Arthur Brisbane notes a mixed mood in New York on rising stock hopes and stubborn dividends. Farmers in Iowa Nebraska and Wisconsin stage blockades to push for higher milk prices, signaling a bold rural response that unsettles urban supply lines while officials debate global affairs from Manchuria to League of Nations roles.
A Sumner meeting of the Bremer County Taxpayers League drew over 100 farmers and town residents. Resolutions from a May meeting urging tax cuts were read and approved after discussion. Subcommittee chair Fred Rewoldt Jr. presented a request for a 25 percent cut in the 1933 budget, with an amendment praising a $49,000 budget reduction.
Frederika Special reports the Alcock quarry installed a fourteen by thirty six stone crusher weighing eleven tons five hundred pounds to double crushed rock production for highway 93. The unit is about twice the size of the old crusher and will yield about 17 cubic yards per hour powered by a 55 hp motor. Resurfacing of highway 93 from the primary to Sumner began August 3 with progress toward 5 miles west of Sumner. Crews place 400 to 500 cubic yards per mile, roughly double prior rates, with 4 000 of 6 700 cubic yards already on highways 59 and 93. Readyn-to-take contract work from number 10 to Readlyn using hard blue gray lime rock from the quarry has begun. Largest daily total on 93 reached 181 cubic yards.
Solomon Arney of near Waverly escaped Bremer county jail Tuesday by sawing through a steel bar securing a service door. He faced a chicken theft charge and was later found at his home after a car owned by him was abandoned near a Readlyn area farm. Police pursued the case after owners surprised a man stealing poultry and found sacks in the vehicle.
Tripoli public schools opened with the largest enrollment in years. High school enrollment stands at 78 with expectations to reach about 85 in upper grades. Junior high grades five seven and eight show 79 pupils. Tuition students increase over last year. Grade by grade lists include teacher assignments and student names, reflecting crowded conditions in multiple rooms.
Eighty new cases are filed for the September term of district court to convene in Wa verly on Tuesday, September 6, with Judge J. J. Clark presiding. The fall bar docket, printed this week, is among the largest in years, expanding from about 124 pages to 160 pages without the cover. Criminal and new cases are listed in the docket.
A series of legal actions across Sumner and Iowa courts includes disturbances of the peace, bond to keep the peace, false drawing and uttering of a check, resisting an officer, assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm, juvenile complaint, and several equity and law actions. James Archie Schrader infant son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Schrader of 321 First street Waterloo died at birth on August 25 at Allen Memorial hospital. Short funeral services were held at O Keefe and Towne chapel by Rev. William Hardcastle of Plymouth Congregational Church Waterloo at 2 30 p m. Burial followed in Fremont cemetery south of town with a few friends and relatives present. A song Beautiful Isle of Somewhere was sung during interment.
Rev Theo Thomas and his wife and daughter were honored with a reception Tuesday at St Peter’s Evangelical church. The program opened with prayer and an address by Rev Ph Hilligardt followed by a talk from Rev Peiffer of Siegel, with Thomas replying. The male choir performed and refreshments were served in the basement. The Thomases arrived from London on August 16 to fill the vacancy left by Rev Koehler’s resignation.
The St. John's Lutheran congregation at Crane Creek led by Pastor J. F. Dilges will hold its annual mission festival on Sunday September 4 with services at 10 am and 2 pm Rev. E J Voss of Grove Hill and Prof A E Guetzlaff of Waverly will address the audience.
Rev and Mrs E F Byers and family came home Sunday from Beaver Falls Pennsylvania where they visited her parents and other relatives. Their son Glenn who had been there for several months returned with them.
Exhibits used in the grand jury investigation of former Tripoli bankers E. H. Martin John H. Mueller and A. G. Kampmeier were taken to Osage Monday by Deputy Clerk Harry Thoms. The conspiracy trial will be held in Osage on venue change during the October term. County Treasurer Chas Bills accompanied Thoms. Trial date to be set when court opens. Judge M. F. Edwards will preside. Attorney H. L. Leslie aided with the investigation.
Carl Behrends sustained a broken right arm near the wrist while cranking a tractor at his home southwest of Tripoli on Monday. The bones were badly smashed by the force of the crank handle.
Miss Bernice Olson and Rex Van Dorn were married last Wednesday at the Presbyterian church in Galena Illinois. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Olson of Moline and has worked in this city. The groom son of Mr and Mrs Ed VanDorn grew up here and has worked at the Reith and VanDorn restaurant. The couple will reside with Mrs Fred Rathe.
Over the last week Mercy hospital implemented staff changes. Sister Mary Felicitas, supervisor for five years, is transferred to Mercy hospital in Cresco to assume a similar role. Sister Mary Avitus from Ann Arbor takes her place as superior. Sister Mary John, also from Ann Arbor, joins the nursing staff.
Rev. and Mrs. E. H. Rausch and daughter Hedwig were in a serious auto accident near Dubuque last week. They met another car on the wrong side of the road, and to avoid a collision Rev. Rausch drove into the ditch. All occupants survived with only minor bruises and cuts. their car was wrecked.
William Renner of Waterloo Laundry Co. was held up between here and Waterloo last week and robbed of $68.00. Two men halted his return trip as he collected money locally, and Sheriff Wagner was notified though no trace has yet been found of the suspects.
Seventy seven year old Mrs Mary Window a pioneer resident of the city marked her ninety seventh birthday at home on Saturday August 27. Resident since 1881 she enjoys good health and keeps active in local affairs. She lives with her son H C Window.
The Waverly public schools plan to open Monday September 5 with teachers arriving this week. Tuition will be reduced to 9.00 for high school and 5.00 for grades to broaden access to education. Mrs Ralph Dean travels to Alta Iowa after her brother Rial Taylors stroke but he passes away before she reaches him. Taylor was at Buena Vista county fair with race horses. Dr L D Jay office remodel over Linon Hardware now has five rooms plus a drug and store room and two toilets. Andy Trumpower opens a updated feed mill to replace last winters fire damaged plant with new equipment and modern conveniences. Mr and Mrs A G Wenninger and Sister Wilhelmina Bremer travel to Milwaukee for Rev H Fritchels Lutheran hospital anniversary with two local nurses employed there Sister Matilda Hertlein and Sister Etta Fritchel.
