In Tivoli New York a 37 year old teacher was acquitted after a jury found him not guilty of beating a 13 year old boy with a rubber hose and possibly striking him with a fist. He admitted the hose use but denied striking with a fist.
Dr. R. M. Hughes president of Iowa State College has been engaged to speak at the dedication services of the new school building in Tripoli on Sunday December 16. He is a noted speaker and will deliver an interesting message to listeners.
Mrs. O R Nyswander of Monona, 24, died at Mercy hospital following an operation for an abscess. Born January 19 1911 in Albert LeaMinn, she grew up in Nashua and later moved to this city with her parents. She married C R Nyswander on August 3 1932. Funeral services were held at the Nelson home and burial followed in Albert Lea. Rev L A Gustafson led the service.
Mrs. J W Griffith aged 65 died Sunday at the home of her son Bowen Griffith in Solon Iowa where she had been living. Her husband Rev J W Griffith long served as pastor of the local Baptist church and is now deceased. The body will be brought to the city Wednesday for services at the Baptist church Thursday afternoon with Rev V C Oltrogge officiating and burial in Harlington Cemetery. She is survived by Bowen Griffith.
Mrs. C Hardwig traveled to Denver after the Thanksgiving Day auto accident that killed her brother in law Frank Steffin. Survived by his wife Marie Friedemann and three children. Steffin had long worked at Wartburg Publishing here before moving to Denver where he was with the Denver Post.
The fire company was called to the residence of Doc Allen on Ninth Street Northwest last Wednesday evening about 11 30. The family had retired for the night and the blaze, confined to the second story, was not noticed until.

John Degelau about 37 died at his Windom Minnesota home at 4 oclock Friday morning December 7. Cause not stated but likely heart attack given long heart trouble. Survived by widow Ida Hesse and twin children Jack and Elaine aged 8. Lived with uncle Henry Dettmering as a child, later at various places, worked at the Leader office in 1925 1926, and spent years in other Minnesota towns.
Mrs J C Koch traveled to Waterloo on Thursday and stayed through the weekend visiting her daughter Mrs Ray Nieth and husband. They brought her home Sunday after a short stop at the Koch home.
Tripoli's Board of Education receives high praise for completing the new high school building after long planning and construction. Members include P. A. Goodenbour president J. A. Nienhaus H. J. Frese J. J. Fink Randolph Piegers H. H. Nevermann treasurer M. W. Bennett secretary.
Victor Webbeking of Minneapolis arrived Monday to stay a few days with his uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs William Garland. He plans to travel to California with Mr and Mrs Oscar Klammer who have stayed at the Garland home the past two weeks.
Arthur Tonne, a mechanic at the Hemingway Pettit Garage in Oelwein, broke an arm Monday morning when he fell downstairs at the garage. He was taken to Mercy hospital for treatment. Tonne was formerly employed at the Ambrose garage and had recently moved to Oelwein.
At the Tripoli Aire department annual meeting on Monday, officers were re elected: Fire Chief E H Hankner Secretary Ed Rosenthal and Treasurer E H Stehn. The group also voted to hold the annual fireman dance in January. Dr E C Claus attended a Blackhawk county dental association meeting in Waterloo Tuesday evening.
Commencing Monday December seventeenth the stores in Tripoli will extend hours to evenings through Christmas to accommodate shoppers unable to visit by day. The custom mirrors prior years and aims to ease holiday purchasing for residents.
Miss Erna Blasberg daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Blasberg of Maxfield township and Henry Schwemm son of Mr and Mrs Gustav Schwemm of Douglas township were married Thursday December 6 at 2 pm at St Johns Lutheran church in Maxfield. The Rev J G Bearmann officiated before relatives and friends. Bridesmaid was Margaret Schwemm and best man Alvin Blasberg. The dresses were white satin and coral crepe with matching bouquets. A reception for about 60 followed at the bride’s parents home with a two course dinner served by Hedwig Helene Gerlach Lorena Blasberg and Laurena Buhr. The couple will live with the groom’s parents until March 1 then operate the Frese farm south of Tripoli.
The American Legion and Auxiliary announce their annual Christmas party for Monday evening December 17 at the Legion hall. The event features a Christmas tree Santa Claus and a broadcasting station for children to broadcast their program. Ex-service men auxiliary members and families are invited. attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food toys and clothing for needy families.
J P Murphy as receiver sues Ed Petratz for 201 55 in a district court filing. Two notes appear in the document. A stray line about pipe smokers likens them to loafers.

Mrs. Sylvia Lyttle, 96, died at her Waterloo home on Saturday evening after a day of pneumonia. Born Feb 1, 1838 in Ohio, she married Thomas Lyttle in 1857 and moved to Bremer County in 1861. Survivors include son Claud T. Lyttle, a grandson and a granddaughter. Funeral Monday at Parrott and Wood chapel with burial in Alcock Cemetery Frederika.
Public urged to mail Christmas cards and parcels early to ensure arrival before Christmas Day. Post office lists recommended mailing windows by region from Dec 15 to 21 with closure on Christmas Day and no window service. Special delivery mail will be delivered. first class mail ships as usual.
