In New York City during the eclipse office workers on roofs viewed through smoked glass while the sun dimmed briefly. Advertisers, printers, editors and others felt the moment despite clouds and haze as a baby yak named Eclipse is born. Hoarded optimism spread from Hoover era steel hopes to southern crops and a wary public.
Funeral services were held for Inez Rettig 15 at Tripoli Congregational Church after a Saturday night wreck two miles northwest of Tripoli. The coupe, carrying Robert Krueger 13 Dahlia Krueger 17 and Clarence Warneke 17, overturned killing Rettig and injuring others. Rettig daughter of Gottlieb and Gussie Rettig, attended Tripoli High School. survived by mother, two sisters and a half sister. Interment in Fremont cemetery.
Waverly reports more than 250 applications for paving highway 59 were filed with county auditor H. J. Stumme. Applicants line up daily, many lacking regular work for over a year and willing to do any labor. Two shifts may be used with ten hour days at 40 cents per hour. Labor will be drawn from a board selected list. draw dates not yet set. Also notes social visits and family gatherings around local residents and a Sunday dinner hosted by Mrs. Matilda Bierman for Mrs. Elizabeth Haeussler and relatives.
Plainfield edged Tripoli 9-8 with a final score by innings showing Tripoli 202 001 012 and Plainfield 005 400 00. Lund and Shadbolt produced two-base hits while Vanderlinden struck out four. Umpires were Carl Smith and Ralph Chester.
Funeral services for Mrs Helene Wescott 69 were conducted Monday at 2 30 p m in the Sumner Methodist Church with Rev G W Turner officiating Burial followed in Union Mound cemetery She was born in Delaware county Iowa on March 9 1863 and married to Frank Wescott October 21 1884 He died August 8 1929 Surviving children include sons Ray Sumner and Leland Chicago and a daughter Lucille who died August 17 1909 She was a member of Laurel chapter O E S FH PEO and a charter member of the Sumner Culture club.

Mr and Mrs F W Klein and daughter Kathryn spent Sunday in Des Moines with their other daughter Miss Ione who has been there a week. Ione has been employed by an insurance company since Thursday.
Two Minneapolis firms were low bidders for paving about 15 miles of highway 59 in Bremer and Chickasaw counties. Al Johnson Construction bid 157 726.85 for 10.851 miles in Bremer, and McKenzie Eileen Construction bid 80 894.56 for 4.548 miles in Chickasaw. Combined bid total 238 621.41. Crews of about 300 workers expected, with five hour days six days a week and wages of 60 and 40 cents per hour.
With five to six days left, the canning plant expects to finish its pack around Wednesday next week. This year’s corn pack totals about 25,000 cases, surpassing early estimates, and the quality is reported as very high grade.
Mr and Mrs Mike Goodenbour of Waterloo celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with a surprise gathering held Sunday September 4 at their home. Relatives then planned an anniversary dinner and outdoor activities at Lafayette Park. Participating families include the Goodenbours and numerous relatives from Tripoli Fredericksburg Bremer Martell Waterloo and surrounding areas.
William Milius 84 was struck and killed Tuesday as he stepped from his home to a mailbox. Driver Lee Zimmerman stated he could not avoid the collision, carrying the body about 100 feet before stopping. Milius, who would have turned 84 on September 27, lived with a daughter five miles east. He leaves four daughters and three sons. body taken to Matthias funeral home Readlyn. Coroner weighing whether to hold an inquest.
Readlyn club annexed the Cedar Valley league pennant as Nashua, its sole challenger, was defeated by Dunkerton 2 to 1. Nashua needed a win to force a playoff, but Dunkerton prevailed. Readlyn and Jesup, both league winners, may meet at Waterloo to decide the mythical two circuit championship pending arrangements.
Farmers aided by the Khaki Shirts blocked roads to Des Moines to deter milk deliveries during the Des Moines fair period. Pickets armed with clubs watched a viaduct while association milk haulers and farmers attempted to move eight loads of milk toward town. Police eventually intervened as roads were opened for Des Moines distribution.
Frank Strawson of Nashua returned home Sunday after visiting his grandparents Mr and Mrs L J Smith last week. Mr and Mrs W H Notdorf attended the mission festival at Denver Sunday in the Evangelical church pastored by Rev Krueger. Mr and Mrs Harold Lenius and family of Independence spent the weekend with the Hale family. Mr and Mrs W H Krull left Saturday for Washington DC to spend winter with their son in law and daughter in law Wendell Krull Mr and Mrs J A Koch Mr and Mrs Harry Buhr and son Richard and Delores visited at the home of Mr and Mrs John Henning Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. William Guether aged 76 was badly injured in an automobile accident near Oelwein while returning from Mendota Illinois. The crash caused a cracked pelvis and several broken ribs with other injuries but no internal damage was found. She is cared for at home after hospital treatment and ambulance transport.
State officers aided by local police raided Irene's cafe on west Bremer avenue Frank Rhode residence Roy Waite home and W O Mayer place uncovering 57 bottles of home brew 7 cases of beer 24 bottle 48 bottle 36 bottle 11 bottle and 35 pints seized. Disposition to be decided at the term of court convened this week.
Oscar Elliott aged 4 and Edgar aged 11 narrowly escaped drowning on the Cedar river when they fell from the C. G. W. Ry bridge. Oscar slipped from a stone step while Edgar attempted a rescue and also fell in as the river about 25 feet deep. Their brother aged seven shouted for help, alerting W. Nelson manager of the Crystal Ice and Fuel company who swam out and rescued both boys after the younger one went under a third time.
The city tournament finished Sunday evening with a picnic supper. In the ladies division, Mrs. Marion Droste won flight one and Mrs. Fred Eckstein won flight two. In the men's division, winners were G. H. Niewehner flight one, Lawrence Stauffer flight two, A. C. Grossmann flight three, and Bob Gallagher flight four. Trophies could not be presented as scheduled due to missing trophies, delaying the ceremony to a future date.
At a Friday evening VFW meeting Ed Platte was chosen commander and George J. Schauer senior vice commander. H J Schoof was elected junior vice commander O J Warneke Readlyn and A F Melcher Bremer were named chaplains L F Consigny post quartermaster Arden L Young post advocate Dr J E Whitmire post surgeon Doren Lovejoy trustee for three years and Fred Mohr officer of the day Plans were approved to form a Ladies Auxiliary to the post.
Paul Grassfield of this city marries Miriam Adell Boysen of Waterloo in a formal ceremony. The couple begin their life together following the nuptials, with local guests in attendance.
