Tripoli Tigers crushed Denver 16 to 5 in a Cedar Valley league baseball game at Denver. Krueger struck out nine, Moehling and Griese fanned one each. Wilharm and Beisner hit three-base hits while Sommers Belknap and Kehe doubled. Box score shows 21 hits for Tripoli and seven for Denver. Score by innings 6 0 0 3 0 4 2 0 0. Umpire Jack Deinema.
Nashua blanked Readlyn 2 0 as Cedar Valley league leader Readlyn suffered its second loss of the season. Wilson edged Diekmann in a tight pitcher duel. Nashua scored in the first on a walk and two singles and added another in the sixth on Chandler’s double after a single and sacrifice. Nashua has three postponed games with Waverly Dunkerton and Denver and will travel to Waverly next Sunday.
Fredericksburg beat Dunkerton 11 to 4 in a Cedar Valley league game. Fredericksburg still has two postponed games with Tripoli and Nashua after the regular season ended. Sunday batteries were Schnorr and Rourke for Fredericksburg and Carnes and Page for Dunkerton. Dunkerton had 11 hits and 2 errors. Fredericksburg had 9 hits and 4 errors.
Readlyn and Tripoli played to a six to six kittenball tie on the local lot Tuesday evening. The game was stopped in the eighth inning due to darkness with Tripoli batting, two outs, runner on third. Tripoli batteries were Cook Stegeman and Selek. Readlyn’s Frese and Hahn fielded.
Cecil Meier son of Mr and Mrs C L Meier returned home on an 88 day naval furlough to spend a month with his parents He rode hitchhikes from Seattle to Waverly last week and was met by his father and John Heideman of Denver who was visiting the Meier home in Waverly
A birthday gathering was held at Mr. and Mrs. Chris Winning’s home to mark his 71st birthday, Friday. Relatives, including Ernest Winning and daughter, George Slotter and sons, Will Hoeger and daughter, and Ewald Pipho with children, attended a luncheon after visiting and gift giving.
Mr and Mrs Ed Niemeyer were surprised Sunday to celebrate their twenty fifth anniversary. Children planned the event at home with a dinner at 6 pm served by daughters Helen and Ivadel and Mrs Walter Garland. Guests included relatives from Sumner Readlyn Crane Creek and other localities.
Mrs Mary Mooney received word that her brother John Lynch died in Phillipsburg Kansas Sunday noon at age 81. He lived in the county years ago before moving to Kansas where he resided with his wife deceased about two years. Survived by three daughters two sons one son killed in an auto accident three years ago two sisters and one brother. Ed and Hugh Mooney left for Kansas to attend the funeral. Funeral held Wednesday morning.
Relatives of Mr and Mrs D C Pockels of Detroit met with them at Frederika park Sunday for a picnic dinner and supper. Attendees included Theo Pockels Plainfield John Ambrose Saude Margaret Cedar Rapids Stanley Waterloo Fred Allen Chas Stowell Charlotte P H Lynch Richard Helen Dorothy Nora Gunsalus H F Schmidt and Carleth Ambrose among others. Mrs Pauline Bremer and her sons and daughter with families held their annual reunion in John Wendt grove south of town on Sunday July 31. Birthdays celebrated included Alvin Bremer Florine Segebarth and Olinda Bremer. Attendees included Frank Bremer Fred Bremer Will Segebarth August Bremer and Alwin Bergman among others from Frederika Williamstown and Douglas township.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a large barn and windmill on the Tucker farm tenanted by O. E. Salisbury Sunday afternoon. Loss includes three horses one calf harness three straw stacks 2000 bushels of oats the hay crop and small tools. Partial insurance carried.
The Third District Legion Band won first place at the state convention band concert in Fort Dodge on Tuesday night August 2 beating the Pom eroy post band. Members W. N. Warner Tripoli R. V. Leach H. J. Stumme H. E. Yardo and Frank Curtis Waverly played in the winning band which also appeared in Tuesday morning parade.
Fred Joens of Douglas township sustained a fracture in his left arm between the shoulder and elbow after falling about seven feet from a ladder at his farm Tuesday morning.
The Leader editor recounts a Northeastern Iowa Publishers association Play Day in Lansing Iowa along the Mississippi river. The 90 mile drive via West Union Postville and Waukon offers scenic valleys bluffs and river views. Highlights include Mount Hosmer Indian Mounds fish hatcheries Black Hawk bridge Winneshiek bottomlands lotus beds and a boat trip with fishing and dam scenes.
Mrs. W. C. Fergeman reported a valuable diamond ring lost two months ago after searches around her home and garden. On Monday she suspecting ashes, sifted through furnace ashes and recovered the ring. The ring’s gold was melted but the diamond remained undamaged in the setting.

Stegeman's Colts, noted for hard hitting kittenball play, remain atop the City Kittenball League after a Friday night win at Boeckmann's pasture. They outhit Selek's Pirates two to one and held the lead daily, finishing 12 to 7.
Pirates beat Otterstetter's Cubs 9 to 7 at Boeckmann's pasture on Monday. Errors by both teams helped the scoring. Pirates led from the first inning and the Cubs failed to rally. Box score notes include Beis, Miller, Seleck, Everding, Goodenbour, Frese, Parrott, Bennett with various hits and two homeruns.
Karl King, nationally known band master and composer, will direct the Waverly concert band in an all King program on Thursday evening August 11 at 8 15 p m at the court house park Waverly King is described as America's most versatile writer and his works are widely played by U S bands He has directed the Barnum Bailey circus Shrine Canton Ohio Buffalo Bill's Wild West and currently leads the Fort Dodge municipal band and runs a publishing house
