Amazing 20 Pig Litter Showcases Crossbred Bacon Hog
Mrs. Margaret Hatten of Marshall county Iowa plans a summer circuit of major fairs to prove her cross of Hereford boar and Tamworth sow yields a 20 pig litter. The litter weighed 72.3 pounds at farrowing on March 29 1952 and 990 pounds at weaning two months later. The sire is a champion Hereford boar Rex and the dam a Tamworth sow. Mrs. Hatten stresses quality stock and Sargent feed as keys to the large litter and predicts the cross will become the new bacon type hog. She has shown stock 11 years and expects to display two champion boars, a first-place sow, and several gifts and boars this year.

Farmers urged to store grain as prices rise
Released through County Extension Director, the article says this year may favor storing grain rather than selling at harvest. Extension economist Francis Kutish notes price structure vulnerabilities at high levels and expects a domestic demand pickup in the second half of the year. The oat crop is below expectations across the corn belt and recent prices near loan levels. Dr. M J Thiele of Marshalltown serviced Mrs Hatten's 20 pig litter and Mrs Hatten buys feeds from Ajay Feed Co in Marshalltown.

Fight disease and pests with proper feeding and vaccination
A farm advisory urges livestock keepers to maintain clean housing and sanitation, use antibiotics and new chemicals in feed, isolate new replacements, vaccinate for cholera and Newcastle, test for brucellosis and tuberculosis, involve veterinarians as needed, and avoid contact with sick animals. Bow-Key Pig & Sow Balancer is cited as a feed with higher vitamin, antibiotic, and trace element content.

Old Rule On Corn Prices And Loan Risks In Iowa
Kutish explains a long standing rule of thumb that farmers gain by holding corn after a bumper crop and selling after a short crop. Prospects for a bumper 1952 corn harvest could push prices below loan rates at harvest, making non recourse loans a near risk free hedge. If prices stay low, delivery may satisfy the loan. Storage lines fill as Iowa cribs show lower stocks after a short previous crop.
