County plans call for five year program to treat the six mile Knittel road with chloride then asphalt later. Work would start with frost boil repairs and a three inch chloride layer costing about $4,000 per mile. Total five year cost estimated at $10,000 per mile.
Tripoli launches its second annual Community Chest fund drive from October 10 through November 2 with Wm. A. Kuker as campaign chairman replacing Paul Voetmann. Directors reviewed the budget and admissions report and plan a KWWL radio kickoff with a taped campaign leaders interview and local music acts.
The 25th Mohling reunion will be Sunday at Town Park and in case of rain at Town Hall. John Steege, recently returned from the army, will share memories of trips to the Mohling homestead in Germany. Mrs. Stumme serves as reunion secretary.
The Ladies Aid of St. John's Lutheran church Maxfield sponsors a lawn supper on the church grounds Sunday evening August 14 serving from 5:00 p.m. A program follows at 8:00 p.m.
An ice cream social sponsored by the St Pauls Luther League will be held Thursday evening August 18 in the church basement. Serving begins at 5 30 PM with dishes including pie cake ice cream and coffee.
Funeral services for Frank E Burkhardt 81 of Janesville who died of cancer last Wednesday in Allen Memorial hospital Waterloo were held Saturday from Matthias Funeral home Denver with the Rev H A Roschke officiating Burial was in Mount Vernon cemetery Mount Vernon township Casket bearers were Glen Becker Charles Koepke Floyd Bye Fred Neumann Paul Theis and Henry Doepke Mr Burkhardt born Oct 28 1873 is survived by a daughter Mrs Herman Waterfort Jesup and a son Harry Route 1 Cedar Falls
Bremer county schools benefited from 7977.40 in federal funds to finance noon lunches for 1954 55. Seven Bremer schools participated, serving 211894 Type A lunches with 2298 free meals. County Superintendent R C Gaard announced the program and noted additional commodities supplied at no cost due to transportation.
Dale Reese, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Reese of Waterloo, fell from a car driven by his father Monday at 1 p m just west of Fred's Body Shop. He suffered severe head bruises and abrasions and a possible brain concussion. He was taken to St Francis hospital, Waterloo, where he remains a patient.
H. H. Buhr, long hospitalized in Rochester for several weeks, has returned home Friday with improved condition and is described as doing better.
The Wapsie Sportsmen's Club sponsored the eighth annual fish fry drawing over 1,400 attendees. About 775 pounds of walleye, 250 pounds of coleslaw, 125 dozen buns, 40 loaves, 45 pounds of butter, and 150 gallons of coffee fed the crowd from 5 to 8 pm. Prizes exceeding $500 were donated by merchants and manufacturers, with F. F. Carstensen winning a 3.5 horsepower outboard motor.
Funeral services for Carl Koch age 84 who died Thursday in Elmhurst Illinois were held at St Peter s Evangelical and Reformed Church with Rev E F Puhlmann officiating Interment followed in the church cemetery Koch a long time Tripoli area resident lived on a farm then worked as a carpenter He helped move St Peter s first church to its present site He is survived by two sons Rev Walter A Koch and Dr Edwin Koch and grandchildren and great grandchild He was preceded in death by his wife three daughters and four sisters
Franklin Koch, son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Koch, arrived home after two years service in the U S Army with thirteen months in England. He received his discharge July 29 at Fort Sheridan Illinois and plans to pursue college studies this fall.
Stanley Dancer suffered a fingertip loss in a hay fork rope pulley accident Monday. The incident occurred while he was working near the farm equipment, with medical staff providing immediate care.
Mrs. William Lussenhop, 70, died early Saturday at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo after a stroke. Funeral services were held Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Fairbank with Father B G Collins officiating. Burial followed at Grove Hill Cemetery Readlyn with casket bearers Emil Leistkow Henry Leistkow James Curley Melvin Lehmkuhl Richard Shields and Charles Miller. She was born March 20 1885 and survived by her husband.
Herb Blume of Tripoli and J W Dawson of Waterloo devised a new adjustable crutch system with hand operated levers to extend or shorten while backing up stairs. A polio survivor since 1940 he now runs a bookkeeping and tax service from two miles south of Tripoli with his wife Elvera and three children.
Five certificates for publication of insurance companies authorized to conduct business in Iowa are listed by Charles R. Fischer commissioner of insurance. The reports include Michigan Mutual Liability, Michigan Fire & Marine, Detroit Michigan. Michigan Surety, Michigan Millers Mutual Fire, Lansing Michigan. Mercury Insurance, St Paul Minnesota.
Kuhrt Clothiers announces a Sept. 10 drawing offering a full-size boys bicycle along with basketball shoes jeans and T shirts as part of the Key Days promotion. Winners need not be present to claim prizes and contest details appear in the store ad.
Brookfield Illinois Mr and Mrs G B Chapin announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Bette Lou to Jack Roy don Hollier. The wedding is set for Saturday August 27 at 3 00 in the First Congregational church Brookfield Illinois.
Tripoli escaped a long heat spell as a heavy rainstorm Saturday cooled the area. Temperatures dipped to 81 on Sunday and 79 on Monday with 82 Tuesday. Rainfall totaled .61 of an inch plus additional showers, helping crops while livestock suffered in the heat.
Local participants shone at Eldora under the lights on Sunday night. Ragtime owned by Walter Sommer of Tripoli won the four furlongs with jockey Dale Schmidt also riding Ragtime to victory and securing two additional wins on the card. Races are scheduled for Independence tomorrow and Tipton on Friday.

Readlyn Independent School district plans a 68000 dollar budget for 1955 56 pending approval. A public hearing at Readlyn High School on August 24 at 8 p m will let taxpayers voice support or opposition. Previous budgets were 75455 99 in 1954 55 and 71613 39 in 1953 54.

Gloria Poock 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs Arnold Poock was taken by ambulance to Iowa City Friday for bulbar polio treatment. Her condition was reported serious until Monday when improvement was noted her mother stayed with her to assist care.
Tripoli's independent team under lights at Janesville tonight as warmup for the state ABC tournament starting the week of Aug 21. Readlyn edged Tripoli 6-5 in a ninth inning rally. Lehmkuhl and Falk sparked Readlyn. Sassman and Poock led Tripoli.
Daryl Pals of the Leroy Gophers 4-H club won first prize senior heifer calf and junior champion female at the Black and White show in Nashua last week. The event featured 38 Holsteins shown by Bremer county 4-H members and Holstein breeders with multiple county exhibitors.
Theo Peters is recuperating at his home following a recent discharge from a Toowa City hospital. The report notes his health is improving as he rests at home.
