A satirical survey rails at postwar debt promises and honor while citing Britain France and Finland. It notes alleged false payments, a tuberculin vaccination trial for convicts, and Roosevelt's crime fight. It also jests about Shakespeare in New York and Huey Long share-the-wealth efforts in Harlem with urban labor questions.
A large crowd from city and country attended the dedication of Tripoli's new high school building on Sunday December 16. Dr. R M Hughes president of Iowa State College gave the address and noted education gains over 44 years. Over 400 inspected the building in the afternoon and about 700 attended the evening program.
Mrs. Louise Boderman, 89, died Tuesday night at 11:30 at the home of her daughter Mrs. F H Harmening in this city due to old age infirmities. She would have turned 90 on January 5, 1935. Survived by four daughters and five sons, plus two brothers. Funeral services at home Saturday at 1 pm and then at St Peter's Evangelical church. An obituary will be printed next week.
The primary operetta Magic Gingerbread was staged Tuesday evening December 18 by first through third grades in the high school auditorium. Act 1 shows a lawn party and cooks making gingerbread with magic dough. Act 2 features the Ginger Bread family returning to the baking pan to avoid the witch as the party continues. Characters include Gerhardt Rettig and Molly Maxine Peters Jane Encia Lamb Nan Jeanette Morf Susie Jane Lois Drewis the Ginger Bread man Paul Bierie wife Jean Doty Bridget Ann Marlys Hesse the twins Mary Ruth Claus Delores Drape and the witch Jeanette Droste.
The second annual Christmas party hosted by the American Legion and Auxiliary at the Legion hall on Monday December 17 drew over 100 attendees, including 50 plus children. A broadcasting station aired songs and recitations, with a Christmas tree Santa Claus and entertainment. Attendees received homemade candy and popcorn balls, sacks of candy for children, and large donations of food and clothing for Christmas boxes for needy families.
Christmas program to be held at Fremont school district No 1 on Friday evening December 21 starting at 8 o'clock. Lunch will be served. Admission ten cents. Rosemary Brewer teacher.
Mr and Mrs Alwin Maurer and children Stephen and Hazel Levine traveled to New Hampton Saturday evening for Handel s Messiah performance at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon. Miss Betty Ann Maurer stayed with the August Eichmann home as a guest of Miss Janola Ann.
Santa Claus will appear in Tripoli Saturday afternoon December 22 at 2:00 PM. This visit precedes his Christmas Eve rounds and includes a generous distribution of good things for every child. About fifty prizes will be awarded to lucky drawing contest participants, with many nice gifts offered for those present.
Waverly promoter Richard Burke will stage a Saturday night boxing program at the Tripoli opera house on December 22 featuring four four round two minute bouts. Main event pairs Albert Oberlieu Bremer vs Hun Welcher Waverly, semi windup Eddie Albrecht Readlyn vs Lester Boeckmann Tripoli, special Speedy Bergman Tripoli vs Harry Conway Waterloo, and Snib Miller Shell Rock vs K O Short Dubuque. Burke promises solid matchups and crowd value.
The Leader will be issued Thursday next week and the following issue will also move due to Christmas and New Year. Correspondents should have letters ready by Wednesday evening.
The American Legion Auxiliary accepts usable clothing or toys for Christmas boxes. People may donate at Mrs. Nels Debel’s home before Saturday. Nonperishable food will also be accepted.
The January 1985 term jurors for Bremer County district court in Waverly are summoned to appear January 15 at 10:00 a.m. in Wa verly. Names include Paul Sommerfeldt Sumner Will Gade Sumner and others. Grand jurors for 1935 are summoned January 8 at 10:00 a.m. with Henry Bohle sr Sumner Leigh Alcock Tripoli J J Fink Tripoli Henry Lobeck Readlyn and more.
Observes birthday on Saturday December 15 marking the 71st anniversary with children and grandchildren gathering at the home for a 5 30 dinner. Guests from Minneapolis Readlyn Waverly and the local city included Har ry Fink Betty Jayne Audrey Fred Buhr Dan Buhr Otto Schick Dolores Mae Fredric H C Frese Arlene Fink J J Fink E C Fink Louise Fink and others with visiting and cards provided entertainment.
The Ladies Aid of the Congregational church will meet in the church basement Thursday at 2 PM on December 20. Christmas quotations will be read at roll call, with Mrs A A Belknap and Mrs C Otterstetter hosting. The J F F bridge club gathered Friday at the home of Mr and Mrs A W Buchele. high score went to Mrs G H Doty and consolation to Mrs FE Claus. a Christmas gift exchange was held.
Emil C. Stumme, a Readlyn banker and member of a prominent Bremer county family, died early Sunday at Colonial hospital in Rochester Minnesota from arteriosclerosis. He was born October 27, 1888 in Maxfield township. Survived by wife Anna Paul and six sons Harold Waterloo Burton Milton Paul Vernon Emilites at home, mother Minnie Stumme Readlyn, grandmother Engel Matthias, five brothers and three sisters. Funeral Thursday at his home 1:30 p m and St Pauls Lutheran church at 2 p m. Interment in St Pauls parish cemetery.
Miss Elverda Carstensen of 2740 Laurel Place became the bride of Lenard Carnahan of South Gate at the Methodist Episcopal church in Los Angeles on Thanksgiving morning. The ceremony included music by local artists, with fifty guests present. After a brief honeymoon the couple settled at 3618 Maywood Avenue Maywood.
Mrs Chris Winning cared for Mrs Schwemm who is bedbound at the Schwemm home northwest of town. McCumber Jacobson and Ambrose traveled to Waterloo on Friday for business. Henry Kuhrt and family from Waverly visited Herman Kuhrt and attended the school dedication program. Mrs David Richmond celebrated her birthday with eight friends visiting and gifting a boudoir lamp, followed by lunch. Richmond works at A H Panzer produce and lives with her mother and husband.
Recovering from a car accident Cedar Falls man Percy Ward sustains a broken vertebra after a skid and crash. He will wear a cast for weeks but prognosis is hopeful. First National bank rooms near county offices are being renovated for Wm. Gannon to assume County Attorneyship January 1. Nashua youth Gerald Martin, shot through the lung while cleaning his gun, has improved at home and is out of danger after a critical spell.
Miss Bernice D Bolton of this city and S W Luck of New Hartford Iowa were married at Walnut Street Baptist Church Waterloo Saturday evening December 15 Rev W L Steeves officiated The couple will reside in New Hartford Iowa
