Churches across the Tripoli area announce special Christmas season services for December 23 and Christmas Day. Public is urged to attend. members may worship at any listed church. Christmas Eve programs and caroling are planned, with details and schedules provided by Congregational and Grace Lutheran congregations.
Plainfield Community School district approved by 77 percent overall with 411 votes for and 123 against across Butler and Bremer counties. Bremer turnout over 80 percent in favor. Two Fremont township districts in Butler county rejected. New district slated to take effect July 1 with a board election to be scheduled.
A closing out farm sale of equipment stock grain and feed will be held Friday Jan 4 by Mrs Fred Doepke at the farm one mile west and a quarter mile south of Tripoli The sale starts at 1230 p m St Peters Evangelical and Reformed church brother hood will have a lunch stand Orville Naber Dumont will be auctioneer and American Savings Bank will clerk Details of the sale will be printed in next week's Leader.
The Leader presents its annual Christmas edition with 18 pages in two sections containing greetings from Tripoli area business and professional firms. It marks 1956 years since Christ's birth and notes schedule shifts: due to holidays, publication will be one day late next week and again the following week.
Tripoli High School split a doubleheader with Fredericksburg on a Tuesday night. The boys rebounded from an earlier defeat to win 57-31, while the Fredericksburg girls upended Tripoli 57-33. Tripoli led 10-6 after one, 24-11 at half, and 38-20 after three as Kalkbrenner led with 12. Niemeyer topped Fredericksburg with 29.
By month end the Bremer County Tuberculosis and Health Association drive totals to 401.46 dollars. Mrs G R Rettig, local Christmas Seal Sale chairman, notes the brother and sister on the 1956 seals will be remembered for their contribution as the drive continues to find funds for case finding health education and patient services in the nationwide tuberculosis control program.
Mr and Mrs John Hagenow will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house near Bremer on Sunday from 2 to 4 p m and 7 to 9 p m at their farm home. They were married at Klinger on December 21, 1916. They have five children Arnold Hagenow Bremer Alma Mrs Newton Bahr Harold Hagenow Waverly and Norma and Hilda Hagenow at home. They also have eight grandchildren.
A large crowd attended the Christmas program at Public School last Wednesday night. Students from all grades and the high school mixed chorus performed a pageant titled A Christmas Pageant World Meant to showcase carols sung by multiple grade levels with solos from Caroline Kehe and others. The program featured three episodes with roles for shepherds, monks, and kings, and included performances by seventh through eighth grades, kindergarten, and first through third grades, concluding with group carols and a duet.
Funeral services for Herman W. Milius 79 were held Saturday at Matthias Funeral home and St John s Lutheran church Maxfield township with Rev Wm Barrack in charge. He died December 12 at his home east of Denver of a heart ailment. Burial was in Fairview cemetery Denver with six pallbearers named. Born January 4 1877 he never married.
Bremer county district court announced grand jurors for 1957 and trial jurors for the January term. Grand jurors report January 3 at 10 a.m. in the courthouse. trial jurors report January 7 at 10 a.m. Various jurors from Denver, Readlyn, Sumner, Tripoli, Waverly, and surrounding areas are listed with the presiding judge, Tom Boynton, Forest City.
Tripoli Public schools will be dismissed for the Christmas holidays at 2 30 pm Friday Sept FE R Shriver announced this week. Buses will return pupils to their homes at that time. Classes will resume Wednesday Jan 2 at the regular time.
Ronald Warner arrived home Sunday morning and will spend his 30 day leave from the navy with his parents Mr and Mrs W H Warner.
Hasbrouck Voetmann Lumber Co suffered about 200 dollars in damage after a fire damaged the east wall of the main office late Saturday night. The fire was spotted by Mrs. Robert Selck from Tripoli Cafe across the street. Tri Poli Fire Department crews entered the office and used a extinguisher before a fire truck arrived. The blaze, started near the wall, could have spread if not for early discovery and a southwest wind.
Saturday event in Tripoli features a 200 cash certificate drawing at American Savings Bank at 3 p m after a 1 30 p m kids film and Santa visit at Tripoli theatre. Tickets issued by local firms for each cash purchase or on account until 2 30 p m. Five dollar certificates will be awarded to 40 winners redeemable at participating firms. Excludes Tripoli merchants and families.
Final boundaries for the proposed Sumner Community School district will be decided at a joint meeting of Bremer Chickasaw and Fayette county boards in Waverly at 8 p m on Monday January 7. Objections were heard December 5 leading to removal of land from the district leaving about 131 sections. If approved the district would be among the state's largest area. No objections in Bremer. all removed land is in Chickasaw and Fayette. A district vote is expected in late January or early February.
All tickets for Saturday's drawing must be in individual boxes at each business by 2 30 p m. Merchants should bring their ticket boxes to the large drawing drum at the bank corner no later than 3 p m. This is the last drawing of the year and all unused 1956 tickets must be included to be eligible for a prize.
The Commercial club ends its Christmas promotion with a final prize draw where only one prize per person is allowed and attendees must be present to win. Last Saturday over 500 kids flocked to Tripoli theatre for free movies, Santa, and treats. another large crowd is expected this Saturday as residents finish shopping and enjoy parking and courteous service. Santa letters are printed in this issue and sent to the North Pole.
Tripoli stores will stay open to 9 p m Wednesday Thursday and Friday and 10 p m Saturday during the year end holidays. They close at 6 p m Monday Christmas Eve and are closed Tuesday Christmas Day, reopening at regular time Wednesday. The schedule repeats next week with 6 p m closings on Dec 31 and a New Year’s Day closing, reopening Jan 2.
Tripoli Post Office will have no window service Monday afternoon December 24. Regular local box and rural route service will operate. The window will be open until 12 30 p m and again after 5 30 p m for parcels and general delivery. Morning service advised for all other business. No service on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
