christmas. To be printed, letters must be in The Leader office by Saturday night.
Tickets offered with each $1 purchase or on account at Tripoli firms. Drawings begin after free movies at Tripoli Theatre, 2:30 p m December 22. One prize per person, 40 prizes of 5 dollars each. Merchants and families excluded. Families urged to shop, enjoy free parking, and let children attend the show.
Two Readlyn youths Roger and Ronald Zars were awarded Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship medals at Immanuel Lutheran Church for saving siblings during a farm house fire. The presentation was by Rub en Wittenburg and Earl Rommel Sr. The citation praises their quick action to help family members escape the blaze and notes the community pride in their selflessness. The event coincided with a Silver Anniversary observance for Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zabel at Bundy Church.
Mrs Katherine Mahoney was hospitalized at St Josephs hospital New Hampton since Wednesday and returned home Monday evening leaving the hospital after treatment and recovery.
Tripoli's junior high basketball team, largely eighth graders, defeated Janesville 57 to 30 on the road. Kehe led with 16 points, followed by Spier 15 and Drewis 11. Tripoli raced to a 13-6 first quarter lead, trailed 23-16 at half, then surged 44-21 in the third and closed strong.
Major Anthony Tripoli, stationed in Munich, writes to Tri poli Commercial club president Lorenz Bunger expressing interest in visiting Tripoli California. He hopes for an assignment near Los Angeles as associate professor of air science, eyeing retirement in southern California on a small farm, plans to learn poultry farming, and praises German Bavarians. He mentions potential future travel through the town and sends regards, noting possible return to the U S in mid or late next year.
Readlyn special reporting that Rev J L Strelow pastor of St Pauls Lutheran church has accepted a call from First St Pauls Lutheran church in Pittsburgh Pa. He and his family will move next week after being released by the local church at a Sunday congregational meeting. He will preach farewell service at 9 30 a m Sunday.
Walter Sommer spent the weekend in Des Moines for a Fair board convention and returned home Tuesday.
Bremer county farmers voted about three to one for the soil bank provisions in the corn referendum Tuesday, with 371 voting yes and 125 voting no. Five votes were challenged but would not affect the county result, a near 75 percent margin in favor. Statewide results showed broad support but not the two-thirds needed, with national totals unavailable Wednesday morning as counting continued.
Readlyn boys and girls basketball teams defeated Denver at Waverly on Monday. The Readlyn girls won 32-25, taking their first win over Denver in four years, led by Sauerbrei with 17 and Clark 13 for Denver. The Readlyn boys triumphed 65-61 as Lehmkuhl and C Matthias scored 20 each, while Guenther led Denver with 24.
Tripoli Woman's club meets next Wednesday at 8 p m at Town hall for its Christmas party. Hostesses are Mrs. Richard Semler and Mrs. L J Magnall. The program includes a Christmas reading by Mrs. C H Smith a Christmas story by Mrs. H J Frese and a Bible story by Mrs. Lester Gatch.
Tripoli chapter of the American Red Cross accepts contributions to Hungarian relief. Geo. Lindsley chairs the chapter and reports funds will go to the Red Cross national HQ for cloth ing, food and other needs of Hungarian refugees. Donations can be left with H. J. Frese, treasurer, at the American Savings Bank.
Ruth Weidler daughter of the Rev and Mrs W D Weidler will take part in a Wartburg college student recital in the Fine Arts building at Wartburg Wa verly tomorrow night starting at 7 30 oclock She will perform a piano selection Three other students will also present numbers Public is invited to attend.
Funeral services for Tripoli native Mrs Clyde P Welch 56 of Waterloo were held at Trinity American Lutheran with Rev G E Melchert in charge. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery. Born Frieda Buenneke on July 24 1900 she died of cancer. Survived by husband daughter Marie Michael Waterloo two sons Eugene B and Clyde G Jr both of Waterloo five grandchildren two brothers Fred Buenneke Waterloo and Simon Buenneke Denver, preceded by parents a sister and a brother.
Readlyn High School basketball split four games last week with the boys winning two and the girls two. In Tuesday action Readlyn boys beat Janesville 63 to 40 while the Readlyn girls fell 50 to 38. C Matthias scored 21 for Readlyn and Jen nings had 28 for Janesville. V Sauerbrei led Readlyn with 18. On Friday Readlyn boys defeated Frederika 76 to 57 as Matthias poured in 28 points and Sievers led Frederika with 27. Readlyn girls dropped 50 to 39. B Bockhaus added 24 for Frederika and Sauerbrei 23 for Readlyn.
Annual candlelighting service by the Youth Fellowship at St Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church Sunday at 8 pm. Theme Christ, the Hope of the World. Congregation carol singing with the church choir and children's choir directed by Mrs. R. J. Bunger. Pastor to speak briefly. public invited.
Postmaster Ray Fink announced the Tripoli Post Office will stay open Saturdays until 5 p m for the next two weeks to help with Christmas mailing. Window service will run on December 15 and 22, shifting from the normal 12:30 p m Saturday closing. After Christmas the 12:30 p m closing resumes.
Voters will decide next Monday whether 19 operating districts merge to form Plainfield Community School district. Boundaries set last month cover Bremer and Butler counties with parts of La Fayette Polk Douglas townships and Fremont township. A 15 of 19 voting districts must approve by majority. if passed, only favorable districts join and the district takes effect July 1, 1957. Polls open noon to 7 p.m. locations listed in each district.
Mrs. Larry Dirks, 39, is hospitalized at Scholtz Memorial in Waterloo with cuts and bruises after a Sunday night collision three miles south of Klinger. Her husband was not injured. both cars suffered extensive damage when the moving car struck an unlit parked vehicle.
Wartburg College will present its traditional Christmas at Wartburg program in the Knights gym Sunday at 8 p m. Three choirs instrumental groups and dramatics and art departments will perform with over 200 students and faculty members taking part. Friends of Wartburg are invited guests.
Next week’s Leader issue dated December 19 will be the annual Christmas edition. It will feature greetings from local businesses and professionals, complete Christmas programs for area churches, and many letters to Santa from community children. Watch for this feature.
The Tripoli grade school presents A Christmas Carol Pageant with all grades kindergarten through eighth in the high school gymnasium tonight at 8 o clock. Directed by Janice Garrison the program opens with the high school mixed chorus and ends with Silent Night in German. Parents and friends of the students are invited.
Tripoli Community Chest raised 2751.55 dollars surpassing the 1957 goal of 2720 by 31.55 at a Town hall board meeting. Campaign chairs Mrs. Ray Bunger and Elmer Wilharm announced the final figure and the board approved its distribution to health welfare and recreation groups. The board also authorized purchase of two five dollar bonds for the Bremer County TB and Health association for the Christmas Seal campaign. Expiring in February are directors Alice Krueger and W. A. Kuker. A nominating committee and an auditing committee were appointed for the annual meeting.
Tripoli retail merchants will stay open evenings from December 19 through December 24. The Tripoli Commercial Club announced stores will be open Wednesday through Saturday nights and close at 6 p m on Christmas Eve Monday night December 24.
Tripoli boys defeated Janesville 66 to 57 as Terry Dreyer and Ron Henninger led with 23 and 22 points. Girls’ team beat Janesville 52 to 32 with Sherrie Sauerbrei scoring 18 as the Panthers split a Denver doubleheader. Tripoli finishes first half Tuesday then meets Frederika Friday and Frederickshoro next Tuesday before year end.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will host a bake sale on Saturday December 15 starting at 3 PM at Bock s Plumbing Heating shop. Proceeds benefit the auxiliary relief fund.
