Santa arrives from the North Pole for a free 2 pm show in Tripoli with a gift for every attending child. The program features a Western film "Black Dakotas," a Three Stooges comedy and a cartoon for all ages.
Santa Claus has named The Leader as the official depository for letters from local children. The Leader will print the letters in the Christmas edition and forward them to Santa. A box will be in Tripoli theatre lobby Saturday afternoon for children at the free show to drop letters. others may mail them to The Leader.
The Tri city Commercial club sponsors a Saturday free show with Santa in Tripoli. Shoppers can buy tickets for a December 23 turkey drawing: 30 hens 9 to 12 pounds each awarded to holders of lucky tickets with a maximum one turkey per person. Tickets with each dollar spent or on account, available at 39 firms, drawing at 3 pm Friday.
In a three day season ending Monday, 13 deer were checked at the weighing station near Highways 3 and 63. Tripoli men claimed five, including Erich Poock, Lawrence Snelling, R. F. Klemp, Herb Biesterfelt, and Forrest Bolte, all with several does. the heaviest at 211 pounds was a buck shot by William Brooks of Waverly in Butler county.
Marlys Steinbronn daughter of Mr and Mrs Gottlob Steinbronn married Russell Bennett son of Frank Bennett in a ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran church Klinger The couple will reside at 3339 W 63rd Pl Chicago The bride works as a nurse at Westside Veterans Hospital and the groom is an assistant purchasing agent for U S Steel Co in Chicago
James Haskovec son of Mr and Mrs LaVern Haskovec returns home Saturday from Sumner Community hospital where he underwent an appendectomy last week. His condition is improved.
Snow rain and ice hit Tripoli with up to six inches forecast for the weekend then dwindled to small amounts. A mix of rain and sleet caused slick roads as temperatures hovered around freezing and subzero lows appeared earlier in the week. Local observer E C Biermann logged daily highs and lows while H W Niedert won a $5 trade certificate in a hardware store drawing, with more gifts planned the following Saturdays.
Sunday afternoon visitors of Mr. and Mrs. John Henning were Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Bockhaus.
Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Hinrichs 67 were held at Trinity Lutheran Church Waterloo with Rev. G E Melchert officiating. Burial followed at Midwest Garden of Memories. She died Sunday of a heart attack at St Francis hospital Readlyn born December 9 1887. She moved to Waterloo twenty years ago and was married March 4 1909. Survived by husband two sons Elmer Evansdale Floyd Waterloo two daughters Mrs James McNamae and Mrs E Melendy Waterloo eight grandchildren and six brothers William Herman Carl Henry Ernest Louis. Her son and a brother preceded her in death.
Grace Lutheran church will host a service of carols and candle lighting Sunday at 8 pm. Prof. Karl T. Schmidt of Wartburg College will present the Christmas meditation From Darkness to Light with Rev. William F. Goetz as liturgist. Public invited to attend the annual service with special music.
Annual Christmas program by Tripoli Grade School planned for tonight at 7:30 in the high school gym. Students from kindergarten to eighth grade will perform three episodes in the pageant A Christmas Carol Pageant under Janice Garrison. Parents and friends invited to attend.
American Legion auxiliary will hold its annual Christmas party at the Town hall next Tuesday starting at 7 30 p m. Adults bring a 50c gift and a 25c gift for the child guest. Vada Platte Hazel Chapin and Helen Goodenbourg lead entertainment by juniors and children.
Bremer County youths Duane Kellum Duane Heinemann and Melvin Ohlendorf left Waverly Sumner for induction at Des Moines. They will be classified at the Des Moines reception center and assigned to Camp Chaffee Arkansas. The Leader marks 62 years with a new masthead and modern layout boosting reading matter by 26 percent.
Tripoli's boys and girls faced a tough Bremer county slate with wins over Janesville for the boys and a loss for the girls to Janesville. The boys beat Janesville 64-30 here as Carlyle Nicklaus and Denny Olejniczak led with 12 each. The girls lost 44-37 after a dreadful third quarter, Trudy Nerge scoring 16 for Tripoli. The schedule includes a Friday home game vs Denver and a Tuesday trip to Readlyn.
In Mayor Rudolph Piegers court from Nov 7 to Dec 5, Clarion Winzenburg paid 12 dollars and costs for careless driving and improper parking. Elmer Buchholz paid 2 dollars and costs for parking overtime. Eugene Pattison paid 10 dollars and costs for careless driving. Charges were filed by town and assistant marshals. Norma Axon returned from University of Iowa Hospitals and Allen Memorial Hospital, improving.
Final report by campaign chairman William A. Kuker shows Tripoli Community Chest topping its 1955 goal by 80.25 dollars. Total collected 2,675.25 against 2,595 quota, with divisions led by E ast Ray H. Fink 412.25 west Mrs H G Miller 368 south L H Bunger 352 north C C Eichmann 209.25 school teachers Mrs L Goodenbour 45.50 out-of-town workers Ed Buchholz 99.50 organizations Paul Voetmann 159 and commercial E H Stehn 1,029.75.
Irvin C. Schima schedules a public auction dispersing farm equipment and livestock on his 680 acre farm near Tripoli. The sale starts at 12 30 p m with the real estate offered from 2 30 p m. Auctioneers Johnston and Freiburg. clerk American Savings Bank.
Eighty four students from Tripoli Public Schools earned the second six weeks honor roll for the first semester. The list includes forty five high school and thirty nine grade school students who achieved at least a B average. Names span seniors to sixth grade with numerous pupils from each class level.
Tripoli Post Office will remain open the next two Saturdays to aid Christmas mailing. Window service will run 8 a m to 5 p m on December 10 and December 17, with regular hours 8 a m to 1 p m resuming December 24, according to Postmaster Ray Fink.
Dr. L J Magnall reports strong petition response for creating a new district. Of 1 320 eligible voters 1 031 signed representing 78 overall with 75 rural and 80 urban Tripoli area signers. Petitions go to county superintendent R C Gaard for hearing and future boundary action by the County Board of Education.
The Tri Poli High vocal music department will present its annual Christmas concert on Wednesday evening December 14 in the high school gymnasium. The program features the mixed chorus boys glee club and girls glee club with regular admission prices and general public invited.
Gene Kadera of Sumner was chosen as president of the Bremer County Young People's group at a Town Hall meeting held Saturday night. New officers include Leroy Scharnhorst and Margie Dettmer, both of Waverly, with Dorothy Korte as treasurer and Ronald Linner as reporter. Directors are Marlys Heine, Alvin OConnell, Laverne Hooper, and John Monaghan. Wartburg College President C H Becker spoke on Courtship and Marriage.
The VFW Auxiliary will hold a bake sale on Saturday December 10 at Bock's Plumbing and Heating in Tripoli with sales starting at 3 p.m. Also, Mr and Mrs Louis Platte visited Sunday afternoon with Mr and Mrs Clarence Tonne.
