Waverly defeats Sumner 9 to 0 after Sumner forfeits to avoid a $25 fine for ineligible players. The ruling leaves Waverly tied atop the Cedar Valley standings with Readlyn as Glenn Lundberg protests the inclusion of Walter Frisch and Harold Kirchman, both Sumner players, who were not on Sumner’s eligibility list.
The third Sauerbrei family reunion took place at Devil's Backbone park in Strawberry Point on Sunday August 5. Attendees included numerous Sauerbrei relatives from Readlyn Waterloo Sumner Davenport Tripoli and other nearby towns. The oldest guest was 86 year old Mrs Adams Nuenkirk and the youngest nine month old Jimmy Wood. The next reunion is planned for Readlyn park on the first Sunday in August 1935.
All members of the Auxiliary and their families are invited to a picnic Thursday afternoon in the woods northeast of the C. B. Kelsey farm. Members should meet at the Legion hall between 1 30 and 2 00 o clock. transportation will be arranged for those without private conveyances.
Dr. E. C. Claus departed Monday morning for Iowa City to receive medical treatment at the University Hospital.
Members of the Henning family gathered at Sumner park for their first reunion on Sunday August 5. Walter Zander led songs and readings while a picnic dinner was shared from baskets. The oldest attendee was Henry Buenger 76 of Tripoli and the youngest was Corine Mae Braun of Sumner.
N. E. Loomis sold the local bakery to Kenneth Benton of Clarksville. Benton will take possession Monday, August 13, after managing a Clarksville bakery. Mr. and Mrs. N. G. White, who ran the shop for Loomis after he bought it from Lee Scott, leave with many friends and plan new ventures for Mr. White.
Nashua reports the Big Four Fair is one week away with livestock entries due by Saturday and other departments by next Wednesday. The event runs Thursday to Saturday featuring the Scandals of 1934 revue with changing costumes and acts, free acts, and Children’s Day on Saturday with free admission for under 14. A new state exhibit from the fish and game department will showcase stuffed birds and fish in Floral Hall for educational viewing.
Mr and Mrs H H Bunger return from a four weeks sight seeing tour. They left July 6 for Chicago where they were joined by her sister Mrs D A Krick and husband. They visited Niagara Falls Thomas Island Atlantic City and twelve states crossing major mountains. They spent two days in Washington DC and in Harrisburg Pa. They are accompanied home by her sister Mrs A L Johnston of Chicago who will visit about three weeks at the Bunger home and nearby relatives.
Mrs. Fred Bartling, 48, died at her home four miles north of the city from a heart condition. She is survived by her husband, sons, three sisters Mrs. Philip Neuman Cedar Falls Mrs. Bernard Dammer Waterloo and Mrs. Walter Wilkins this city, and four brothers Herman Matthias Otto Elmer near Denver and August in this city. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mt Vernon church near Denver with Rev Gabler and Rev Betz officiating.
Gottlieb Mueller 75 died Friday morning August 3 at his home from a heart attack. Born in Germany in 1859 he had been in his usual health. Survived by widow two sons William and Fred Mueller and two daughters Mrs Olinda Kleinschmidt and Ida Schrage all of this city. He moved from his farm to the city last fall.
Mrs. E. A. Schiefelbein sues the city of Waverly for 1340 dollars claiming personal injuries from slipping on ice in front of the First National Bank in January 1934. She alleges the city allowed ice to remain for over four hours before removal or sanding, listing damages including loss of time 30 weeks at 15 dollars weekly and expenses.
A heavy rain and intense wind damaged crops and buildings across the area Saturday night. Waverly reports a blown storefront window, damaged roof, downed billboards, and several trees fallen. North of Waverly silos and other structures were blown down. Plainfield also saw significant damage and many trees uprooted.
